Oh OH...
Just read on Engadget that 4.2 might not be coming for a few weeks because of WIFI problems. What a bummer!! Been waiting patiently a long time now.
Gonna be interesting to read the backlash here... oh :apple:

Being somebody who bought an iPad on launch day, it was a little too late to return it by the time the iPhone 4 was announced and it was clear that every single iPad owner had just been shafted.

Aw geez. I had NO idea I'd been "shafted." Thanks for letting me know how I should feel. I thought I loved my iPad and was happy with the purchase, but apparently, according to you, I'm just bitter that technological advances marched on even after its release.

No worries here. I've been using the GM since it was pushed out. Not particularly anxious for the public version -- afraid it might kill the AirPrint via Mac hack.

Not necessarily. Apple often tweaks a GM to tighten up security or fix a h/w issue w/o rolling out another RC. Personally I haven't seen the WiFi issue, but enough have that it's probably worth Apple's time to look into the issue before releasing.

As for AirPrint, unless you have one of the HP ePrint inkjets, Airprint will be a no-go for direct printing w/o a Mac.

Inkjet. Blech. I have a feeling AirPrint, like everything else, will evolve to be much more flexible.

That's true, GMs get tweaked all the time w/o rerelease to external testers and devs. But sounds to me like the wifi issue would require more than a tweak. I mean it's bigger, deeper, troublesome and should probably initiate a rollback to RC.

That's sourced here: http://www.macstories.net/about/

It's garbage. It might be true, but it's still garbage. Engadget may as well source it to me and my Magic 8-ball.

Seriously, about the wifi issue, it's going to be analyzed for iPad impact scaled to all the iPads sold. If it's <= x% -- whatever Apple's standard is, like the dead-pixel standard -- then they'll roll it out and fix it later. If >= x% they'll hold off. I expect they're going to be pretty liberal with rolling it out. It's seen as a big update for iPhone, and a HUGE update for iPad, and will probably drive sales of both, AND the new Apple TV. If they want to pull in the stalling consumers for their holiday revenue, they have to get it out now.

looking at apples track record with recent software releases I will definitely wait for a few weeks befor I update to iOS4.

It's not that iOS4 offers anything essential.

Well, folks, not really all that important in the grand scheme of life, is it? Seriously, so what?

Take a look at the URL you're @ - macRUMORS, ergo it was rumoured to be released today, not guaranteed. Again, so what... my iPad is on 4.2 GM, WifFi bugs 'n' all, and do you see me crying? It's great, and I can wait. Great device, the iPad, SO useful and beautiful. iPad is a luxury device, NOT a necessity, and we can wait for the update, no matter how much we complain.

Meh, this isn't news, it's just fuel for whiners :D

How the heck did this WiFi issue (IF TRUE) not get detected earlier?

If a recent addition introduced this bug, why not leave it as it was earlier.
Oh well. Apple, you have 18 days left. Good luck!

Yep.. GM working good for me on iPad too.

I haven't notice this issue with wi-fi connecting and then dropping after a few minutes. I used my iPad last night for 45 minutes or so in my basement, while my router is upstairs in the family room -- and it worked flawlessly the whole time.

The ability to group icons into folders, alone, makes the upgrade worthwhile to me. Honestly, that was becoming my biggest issue with my iPad ... too many icons all over multiple screens and no good way to keep it organized.

I have the GM on my iPad and love it. I can wait until the official release to update the iPhone since the only real addition is the hope for improved battery.

Damn, I feel bad for iPad owners. You've been waiting for months for your device to have the same basic capabilities that the other iOS devices already have, and on the eve of the release, it gets pushed back.

Well if the reports are true that Apple is delaying the release due to WiFi issues that folks are reporting, I'm glad. I'd rather Apple take their time and get it right (as best as possible) instead of rushing to release a more flawed version.

Broken WiFi would really hamper my way of using iOS on my iPhone. I'm almost always on WiFi and I don't have 3G coverage at my house so I would be upset if I had those issues.

It's because of the wifi problems testers have been experiencing with the new 4.2 update.
A friend of mine who's an iOS developer was telling me about this just the other day; I believe his words were "serious networking issues". As a result I wasn't going to install 4.2 immediately anyways, but I'm glad to see that Apple's decided to hold it until these issues are resolved.

I've been using the GM on my iPad since it was released. Not a single problem with it. Wifi is working perfectly, no folder glitches, nothing.

Anyone ever consider that on public forums the problems with a product is greatly squewed in the negative way? People only come to forums to get help with a problem, hardly ever to just say "my product works as described".

I'll go back to using my perfectly fine iPad on 4.2gm on wifi and 3G without issues.

Is it just me, or does iOS 4 have a lot of overall problems? My iPhone 4 has good WIFI connection in the morning and then it sucks at night. There was that proximity sensor... bluetooth...

And now WIFI on the iPad. Kinda sad since we pay so much for these products.

I'm sure you could pick up an XP tablet nice and cheap, if you're concerned about iOS "problems" that you seem to be so concerned about. I mean, why use such a buggy OS, you do have choices.

I must admit, I've never had a problem with the proximity sensor on my iPad, when I press it against my face. Then again, I've never pressed it against my face. ;)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

This delay is very good news. I've been running the 4.2 GM on my iPad since it was released and re wi-fi issue is awful. I have no connectivity problems at home where im relatively close to the router and there is a limited set if devices vying for addresses. At work is another story. Full signal strength shown, but the connection stops working after a minute or so.

Kudos to Apple for not releasing this yet.

My point was that you can't say it's smart to buy a Mac because tens of millions do it, if you are going to use number of buyers as an argument, you can't really use it for a platform with a marketshare that small. By that logic a PC user should be roughly 9 times smarter than a Mac user

Agreed...

Fixed that for ya buddy. ;)

Airplay Issue

You know what's happening to me? I'm running iOS 4.2GM on my iPhone 4 and iPad. The airplay symbol has been on both since I downloaded the GM. Usually, it just gave the options to my use my AE and computer when I tapped on it. Once, just once, it even gave the option to use my ATV (it didn't work, obviously). But, for the last several days, the airplay symbol has disappreared. Completely. Maybe this is part of the problem. This happens on both my iPhone 4 and iPad. just my $.02. Btw, I don't have the wifi problem.

Say what you want, but I think Apple has truly stretched it's self out to thin. They've been having numerous hardware and software problems since March.

How do you download the Golden Master? Do you need to be a registered beta tester or can any DL it?

Thanks.

Personally I haven't had any issues with the GM only with some of my unpublished apps which is to be expected.
