Why should you get the ability to choose which method you use? Do you get to do that from other places that sell you things? "I really like this thing on Amazon, but they should let me buy it from Ebay. And if they won't, I won't buy it".
This has nothing to do with buying things my dude, this has everything to do with them deprioritizing and slowly crippling a reliable, secure and free method of personal device management that they’ve already offered for over 15 years.

Thank god. I don’t think I have it yet, both iTunes and the Apple Software updater are telling me that it’s still up to date. But I’ll be patient, maybe it’s just a slow rollout. How did you guys get the update?
Microsoft store if you installed it from there before.

OK. Cut the drama. If you don't like the way they do this, go use Android.
I like iOS. I wouldn’t want to use an Android. That doesn’t mean Apple is perfect and when they have a clearly anti-consumer attitude in many aspects of how they operate, I think it would be more productive to ask your favorite company to do better than to blindly fanboy and try to justify every single thing they do.
One day they’ll make a change you don’t like, and I hope the response you get isn’t “go use Android”

No. Unlike some, I don't expect perfection and I am mature enough to understand that there are limitations. And anyone who follows me knows I am not a "blind fanboy". I like the Apple ecosystem but recognize when they have not achieved. But I accept it and move on.

As far as support for windows users is concerned, it's not serious, and hasn't been for a while now.

Or, more logically and realistically, the amount of windows users that update tethered is not worth prioritising, as the vast majority do it OTA.

Windows iTunes will get an update, but obviously there’s not enough users for them to prioritise that over iOS, tvOS, audioOS and other Apple related updates before them. Can’t blame them for looking after customers using their own platform first, and rolling out to the handful of windows users that tethered update their devices.

You just have to wait for it, cos you’re a lower priority than over 95% of the user base. The amount of people that tether update is drastically small these days, compared to the user base of iPhones. People go for the route of less hassle.

With no offense to my right honorable friend, the Pear, the benefits of a file install vs an OTA are vastly oversold. Bits are bits regardless of how delivered.
I'm no expert and I have gotten dubious info from Apple support in the past, but two senior advisors told me essentially what you are getting at: the signed code for an OS or an update is 100% correct. If it weren't it would be flagged and not able to run.

However, one of them, a senior tech in store, also said sometimes what you see in the field doesn't match the theory...

If that's the hill you want to die on, be my guest.

End of the day it's a personal preference, no offence will ever be taken, I just share my honest findings and hope that helps some people.

I think the reinstalling process is what helps iron out any glitches. And always worth a go if somethings up 👍🏼

There's no question that there might be faults. But with the elaborate checksums and other error detection software in place, its not likely. Almost certainly that's what's going on during the extended "preparing update" phase of OTAs. Its backchecking to make sure what was downloaded and on the device matches what should be on the device.
