Great!

Now how about we consider getting rid of "newsstand"? Or at least giving users the option to. Along with many other useless Apple apps that can't be deleted?

Now that would be even better.

Or at least allow us to dump them in folders. I hardly ever use newstand or compass. They take up needless space because I cant' stick them in a folder!

Don't get your panties all tangled up, there will still be a YouTube app. Google wouldn't pass that up lol.

Apple is dropping google. no surprise there.

back in 2007 I remember steve jobs proudly display these apps (youtube & maps) and says they work closely with google team to bring these services to the iPhone. boy how times changed.

Really quite surprised that apparently nearly everyone uses Safari for YouTube on their iPhone anyway, I've always used the stock YouTube app. Perhaps Apple picked up on this and realised they could now do away with it without too much backlash. Probably a good thing - Google's YouTube app on Jelly Bean is great, and we might see this standard come to iOS as a new app.

FINALLY! I hated being ripped out of Safari and into the app just to watch a video... The App was only there when Youtube was flash only in 2007.

The iPhone can only play h264 encoded vids so YouTube wasn't "flash only" when the app came out. Otherwise there wouldn't have been any content for the YouTube app to play. ;)

What are you going on about? The app hasn't been updated in ages, the web is better now. It's not like they're dropping support of Youtube. Just killing off a dated app. It made sense back then.

Even understanding that the mobile web version of YouTube actually provides much greater functionality than the standalone app, I used it.
I'd prefer to put the YouTube app's development in the hands of Google - let it be reside in the App Store like Gmail and Google Earth and Google's other products. Apple's anemic effort to keep it updated was annoying.
It's refreshing to get an official word about a change from someone at Apple, though.
I've kept using the YouTube app since it frees Safari up for other tasks while I put it in the background playing a concert or something. Not that I can't do the same with two browser apps, but it's what I've gotten used to.

thank god. the youtube app done by apple was horrible. now that google has control, hopefully it will be loads better and get frequent updates

Google sticking a knife in Apple's back is your opinion.

Not an "opinion" but a fact. Google went from partner to competitor with Android.

You're awfully emotional about an OS and a piece of electronics.

You seem as devoted to Google as anyone here is devoted to Apple.

And good luck getting Apple to create a search engine that can even remotely compete with Google. Seriously. Good luck.

Yes, I'm sure no one will ever be able to best Google in search. Ever.

Update: The Verge reports that Apple has issued a statement acknowledging the removal.(Thanks to Elijah Walsh for screenshot!)

Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store.

I'd bet money that Apple's license to include Google's Maps app in iOS expires the same day as their license to include the YouTube app.

Now they just need to let us uninstall the other crap that comes (e.g stocks) pre-loaded and replace it with other apps.

They still need to let us remove the mail and safari apps and replace them (or at least let you select a default app to use).

Thank you Community!

Thank you for giving me the hint to disable YouTube and to use the "add to home screen" function for YouTube. This is awesome! I didn't even know that you can do this. You are absolutely right: The page m.youtube.com is way more veristile and responsive and it allows HD video over 3G!

I really learned something useful today,

Thanks again!
