I'd like to think that folks who are posting in this thread who are having difficulty figuring out this PM concept are just not quite ready to run a beta OS on (presumably) their only handheld device, with no guarantee of being able to go back to what they had at the beginning.

As much as this pains me to type this....if folks want to be able to download and install a beta OS on their phone at any time, maybe those individuals need to look at the Blackberry platform....

I don't think they're having difficulty figuring out how to PM. I think the problem is that some of them are newbies and don't have the 5 posts necessary to be able to PM other members.

Still showing as non 64-bit on my machine

Because it's 64 bit only when you install it on Lion. Looks like it's a very fat binary with a 32 bit carbon for Leopard and Snow Leopard and 64 bit Cocoa for Lion. It even has fullscreen button on Lion now :) Pretty fast too.

I would love to add my devices ipad2 and 3gs. If you can help me my add is dnaresh at gmail dot com

You guys don't need to pay to be on some dev account.

Just register at ibetatest.com and apply for as many open beta as possible and make sure you put in your uid before you do so. You may have to wait a few days but I'm sure a developer will add you to beta test their app. They will add your devices to their dev account and then you can activate the iOS 5 beta.

I been using it for a few hours.
To be honest, besides the notifications and syncing in the background there is nothing that you must have right now. Cloud syncing may be useful if you have multiple iOS devices. At least they made find my iphone free and got rid of mobile me.

I wish they improved google contact syncing, not all fields are supported or sycned correctly. I actually liked the music and videos combined in the iPod app. Swiping down on the status bar reveals the notification dashboard. I hope they extend it so apps can interface with it. I don't do stocks so I have no use for that info. I went into the Stock app and removed everything and now have a blank area where that info used to be. It needs customization, something I hope makes it into the next beta build along with the wifi syncing enabled.

IMHO there's something missing from the current notification lock screen - a "persistent" option. I'd like to be able to see my next three calendar items and last three emails at a glance.

Instead, I can only see notifications. The difference is, once you unlock the screen, they're gone... hope Apple add this before release!

Thank you very much for the download link huss8585;)

From a security stand point, I see this new integration and cloud syncing as a major security concern. My concern is this, when does it end? Is there anything about our personal lives that cannot be and will not be accessed in order to profile us? I have long since said that a smart phone is evidence to be used against us. Even if we are not doing anything illegal a individuals private business is just that it's private and should not be accessible via cloud storage by individuals in government and corporate entities. Problem with this scenario is that people are "willingly" lining up and freely doing this under the enticement of simplicity and sheer laziness because they are unwilling to educate themselves about these powerful tools in which they are wielding, the (P.C) is the tool in which people "choose" to remain ignorant about. This is a very scary scenario when viewed in the proper educated perspective and light.

We are entering into a age where people are willingly giving up their freedoms and liberties and constitutional rights for the sheer convenience of being lazy and are being allowed to remain ignorant and they basically posses a loaded gun metaphorically speaking!

Sorry, I know most will disagree with my perspective on this but, I see it as societies responsibility to educate and empower people not endorse ignorance and laziness!

So first off - quite a lot of us understand this already and also understand that the trade off is: take part in the modern world and give lots of information away - or don't.

Secondly - horse, bolted, stable door. If you have a *mobile phone* and use a credit or debit card you are already screwed. Everytime your phone connects to the network someone knows where you are. Everytime you buy something someone knows what you are up to. Everytime you search on google chances are they can work out a lot about you - what you watch on tv, what you eat, what you worry about etc. etc.

Smart phones and loyalty cards and website logins are just *other* people tapping into your information flow but seriously, while your points are valid, if people really don't want companies to know what they are doing - only use public payphones and only pay by cash.

A rela game changer for Computer Guys

While everyone here is thinking about how the cool iOS changes the User experience, I can't stop thinking about how it changes my job as a computer scientist. I think this mainstream adoption of Cloud computing will change the job descriptions of many hardware and software engineers (http://bit.ly/jHOczu). Cores, client platforms, network, servers, everything will be impacted -- in a positive way. Thanks to apple for rejuvenating out field!

Can't believe you need to PAY for mail sounds. That's ridiculous! Apple finally got rid of the paying ringtones, so why make them return with mail? Why can't I just use any WAV or MP3 file? FFS!

Mulit finger gestures?

Does anybody have tried the multi finger gestures on the iPad? Are the still working in the beta?

Xcode needed to update iPad with iOS 5?

Hi,

I got a developer account to try this puppy. I want to be sure, do I need to install Xcode and update from there to iOS 5 or I can update after installing iTunes 10.5 and registering the device UDID in the Provisioning Portal (no Xcode needed).

Thanks for your answers.

Gus

I know this is a noob question, but I've
Signed up to be a dev but didn't have to pay anything, I can log into the dev section at apple. The thing is I haven't actually done any yet, can I still get iOS5 on my Ipad2 or iphone4? Or do I need to pay? I've got the dev program too??

That's pretty cool. If it's 64 bit, does that mean it's Cocoa now, or have they implemented 64 bit support in Carbon on Lion?

Hi guys!
Can somebody confirm that Nike+ GPS app does work on iOS 5? I will be very thankful!

Seems to work fine.

hi,

can you please check if there is possibility to set SMS delivery msgs?

thnx.

l.

There's a setting to show people when you have read their messages.

Settings -> Notifications ;)

I'd like to be able to decide what I want to put there too. Like the weather, things that I want to just glance at and not go through the tapping dance. The slider for each notification item is a nice touch.

Seems like some things are broken. Video for Netflix/Hulu, but not MLB or Youtube (the latter two use the default black and blue player so I feel like that's the line). No wireless sync. Custom tones and vibrations don't seem to be working yet.

Also, I've been syncing with my PC because my mac is a laptop. Doesn't seem like Windows is going to be supported well out of the gate. Anxious for the Match service. If I don't have to sync with or keep my laptop on to have all my music I can move back to an all mac environment for my phone and ATV.

I've been soured on the folder setup for some time (I think that this update should have been 4...we really had those ugly blue notifications for 5 years??), but something I think people are overlooking is the Newsstand app. The way this app works is it opens like a folder and the app fills the "folder" window (as in the app works IN the home screen). This at least brings the possibility of some sort of widget functionality. What I'd really like to see, and what they have already done the legwork to do, is an up-sliding dock with widgets (they shouldn't be stuffed up with the notifications) that when tapped go to their apps, but I guess that was too much for this round.

I don't like how they separated the iPod app into two separate things. It was good to have just one place to go. It just means thats another icon to clutter up my home screen, when it is completely unnecessary.

Issue with Syncing

Hey guys - anybody having this issue...?

I connect my iOS5 iPhone to my 10.5beta iTunes, but the "sync" button is greyed out and it doesn't sync a thing! As such - no music on my phone and I've had to redownload all my apps (thank God the "cloud" works for that part!).

I'm not set up for any manual management, and when I change anything and click "apply" I briefly see something about "reconciles changes" but no sync actually happens.

I'm loving iOS5, but miss my music! :(

My biggest personal want is the ability to airplay to multiple airport expresses from the idevice itself (not remote app). Can anybody tell me if this has been implemented on iOS 5 yet?

Wireless syncing isn't active yet. You have to plug in.
