Don't feel like searching through 500+ comments for the answer- I already have the GM installed for the iPad but iTunes won't let me update.... iPhone updated perfectly though. Any thoughts?

Which build do you have installed?
Just download the Ipsw file directly from Apple. You can find the links if you search the forums. When you have the file, just go to iTunes, press Alt and while pressing click on Check for Updates.
You will be able to select the file you just downloaded.

backup and
"restore" it and it will download 4.2.1 "official"

sorry guys but how do you lock the screen now?
what does it mean software lock? what was wrong with the switch?

Took me a bit to figure that out. Double tap "home button" and then swipe right to reveal lock button. Stupid change.

I'm update my ipad to the new os. It downloaded instantly, but has been trying to run the install for the last 20 minutes. I got the apple logo with the progress bar on my ipad, and it is stalled at the last possible spot on the progress bar. Has this happened to anyone else? I'd like to go home tonight and take my ipad with me, but don't want to unplug it.

Yes, mine is stopped at "Part 2 of 5" in the sync process. I started shortly after 12:00 CST. :(

Thanks! still think it was unnecessary.
Anyway, as I said, the switch doesn't actually send the iPad to mute.... just shows the little bar across the volume icon but the sound is still there........

3 hours, still no verification email from mobileme, so no find my iphone for me.

not sure why apple's servers always are so ill-prepared to handle these new feature rollouts, but it really just tarnishes their image of being a pretty tightly run ship. last few software and hardware updates that include feature upgrades have been brutal.

not that the alternatives are any better, but it would make sense for apple to either stagger rollouts or upgrade their datacenters so that when its user base is expecting new features, they can get them as opposed to being frustrated by their 'hurry up and wait' policy.

Upgrade while traveling? Why?

Download says 68 minutes (and I have a 20mbp internet connection) I have to get to the airport for my T-giving vacation trip... anyone know if I can hook up to my in-laws iTunes and update my iPhone from there? Its not going to be my "primary" computer that I sync with of course... but shouldn't it still work?

Why would you risk something going wrong with the update when you need your phone while traveling?

Wait until you get back to upgrade - and let others beta test the upgrade for you.

WTF is a "double tab"???

Come on Apple - GIVE US OUR SCREEN ROTATION LOCK BACK!!!

-1

Ever tried to get into your iDevice in the middle of the night when it starts making new email or text sounds? I'll take the mute switch, thank you... I've learned not to have to use the rotation lock early on.

People just don't like change... in a month or so if they tried putting it back everyone would complain again.

ANyway, was happy to see my iPad (that typically takes a full day to restore) only take about an hour to upgrade total, including the 40+ minute download.

Well I would only if I could get it backed up. WIth my iPad also with me, not so reliant on the phone. I know you can back up to a computer thats not primary... I just don't know the "gotchas" of everything else.

By the time I get there everyone should have tested the upgrade enough I'd think.. but if its technically not possible I'll obviously wait.

Airplay Audio-only in Safari?

So I updated my iPad to the new iOS 4.2 and my AppleTV to the new 4.1. After rebooting the iPad, I was able to stream videos (with audio) just fine from the iPad to the AppleTV within the Videos and YouTube apps, but not videos embedded in a webpage in Safari. For those, the iPad only gives me the option to stream audio. If I do that, the video will play within Safari on the iPad and the audio switches over to the speakers connected to the AppleTV. Is it supposed to work this way? Would appreciate hearing others' experiences when trying to stream video from within Safari. Thanks.

Will be updating my iPad to get the new features even though I lose my jailbreak. However, my iPhone will remain jailbroken. I'm not ready to give that up.

new feature!

Just discovered you can assign a Contact with a unique Ring tone and Text Tone.. awesome new feature & really handy

Air

Air print sucks in it's current form. Who can use it? About .009% of people... Maybe they should of waited until they had more drivers for other printers.

Really, 5 printers work with it now? The concept is great but the rollout sucks!

Install either the AirPrint Hacktivator (free) or Printopia ($7). Both will enable AirPrint to print to any printer on a Mac. Apple pulled support for all but HP e-print printers at the last minute most likely due to licensing issues. I'm guessing we'll see it enabled officially in 10.6.6 or so.
