I have 2 young daughters and I don't fly. So I bought an iPad to sling in between the 2 headrests of the car when we drive through Europe and my girls watch whichever of the 30 film I have loaded.

You mean to tell me you SAIL to Europe. I HATE to fly but I fly if I'm traveling overseas. But you, you're dedicated, I give you that.

This is annoying.

The iPad SHOULD have shipped with iOS 4.x. Since getting my iPhone 4, I've used my iPad less and less and less because of the lack of multi-tasking and non-working EQ.

And even though I have no use for them, the iPad should have debuted with dual cameras and "FaceTime". But Apple kept that for the iPhone 4 to drive its sales and for a second generation iPad, leaving those of us who bought the original iPad out in the cold without features that it should have had from the start.

What utter nonsense. Maybe it should also have shipped with a teleport? Just because technology is available that's no reason/logic for every new device to ship with every available function. If the device doesn't do what you need it for, then don't buy it. It really is that simple.

Hehe. He lives in Jersey, which is in Europe. It's one of the Channel Islands, closer to France than Great Britain. And I'm jealous... Jersey is quite beautiful.

Okay well Green Day didn't call that song "American Idiot" for nothing. ;-)

People in the States living in the state of New Jersey, especially those born and raised in New Jersey, often refer to the state simply as "Jersey." Kind of a tongue-in-cheek colloquialism. So I assumed, *cough* *cough*... You know because America is the only country in the world.

I know the Channel Islands but only collectively and have never set foot on one. In fact I'd be hard pressed to name any of them (besides Jersey, thanks to you).

Anyway, mea culpa. Thanks for giving me a good laugh early this morning.

and I could care less about games and GPUs.

Well, in your own words above.

If you "Could care less" then you obviously do care to some degree about games and GPU's.

If you Couldn't care less then would would not care at all about them.

Yeh, the argument still holds. The iPad is not $400 more expensive than the iPhone 4, as mosx claims. They're at least the same price, and usually the iPad is cheaper.

I just checked my AT&T account on one of our family's newish two-year contracts: 16GB 4, it's actually US$599. (We'd get some discount but that's because of our account history w/ AT&T and the high monthly cost of our chosen plan, so it's not relevant. US$599 is full price.) Still somewhat cheaper than in the UK, but it's US$100 more than the 16GB iPad, even in the States.

Oh be fair. That's like "casting aspersions." It's correct, the common form is not only incorrect but senseless, but if you say it properly, like two people will have a clue what you mean.

No problem. I chuckled as well. Actually, when I first saw Jersey next to the name before I read the post I wondered if it was referring to the state or the Channel Island, myself.

New Jersey is literally that: new Jersey. It was named after Jersey as the land was a gift from the king to a prominent family on the island for putting him up during part of English Civil war after his father had been executed. I have lived here on and off for most of my life (about 9 years away). It's great: but too small. Beautiful? Mainly in the spring and summer. Not so much at the moment.

They sell them contracts here, at least to people currently in AT&T contracts but with no subsidized upgrade consideration yet available. For the 16GB 4, I believe it's US$500. So quite a bit cheaper than in the UK. But, hey, you guys have Coldplay and stuff.

Is that supposed to make us feel better..... Coldplay!

Not the best argument you could lay on a brit.

;)

It's idiomatic.

As it happens, I could actually care less, because I need a good GPU for Aperture, but that's by the bye.

What a mature reply

The honeymoon period for my iPad wore off months ago. I'm not blinded by the "oooh shiny Apple gadget", and I realize now that it has major shortcomings and it SHOULD have shipped as I said.

Especially when you consider the fact that the iPad itself cost more than a reasonably powerful computer, and the 3G 64GB version costing as much as a self-built PC that would rival the Mac Pro in terms of overall power (and beat it significantly in GPU power). The iPad as it is now is an unfinished product. It needs 4.2. Desperately. It should have shipped with 4.x. Especially considering how much it cost.

Yawn.

Fact is, nothing like the iPad existed when it was introduced, and now multiple hardware manufacturers are rushing to try to catch up. Sure, they will have this feature or that feature that the iPad didn't have at launch. But they'll mostly be "me too" devices.

The release of 4.2 will be like a nitro boost to those 7 million+ people, including yourself who already bought one.

If MS released such a large upgrade to one of their OS, you would be paying for it. Apple is giving it to you.

Apple likely had good technical reasons for not introducing 4.2 at launch, and would have obviously had to delay it's launch had they wanted to include it on the hardware. They made the business decision to launch without it, and given sales figures so far I'd say they made a great decision. I have an iPad, and find it useful every day, in spite of the improvements that are yet to come to it.

You knew (or should have known before spending >$500) the pros and cons of the device when you bought it. If you're having buyer's remorse over it, perhaps you should focus some of your criticism inward. Seems like you're the one who made the bad decision, here.

Tell you what, if you're so disgusted with your iPad, sell it and buy one of the competition, if it ever arrives. I'll be watching for it on craigslist. Given the "uselessness" of the product, I expect to pick it up for a song.

Anyway, the last thing I'll say about this, since I don't want to derail this thread, is that Apple's low single digit worldwide market share proves that people want their computers to be FAST TOOLS, not pretty fashion accessories. And that they will take a computer that is uglier yet considerably cheaper, faster, and more productive than an iMac.

I won't waste any more of my time refuting your point about Windows being just as good as Mac other than to say that I have run and supported Win machines for over twenty years, and even continue to do so. I make an extremely good living doing it. In fact, the irony is that Windows helps to finance my Mac purchases. When I want a stable, pleasant, productive computing experience I use my Mac.

I will address your one statement quoted above, however. The reasons that Apple has lower sales figures than other computers are more complex than your stated reason. One of them is the same reason more people shop at Wal-Mart. We are willing to sacrifice quality of experience for money. Another is the fact that IT departments made the decision de facto for so many people over the years. Now that people have been able to work in a more platform independent world, and the end user is getting to make the choice about their own computing experience, Mac sales rise as the rest of the industry stagnates or falls.

Will it ever match Windows? Absolutely not. Because a bunch of people will always want to compare raw numbers and pricing. But the people who drive Toyota Camrys instead of Dodge Chargers will buy them because they realize that it's not about the raw horses under the hood, but about the overall ownership experience. Reliability and usability.

I've got an ugly Dell Dimension P4 2.8 with 4GB of mem and two 500 GB hard drives that I'll trade you for that iPad...

You might have been thrown by the "Jersey" reference, but you know how to respond with a pleasant and well measured response. :)

Disagree! Here December 21st is winter.

mhhh yeh i just checked that, it seems that the fixed dates for beginnings and ends of seasons isn't as universal as i thought it was...

In Germany it goes like this (usually):

Winter starts December 21st
Spring starts March 21st
Summer starts June 21st
Fall starts September 21st

If you check out the same Wikipedia page in English, it doesn't list any specific dates!

...or the poster lives in Europe. Before there was a New Jersey, there was a Jersey.

It's been almost four years since I bought a Mac. Two years since Apple swapped out my second for a third due to shoddy warranty service.

My first Mac ran 10.4.8 at purchase and now I run 10.6.5 on a late 2008 unibody MacBook. I also run Windows 7 on my Mac and on my PC.

One thing I've learned is that OS X offers no advantages over Windows. None. And I have yet to hear a negative thing said about Windows on this or any other Apple related forum that is actually true and not outdated by nearly 20 years.

There are better alternatives to Macs. If you prefer form over functionality, then you won't find better deals in your opinion. But if you want your computer to be an actual tool, there are far better deals to be had elsewhere.

Look at the Mac mini for instance. It's $699 for 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, DVD writer, integrated GeForce 320M GPU. No keyboard or mouse. At Dell I can get the Zino HD for $749 with an AMD Phenom II X4 (true quad core) 1.7GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB HDD, KB and mouse, a blu-ray reader, and a Radeon 5450 dedicated GPU. The Dell is 2" taller, but about the same weight, width, and depth. Why is the Dell taller? Because it uses a 3.5" HDD. There is absolutely no way a Mac mini is better than that.

Anyway, the last thing I'll say about this, since I don't want to derail this thread, is that Apple's low single digit worldwide market share proves that people want their computers to be FAST TOOLS, not pretty fashion accessories. Go play solitaire

This delay just proves Apple has abandoned the Mac and kill Mac OS within 5 years. I can't believe it's true but it is so obvious now. Apple only cares about iOS.

(OK I just wanted to join in the stupidity of this thread with my own ridiculous contribution.)
