so because this is a thread about the iOS4, I have a question about updating!

so when I update will I lose all my textmessaging and personal settings:confused:! this doesn't sound that important but I have alot of messages I want to keep on my phone and because I can't back it up?

so small story short! will I lose everything i customized on my Iphone

When I installed the GM release everything but my contacts and text messages was deleted. I had to re-pop my pictures, music and apps. Mostly likely it will be the same with this "official" release. Not sure if doing a regular restore will put the content back with customizations. Good luck!

I've jailbroken my 32gb 3gs 3.1.3 to see what jailbreaking's all about, and i've got no real use for it.

I want to upgrade to iOS4 ASAP. Therefore, in preparation, is there anything I need to do to make a smooth upgrade guaranteed?

Or can I just install iOS4 onto my JB'd 3.1.3 and have it keep my contacts/SMS/Apps and overwrite the jailbreak?

Cheers..

You can't update OTA and you can't keep your data if you update with someone else's library. Well, you MIGHT if you plug it in and tick "Manually manage media" (paraphrasing, but it's something like that) on your iPhone page in iTunes.

Actually you can update it on any other itunes library without losing all your media. I've updated my phone with every update since 2.0 at my work computer (which my phone isn't synced to), and my media is on the phone after the update every time.

This may have changed with the 4.0 update, but I know in the past all updates preserved the contents of the phone.

To update from a jailbroken device you need to restore.

I assume you have your phone set up to manually manage the media on it then?

I'm really hoping Apple learn its lesson from the release of OS 3.0. Such a huge plethora of folks downloading the OS, then when activating the OS through iTunes, it would hang up and never activate. I couldn't use my phone for almost an entire day.

Well, let's see what happens today.

I think you're going to want to un-jailbreak it before you update it to 4.0. You can just do a full backup and restore, it should preserve all your media files.

Nope, smart playlists and everything, itunes on my home computer manages it. The update button will not do any sort of sync operation, though I believe it does a backup of the phone, which is different from a sync.

If you hit restore after 4.0 comes out it should just restore to 4.0.

I would restore it to a non-jailbroken 3.1.3 first, just in case. You could probably get away with installing right over the jailbreak, but I'd imagine that installing factory settings over factory settings would be ideal.

Sorry if someone has already asked/answered this.
Could someone who's downloaded the GM tell us about how big this is ?
I'm not at my comfy home with my speedy internet, I'm on my Verizon 3G aircard.

alright, i assume that means i've got to restore all 30gb of my data too.. which is going to take a while.

Seems though that I can still BACKUP fully my JB'd 3.1.3 to get the latest contacts / sms etc, then restore, then restore my backup and it should be OK.

3.12 and 3.13 were about 230-240MB. I'm guessing iOS4 will be a bit bigger, but it would surprise me if it went much past 300.

I seem to recall it being about ~380MB.

The GM iOS 4 files sizes are:

iPhone 3G = 378MB
iPhone 3G = 292MB
iPod Touch 3rd Gen = 357MB
iPod Touch 2nd Gen = 309MB

These are the GM downloads, the final ones may be bigger by 1 or 2 MB.
