Seriously lol at all the people who think it'll be over 3G and such.

They won't even let you download any app over 10MB over 3G, you think theyll let you do a 600MB+ update?

This is a welcome feature, frees up a USB port on my laptop and is very convenient :D

Time for Apple to learn what a patch is. Best example of patching desperately being needed is Xcode which requires the whole 4.25gb app to be downloaded every single time they update. They could change 1 line of code and you need to download 4.25gb. That's just bad design.

I wouldn't mind this, but definitely want the option to turn it off.

1.) 3G in my area is spotty at best, and often is under 100kbps downstream. I have no desire to sit around and have my phone be useless while this downloads/installs.

2.) If it installs automatically, I've lost all interest. Stay away from my jailbreak!

This would absolutely stink over Verizon.

1. SLOW network

2. If a voice call comes in, I lose my data session and I have to start over!

Not quite sure why anyone thinks this is a big deal, or would even want it. 3G or Wifi. I mean, do you need an OS update so badly you can't wait until you can just plug it into a computer and have it done in a few minutes?

Not being sarcastic, just think it is kind of a totally useless "feature". Now wireless sync on the other hand is something that would be nice for daily sync, backup etc.

Every time engineers are trying to be clever they run the risk of messing things up. Taking the old iOS, removing it completely, and installing a completely new, fresh iOS is safe and risk free. Trying to be clever and replace only the right things risks messing up things and leaving a very, very, very unhappy customer.

But don't they manage patches with Mac OS X all the time... ? And Mac OS X has much more of the OS exposed and accessible to the user (more to be tinkered with).

I would just like smaller, incremental updates. To be honest I don't mind attaching the phone to the computer to backup before an update at all, it just seems sensible. Updating over 3G before backing up seems risky... unless the backup will happen as part of their 'iCloud' system perhaps?

This could be cool but I am amazed how many people say it's too hard to connect to iTunes for a back up. Last night I got home from work, plugged in my iPhone to install the update then took a shower. When I was done with my shower and stuff it was all done.

who cares about carriers?

Over-the-air updates over the cellular network is a fine idea, but it's just not that important. That's not really a capability I value at all. Nice, but so what?

What Apple should have done a long time ago is made it possible to update and sync iDevices over WiFi. There is enough bandwidth on WiFi to do all of that just fine. And there is no technical reason it can't be done.

Seriously, why the heck, when I'm at home on my WiFi network (Apple gear too, btw) do I need to connect my iPhone to my computer with a stupid USB cable? If I want to install an iOS patch or simply add a couple of songs from my iTunes library, I should be able to do it while I'm sitting on the couch, or at the dinner table. Having to use a cable is sooooo 5 years ago.

This. I could care less about wireless updating of iOS, it's not that frequent to be an issue. What I would like is to be able to sync up calendars, contacts, etc without having to plug into my iMac. What would really be nice is cloud syncing of my calendars (through iCal) but that would just be a plus.

It's a combination of a nicety, and to keep pace with the others. WP7 and Android based devices have this now, so it only makes sense. I'm sure folks will complain, and poke fun at Apple [e.g. "Magical"]...lol. But, it's a good thing.

If they can do this, add solid notifications, allow some minimal customization, and lastly some form of a "Widget" based system, it'll kill. I personally think the last part is a waste, but that's me. I don't even use the widgets on OSX, and tried them on an Android device. I found it more of an annoyance than anything. But that's just my personal opinion. Some people love them...

perhaps the negotiating is FREE 3G downloads. if it is coming from Apple, as an iOS update there is no charge (for downloaded data).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

This sounds like a new feature for iOS 5. I'm surprised that nothing has leaked out in regards to what iOS 5 has to offer. The rumor is it's supposed to be a major revamp of the OS, but I am really excited to see it in about a month.

Please Apple, wirelessly update everything (iTunes, iPhotos etc). It is long overdue. Plugging my iPhone into my MacBook make absolutely little sense.

It actually makes a lot of cents... For Apple.
You don't get to billions in profits by selling just phones. ;)

Sounds good. Not that connecting to iTunes once in a while to update/backup/sync is a problem for me.

It'll be nice as an option. Could careless either way. No update is that important. I can wait til I get home really. Can't wait til June to see what's coming to iOS 5 though.

I would always want an offline firmware update and local backup available, so wifi iOS updating is definitely not what I want. Got burned a few years back on a Belkin router that died during an online firmware update so im never going try that again.

Too much stuff is heading for the cloud. I want it on terra firma thankyouverymuch.

Apple is copying android!? /sarcasm

I am sure you will have the option to download over wifi or over 3g(if they establish a patch system)

Android has been doing this since the beginning, no issues with it in the android community.
