10am PST makes perfect sense. Think about it. Releasing this software requires someone to actually initiate the changes on the servers. That means people at work at Apple. For the sake of a few hours, it seems foolish for Apple to expect their employees to come in during the middle of the night in order to deal with this. Also, what happens if there is a problem? Suddenly they have reduced staff on hand (and tired ones at that). Releasing 1 hour after the staff arrive at work (I'm assuming 9am start) makes perfect sense. Apple then have full staff on hand should there be a major problem.

What will iOS 4 be like on my 2nd gen iPod Touch? I know it won't have multi tasking, but will I still be able to lock the screen orientation? How about a home screen background picture? And what else won't work on it that's a bigger feature of iOS? I know folders should work, but is that it?

For you (and others) asking about features, in addition to the many articles posted since WWDC and Apple's own keynote and press releases, AppleInsider did a nice summary of major iOS 4 features again today: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/06/21/first_look_apples_ios_4_for_iphone_ipod_touch.html

GOOGLE your ****ing questions! Stop whining and wasting other peoples time.

Has anyone stopped to notice that all of 5 apps have actually been updated with 4.0 compatibility? Get ready for huge disappointment today as 4.0 launches with absolutely no apps compatible with. Not only ilk there be no multitasking today, but most apps crash on 4.0 currently. Enjoy!

Because the person(s) who choose it have better taste than you?

Ugly? Hardly. How are water droplets on glass ugly? You may not like it, I think it looks cool. Regardless, you can easily change it. So who gives a ****?
You tell 'em! 75% of the human body as well as the surface of the earth is water.

A-ha! Somebody finally using some logic!!!!

Staffing up all night for some early adopters to get it is a waste of resources. People anxiously awaiting the release of a new OS are just a minority of overall users. Many aren't going to remember the update is here until they sync up with iTunes for the day.

A mid-late morning Pacific time lets them get all their ducks in a row.

Your point is logical but i dont think apple cares about customer experience especially after the debacle with pre-orders on the iphone 4. They surely didnt seem to have enough servers/people/etc at a time when they were taking customers money so i wouldnt think they would care when pushing some update for free.

I live on the east coast. When can it get the update? on itunes it shows the iphone with backgrounds and folders but under that where it says check for update it says everything is up to date. HELP!!

Few hours time?

Or just download the GM which is available already all over the internet!

Apple wants the world to have iOS4...

It's suddenly free for the taking, even if you're a lowly ipod owner, because of iAds.

iAds are going to seep into your brain and make you get things you may not even want. You'll get them even if you can't afford them... Steve will slowly but surely take over the world with his sneaky subliminal persuasions. Beware people. I seened this before in the trailer park.

Signed... brainwashed by Apple ever since my 1984 128k Macintosh.

I don't know what MOST APPS means to you, but out of my 50 apps, 1 or 2 have crashed on iOS4 in the past week... But everything else works even better than on ios3.
And I have a feeling we'll be seeing a LOT updates posted today..

That's right, you can't use an iPhone. The iPhone uses you.

The only apps that background are VOIP apps, music players, apps that are temporarily doing something in the background (like uploading files), GPS apps and I think there's one or two other types.

Other apps always close and the apps bar just acts like a quick task switcher for those.

That is almost everything. Apps built with the 4.0 sdk can support fast app switching, which means that their previous state is saved and loaded. This actually makes the phone seem much faster and is really simple for devs to implement.

hmm I think you are confusing incompetence with not caring. Personally, I managed to reserve a 32gb with no problem at all. Actually, I reserved 2 with two different Apple ID's. Neither was a problem. I guess I was lucky.
