All I am really waiting for is Folders. Right now some of my apps are again pushed to the imaginary 12. Homescreen :(. Most are "Website enhancing apps" so they are not that big.

anyone else just check for update and have it say that iOS 4 is available? my eyes almost popped out

The GM iOS 4 files sizes are:

iPhone 3G = 378MB
iPhone 3G = 292MB
iPod Touch 3rd Gen = 357MB
iPod Touch 2nd Gen = 309MB

These are the GM downloads, the final ones may be bigger by 1 or 2 MB.

Thanks !
and thanks to all the other folks that took the time to answer too.

anyone know what the benefits of iOS4 will be for 3G users?
Obviously most of the features wont work on this model because of technical restrictions, so what will? is it even worth updating? or will iOS4 just suck more battery life than ever before?

Drinking the apple kool-aid here are we?
There is no discernable reason that the iPhone 3g will not multitask.
This is purely a software restriction apple is imposing sk they may slowly phase out the 3g and have only two devices at a time on the market (the 3gs and 4 in this case)

I have been multitasking with a jailbroken iPhone since late 2008. The 3g handles it fine as long as safari is occasionally managed regarding how many open windows it has as it is the bloated app on the iPhone regarding ram consumption.

I played with JB on my 3G and went back to the official release. IMHO there's not enough RAM or CPU to make multitasking anything but a painful experiment without 3GS or 4 hardware.

Hopefully having this on my 3GS will be enough to restrain me from an iPhone 4 especially as I'm not due for an upgrade when I just got this in December, but that white iPhone 4 sure does look nice.

Yes, it is purely a software restriction but no, it's not a sneaky method to phase out 3G, it's because the 3G only has 128M ram and a slower processor.

People who have enabled the iOS 4 multitasking on 3G (doable with jailbreak) says it's slow. So Apple set the bar for the best user experience.

If they really was out to phase out the 3G they could just have stopped it from using iOS 4 at all. But that's not what they want.

for all intents and purposes, the 3G will not multitask. stop talking like jail breaking is some sort of standard feature. some of us choose not to risk bricking our phones and voiding warrantees because we want to push outdated hardware to the absolute limit.

using standard software=drinking apple koolaid?

your mean spirited BS doesn't make you cool.

Presumably someone in Cupertino pushes a button at a particular time for the whole shebang to go "live".

Equally likely is the notion that this time is set by someone rather than a bunch of Apple Techs pondering another coffee break and thinking "Let's leave it another 20 minutes".

However, we have no access to their schedule.

Past experience suggests the times indicated above.

I've been off work ill all day and have greatly enjoyed the speculation but am now crawling up the stairs to start mindlessly clicking Check for Update...

1pm EST makes sense so they can have lots of support around when we all try to download. It's also when most people in North America would be at work, many unable to update until they get back, so hopefully the initial load isn't as crazy as it could be.

Who knows? I highly doubt that support desk people have an official release time and are probably going by their own assumptions or by past releases.

It's all speculation from this point.

Yeah I guess you never know with apple, for instance I thought the white iPhone 4 was coming out on the 24th.
