well, i actually managed to download the entire thing but my actual phone won't update with the update because i get the server down message.

is there actually a way around this seeing as i download the update?

Really impressed with how smooth iOS 4.2 performs on the iPad. Folders and multitasking are great on it.

The 'Find My iPhone' feature is fantastic too. First time I've ever played with it and I'm really impressed.

Still need to update my Apple TV. Not going to do it yet though I have a rented movie downloaded and need to watch before I update.

Is MobileMe servers getting upgrades or something?

It synced everything over fine last week on a fresh install of the 4.2 GM ipad but on a fresh install of this final official version, MobileMe is refusing to pull down bookmarks and contacts to my iPad. Not a happy bunny :(

not sure why apple's servers always are so ill-prepared to handle these new feature rollouts

The files aren't being served from Apple Consumer Electronics Inc servers - Apple uses a CDN (Akamai).

Airprint and Airplay are severely crippled. What were these guys thinking?

They're thinking that you'll pay extra for the Iphone 5 out in a few months with this feature.

Apple wants you to send your current Itoy to the toxic waste dump every year, and upgrade to the new one.

Hopefully jailbreakers get on this screen orientation lock thing soon.

Changing it to a mute switch is one of the stupidest ideas in history.

My download's just finished (finally), I'll sort out my phone tomorrow though, iPad is enough for today. I've managed to get through the verification stage.

Just wish they would rethink the orientation lock! Looking forward to folders and MT though..

Give it some time.
Today is a very busy day ya know?

Had that problem yesterday when I put 4.2.1 GM on my iPod touch 2G and did a fresh install....so it was before the server stress of today. At first I tried deleting and re starting my Mobile Me settings, but it still didn't work. Then I went in and toggled off and back on each of the sync choices, Calendar, Bookmarks, Contacts, etc. and then it seemed to work OK.

Apples servers

Tried to download the minute 4.2 came out, said 17 mins to download but as more and more people tried to download, its just finished downloading after 4 hours! hope this new data centre they have solves some of these probs.

just installing now, hope it fast on my "old 3g"

was looking forward to find my iphone but its not supported according to apples website :(

agree with the guy earlier who compared the stability of 4.2 on the iPhone 4 to os x. iOS is really starting to feel solid, and everything just feels that bit smoother. It may have been frustrating, but looking back I'm glad they took a little extra time to iron things out. Other than that, I don't have any need for any of the new features, and I can't imagine having one of those text tones go off in public, but nice to be all up to date I guess.

iPhone 4.
  • Download took 2 hours.
  • Install took 20 mins.
  • No big differences that I can see.

Kinda disappointing, I needn't have accepted the update.

Here's hoping there's a bunch of app upgrades just around the corner. I can understand some of the "commercial" ones (ABC, Hulu, etc.) might hold out. But hoping to see updates to BBC, France 24, RT, and other news channel apps that stream content not usually available in the US. Also, it seems like Safari should work for streaming video....but I suppose there's no way to activate it by website and some providers of internet content may balk at Apple "broadcasting" their video to a TV??

Dang it. Time to upgrade. As I'm still on OS X 10.4 at home, I can't upgrade my iTunes from ver. 9 to 10. That's why even though my iTunes states there is a new software version for my 3GS iPhone, clicking on the UPDATE button only reveals that I am running the latest iTunes software 9.2.1 and doesn't perform the iPhone iOS update.

Rats. Oh well, good thing I work in IT so I can grab 10.5. Still, annoying. :(

A have a little sympathy for you, but...

On one device (your iPhone) you want to use the latest software.
On another device (your Mac) you want to use 5 year old software.
But you want Apple to make the two devices talk to each other to satisfy your different choices?

I'm guessing Apple doesn't think it's cost effective to expend time and energy making state-of-the-art 2010 iPhone software backward compatible with a Mac OS they released in 2005.

ok this is making me very angry. i'm also in the UK, have downloaded the update but afterwards it everytime says that the server is down.

how on earth can you install the update but i have been unable to do so for the past 4 hours!!!

:(

Anyone getting airplay over multiple speakers using airplay from an iPhone? I have been streaming over an airport express and an AppleTV using the remote app but can you do this just from the iPhone?

I tried... doesnt seem to support it ... i wanna have my music streaming all over my house.

Thanks, Steve...

I've bought 3 iPad 3G's for various members of my family and we were all very happy with the functionality of the orientation lock. I would really, really appreciate it if in the next release of iOS that an option in the General Settings section would be there to change it back.

Not cool, Steve... Way not cool.

^^^^^ I'm glad they changed it to match the iPhone's OS. I'd rather have a mute toggle. How hard is it to find the orientation lock icon?

Don't worry, you'll get used to it.

You could always wait until the entire world isn't downloading it at the same time......

/just sayin'

Double tap (or double click) the home button. Them swipe to the right. The lock screen button appears. After using it for a while doesn't seem too bad, having said that I now have a useless switch on the side of the iPad that doesn't send it into "mute". Apart from that it works great.

Finally. I have been waiting all day to get home and grab iOS 4.2. FMIP was the only thing that had me thinking about MM but I could never pull the trigger.

I just want to yell that my ipad feels much better now. Among various updates, I like game center best. I think the gaming experience is much better on ipad than iphone. The bigger body and bigger screen just make control much easier. The only upset I used to have was no game center, so I couldn't share any game results with others. Now I can! I just played Real Racing with a stranger online. Man, you gonna try that. Online gaming has much more fun, especially when you win the game hardcore.

I was extremely excited about AirPlay that I gathered the entire family around the TV and turned on the AppleTV. I was about to show them how a video I just recorded on my iPhone could not be streamed live only to be met with disappointment.

AirPlay does not support iPhone 4 Camera Roll videos...seriously? I then tried AirVideo and it also doesn't support that. So I have to connect my iPhone 4 to my iMac, sync it to iTunes, then sync it back to my iPhone in order for it work? Wouldn't it then just be easier to play it from my computer thus ruining the entire purpose of AirPlay. C'mon Steve Jobs how could you overlook this.

Might be to do with the fact that the videos you shoot on your phone would require a much greater data transfer rate than your wifi can achieve, whereas videos already on your iPhone from iTunes (or youtube) are compressed.
