With two weeks left before the alleged date of the keynote, i'm beginning to change my mind.. It's probably too late for another beta.
Beta 4 is mostly stable, so it's likely the next release will be the GM at the iPhone event. I guess we shall see..

I don't think beta 4 is that stable, maps app is full of bugs, for example, and the 21st of September iPhone launch is not confirmed....

The 12th and 21st dates have been confirmed independently by many reliable sources, ESPECIALLY AllThingsD and Jim Dalrymple of The Loop. I'd say it's pretty much confirmed at this point...

I love this logic "It works fine for me so it must not have any issues". Beta 4 has made it impossible for me to continue work on the streaming portion of my app. The fact that I will have to suspend development for a month+ is pretty disappointing.

That logic was never in effect. I was stating IN MY OWN EXPERIENCE.

I felt the GM was coming next because of the combination of a) September launch rumours for the new iPhone, and b) my own experiences with beta 4 which, from a USER point of view I find very stable.

I never once used your logic. No need to get so pent up my friend.

It will be confirmed when the invitation comes out

So now here's my question. The GM is expected to be released when the iPhone 5 is announced (sept 12), and is is expected to be released to the public BEFORE the iPhone 5 is launched (sept 21). This would leave less than 9 days for a) devs to sufficently test their apps against the GM software b)test and adjust their apps for the new iPhone screen size c)submit to Apple for review d)apple to review the (likely) 50-100 thousand of pending app updates e)Apple to approve and release the updates.

That timeline just seems ridiculous to me.... So since it appears that there will be no beta 5, and due to the fact that iOS 6 MUST be released prior to iPhone 5 release, it seems like the thing most likely to change is the GM release date. I'm thinking a GM release next week (likely 3-5 Sept) with an official release 2 weeks later (likely 19-20 Sept). That would leave around 16-17 days instead of 9 days.

Apple could possible release a 2nd GM on Sept 12 which is identical to the first one, but adding iPhone 5 specific feature (like screen size).

Apple did the same back when iPhone 4 and 3rd generation iPad came out, each with new retina targets. It took some developers just few days to crank out the retina version, some months.

You're confused. Developers are not REQUIRED to submit updated apps before the public release...

No, I don't think you understand my point. The new screen size is a portion of it, but I'm referring more to the fact from GM to release would need to be< 9 days. Most likely 6, 7 or 8 days. That just seems like a quick turnaround in general to do last minute testing PLUS all the time it takes for Apple to approve the apps. Most updates seem to take a couple weeks to come out on a regular basis... now with everyone submitting at once it will be a nighmare.

And now especially because that Sept 12 dates would have left us on beta 4 for 5 1/2 weeks, I'm just suggesting that maybe Apple would bump out the GM a week earlier, allowing for a longer approval period.

I don't know how long all the previous GM's have been.

Not required to, but if they don't want their app to be particularly buggy it would be nice...

The GM will not drop until the new iPhone is announced. The GM SDK will surely have a simulator that (officially) supports the new screen size, and they won't release that until the new iPhone is official.

You only have to submit if your app uses iOS 6 APIs. And if your app uses iOS 6 APIs, it does not necessarily have to be available on the App Store the day iOS 6 is publicly available. It is Apple's job to make sure iOS 5.x apps will work on the new iPhone.

No, what will happen is that apps that were built to handle flexible sizing will work properly, and those that don't will be screwed up. Its the dev's fault for not making it adjust to the screen size. Apple has been telling devs for years to not hard code sizing in. So while many apps will be fine and not need an update, the devs that didn't follow Apple's suggestions from the beginning will have to scramble to fix.

No, what will happen is that apps NOT built for taller screen will be letterboxed (with bars or some widget on top and/or bottom of the screen).

And it is impossible to not hard code for size for apps like games.

The new screen size will be irrelevant. Apps will work just fine on the new iPhone if they aren't optimized for it. Same with the iPhone 4 and retina display, and same with the original iPad - all apps worked. And since pixels are only being added in one direction, rather than an entirely new resolution, development on some apps shouldn't take too long at all. I'm also sure Apple will have brought a few developers to HQ like they did the original iPad and have big-name developer apps optimized day one.

On to your other point, I think you forget that developers have had iOS 6 for ~2 months now. Yes it was a beta, but developers have had all the new APIs to make sure their apps work on iOS 6. When the GM becomes available, developers will test their apps against the GM and make any necessary changes. Since I don't see I big change from beta 4 to GM, most developers probably have a version that is 100% ready to go as we speak, maybe minus a few minor bugs. Regardless, it isn't like they will just be given the APIs on GM release and have to come up with something from scratch.

And Apple knows that they will be releasing a new resolution and they know that there are currently around 500,000 apps on the App Store...so I'm sure they will be able to handle the demand of approvals in a timely manner.
