My update to the 3GS went fine.

Has anyone noticed the performance of the 3GS after the update? Mine seems to be rather slow and some of the apps "jerky" when loading them...strange.

So far this update is awesome. Really nice having the same system for my phone and the iPad.

What I think would be great if there was some way to sync/create the folders I have on my phone to my iPad. Maybe a first time deal or something you could manually turn on or off. Would probably have to be one way from the phone since folder sizes are different.

That would help me do what I am going to do anyway.

Took a little bit to get bookmarks, etc synced but all appears to be good.

The create/sync folder would be a challenge since there are dedicated iPad Apps.

ipod content disappeared after 4.2

all my ipod content is missing on the phone but when I connect to itunes it still shows as taking up space.....

all apps are still there though

Is 4.2 containing a new baseband for iphone 4 ? What is it ?

Ok something is not right here, usually downloading an iPhone/iPad update is no problem, through iTunes it suggests and hour but after 30 minutes it just refuses to continue downloading. So I tried the direct link to Apple but still no luck. Anyone got a mirror?

"Dude", I don't have 4.2 installed, am talking about my current experience with version 3. There is no "switcher" on my iPad...and as said above, I am NOT talking about 1000 pages, just 2 or 3 which open perfectly well on OTHER browsers.

I know what you are saying. If amazon is open and you go to any other website, Amazon seems to always reload when you go back to it. Also one time eBay made a duplicate make best offer transaction on me because safari reloaded the page on me and re-posted all of my form data for some reason.

I use iCab now and whenever I browse amazon or ebay there is always a low memory warning on the bottom. I am guessing these are just very memory intensive sites.

Can you (or someone) describe some senarios where Airplay would be of any practical value? The only thing I can think of is if your friend is visiting with video on his iPhone that you otherwise don't have access to.

Well, it's a back-door way to bring apps to the AppleTV for now. We have YouTube and Netflix already, but others like Hulu+, ABC TV, BBC, France 24, etc that have video can now be played on the AppleTV (I'm hoping anyway...I could send their audio streams yesterday).

I'm wondering if FaceTime can be AirPlayed??? Would be cool to pass around the iPhone while on a FaceTime call and have a room of people be able to watch on the TV. Anybody tried that?

This happens sometimes. If you go to about you will see the music is still there. Do a sync with Itunes and it will fix it.

That happened to me a few times years ago. Once a simple reboot fixed it, but another time I need to restore.

iOS 4.2 Walkthrough

New fonts for Notes? Screenshot? I'd like to see the font.

From this comprehensive overview of features:

just bought a song from iTunes, and issues still not fixed!

I did not say buying a song fixes the problem. In iTunes on your Mac, add or delete a song from your iDevice. That should resolve your problem.

If I start viewing on my phone and want to beam it back to my computer without having to load it from scratch on the Mac... Make sense?

Not quite what u want, but I think if you sync your iPhone, then iTunes will know where you were in the movie and you can resume play.

Favorite feature: you can now search within a web page. I think I like that even better than folders!

Much less true in the last year, since the most-missed things “Steve didn’t want” have been added by Apple: added once they were finally ready and working well. (Because of course, Apple did want them.)

The main remaining reasons for people to jailbreak are (in no order):

a) piracy

b) some specific minor things that only a few people want (are they worth all the hassle and potential problems and extra time spent? those issues ARE real)

c) someone telling someone else they should want it (vague buzzwords are useful for this)

d) the sheer hobby value of modding your expensive gear!

This is mostly BS. It's true that Apple has added a few of the features that people jailbreak for, though it took them years after the release of the iPhone to do so. However there are still too many useful programs and extensions that are only available by jailbreaking to justify your snarky and condescending list. Here are a few good reasons for jailbreaking other than pirating software.

  1. FolderEnhancer: removes the 12 item limit of folders. For myself and a lot of others, the 12 item limit is completely lame, since it's very common to have more than 12 apps that you'd like to put in one category.
  2. SBSettings: gives you quick access to many settings and functions. Apple finally added a couple of these as of 4.2 -- brightness and rotation lock -- but there are still many other settings which it's useful to have quick access to.
  3. QuickScroll: Provides draggable scrollbars everywhere there is a list that can be scrolled. No more swiping multiple times to get through a long list where the developer didn't think to add scrollbars.
  4. iBlacklist: ability to block calls from certain callers and at certain times.
  5. A flashlight app that's actually useful, because it can control the screen's brightness.
  6. LockInfo: allows certain functionality to be quickly accessed from your lockscreen without unlocking the phone.
  7. BiteSMS, RealSMS: for people who text a lot, these are replacements to the Messages app with much more functionality.
  8. ToneFXs: lets you customize the alert sounds your iphone makes, when receiving mail, etc.
  9. Internet tethering, via PDANet or MiWi. You could arguably lump this in with piracy, since many cell providers want you to pay extra for this. However for people who just want to tether a handful of times per year, it simply doesn't make sense to pay $30-$40/month for tethering.

I could go on (and on and on), but I think you get the idea. There are many very useful apps which Apple for one reason or another won't allow in the app store, which are just as polished as many Apple-approved apps, and have nothing to do with piracy or stealing services. So I say your claim that Jailbreaking is just for hardcore hobbyists or pirates is bogus.

Crashed!

Happily downloading the update (16 mins in reply to earlier UK comments), and when that finished it switched to preparing to update... then I got Error2. The phone's screen is now the Apple logo with an empty bar underneath it.
iTunes doesn't recognise that the phone is plugged in (and yes I have unplugged and replugged at both ends and restarted). The phone won't turn off either.
Any suggestions?

Thanks
