Disabling?

I'm fine with it, so long I can hide the 'post on facebook' menu item, or whatever they call it.

As an experiment, I can't for the life of me make the 'Tweet' menu option disappear. I've removed my twitter accounts, switched off Photos in the twitter settings, removed the Twitter app, restarted the phone. After all that, the 'Tweet' menu option is still there. Have I missed something or is there no way of getting rid of that option?

I just quit Facebook. Now Apple is trying to bring them back to me?
Where is the petition site to stop this disaster from happening?

The report also includes the caveat that Apple has been known to change its mind in the past, but as of right now Facebook integration is reportedly set to be unveiled in iOS 6 at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference later this month.
What a cop-out at the end of the story. If Apple was initially going to offer iOS 6 integration for Facebook and later changed its mind, it would have had to made that decision some time ago.

I've got equally compelling news. I am 100% certain that Apple is going to introduce a new Mac Pro. Or not. Because Apple has been known to change its mind. We'll know for sure when they make the announcement that it's either upgraded or discontinued.

See? It's easy to start a rumor when you can qualify it by saying that Apple is currently planning to do something, but might later change its mind. After all, who can prove you wrong?

As I've said in my previous posts. I'll say it again:

Don't sign in. Simples.

Why is this so hard for people to understand?

If you don't want Facebook integrated into YOUR iOS experience, then guess what YOU HAVE THAT OPTION.

Again:

DON'T SIGN IN. SIMPLES.

The arrogance and entitlement and stupidity on this lame issue is astounding.

The button itself is a system wide set item. Can't be removed, same as the "Send as Message" or "Email" buttons. I would gather the "Post to FB" button will always be on. However it would be nice to hide if you don't want to see it.

I will really enjoy having FB straight in iOS. However, I wish the implantation could be different. Set up similar so that with a stock iOS6 there is no social media integration, but then you download social media integration through a part of the app store. Then individual sites could offer stuff up. If LinkedIn wanted it, they could do the set up and have it available for download. Or the same for the google Facebook thing. And I'm wondering why they never built in anything for Ping, yes, no one really uses Ping, but that might have inspired some people to jump on it.

I'd feel better if I knew there was absolutely zero outbound traffic to Facebook with the feature turned off. "Just don't use it" is hardly a guarantee that Facebook isn't somehow still tracking/spying on your activities.

Steps we should take on iOS 6:

1. Monitor all outbound traffic and connections from an iOS 6 device
2. If we discover it's communicating with Facebook regardless of sign in status,
3. Raise a big stink about it and shame the companies into including a true "OFF" setting

Facebook NOT!

I have multiple iOS devices (iPads) and needing Facebook for anything on my iOS device is a massive fail for me. I don't use Facebook and social networking. So, if anything I do day to day on my iOS needs me to deal with Facebook, Apple just lost a customer.

If I need Facebook in the newest version of MacOS, I'll never upgrade and Apple once again, lost me as a customer.

Just a note, a company that sells ads for revenue will sell your info when it needs more revenue. If you can't identify the product, chances are the product is you or your information. No to Facebook.

Unfortunately, with my group of friends and family, facebook is pretty much the only way we can organize anything more complicated than a trip to the movies. That and being able to share photos. Those are two things facebook is very good at and that is why I still have mine. I probably won't use it as a baked in feature, but I'm cool with them adding it to the next iOS. It's an option and there are millions of facebook users with iPhones. I wish I didn't have to re-visit my privacy settings and block apps constantly, but until the next thing comes along, facebook is the best/easiest way to keep up with the people in my life who I care about. Also I never really used twitter until it became an iOS feature, and now I kind of like it. I don't use it much but I understand it now and I know what it's good for. I used to be pretty clueless regarding why anyone used it at all, but not now.

We are a small minority on this site, Apple is looking at a much broader picture than the nerds on MR.

They would never REQUIRE you to have a facebook account to use iOS/OSX. You're looking too much in to it. It's just a feature.

Right now you can use iPhoto on OSX to upload directly to facebook.... you don't NEED facebook to use iPhoto, right?

It's just a feature that we will be able to use or not use as we please. iOS offers us much more control now than it used to (example: location services) and they wouldn't force anyone to sign up for facebook all of the sudden.

Facebook is an integral part of society now and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.

As long as your definition of "foreseeable" is +/- 3 years.

It's a toy. Someday someone will come along with a newer and shinier toy and that'll be the end of it.

Nobody is saying you can't [turn it off] but I think that people's problem is more that Apple is cozying up to a company that is much closer to the Dark Side than is frankly comfortable. It took years before people realized it about Google, but it's pretty obvious right away with FB.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/30/technology/facebook-agrees-to-ftc-settlement-on-privacy.html

Accusing Facebook of engaging in “unfair and deceptive” practices, the federal government on Tuesday announced a broad settlement that requires the company to respect the privacy wishes of its users and subjects it to regular privacy audits for the next 20 years.

The commission contended that Facebook, without warning its users or seeking consent, made public information that users had deemed to be private on their Facebook pages.

The order also said that Facebook, which has more than 800 million users worldwide, in some cases had allowed advertisers to glean personally identifiable information when a Facebook user clicked on an advertisement on his or her Facebook page.

And the order said that Facebook had shared user information with outside application developers, contrary to representations made to its users. And even after a Facebook user deleted an account, according to the F.T.C., the company still allowed access to photos and videos.

Wanna borrow one of my tinfoil hats now?

Facebook has proven itself, on repeated counts, to be utterly ruthless when it comes to fleecing its users' privacy for a profit, relying on their ignorance of how new "features" work to keep the advertising cash flow coming in. They only accede to the demand of improved privacy conditions (and the minimum they can get away with) when shamed by public outcry and/or find themselves in legal hot water. I wouldn't put trying to make some sleazy iOS 6 deal with Apple past them.

Wow. That's a step in the wrong direction.

I see why Apple feels like they have to do it (Google has Google+), but facebook is one step away from a hot mess.

I got rid of the facebook app on my (android) phone because I grew tired of getting notifications everytime someone invited me to play farmville, et al.

You know, on iOS, you can turn off notifications individually per app?

I'm quite sure that this integration will be like Twitter: don't want it, don't join up. End of story.

Your quote was one of many many many many story's about Facebooks complete and utter abuse of peoples private information and security.
I already posted about the Ping debacle where Apple dropped them from the planned integration into it due to "onerous terms" Facebook was demanding! That was when it was Steve's Apple of course, the danger now is it's Tim's Apple, lets hope he sees sense?

Probably right, as I really don't see Apple agreeing to something like that.

Still, like I said, I wouldn't put it past Facebook to at least have teased the notion while the iOS 6 dealmaking was going on. It's a no brainer that they'd love to gather at least a trickle of data on over 100 million iPhone users worldwide. And with their IPO falling flat on its face and doubts being raised about their longterm fiscal sustainability, you can bet they're looking for a new revenue stream - datamining iPhone users without their knowledge or consent would be just that.

I'm not trying to stir the pot, but when iOS 5 was announced as having twitter integration, I seem to remember a lot of people wondering why it wasn't facebook. Not that much time has passed and the tide really has seemed to turn against FB.

Hiding such buttons that you describe is what I envisioned in my previous post regarding a checkbox to block Facebook supporting code. I personally don't want to visually clutter my experience with such buttons that I intend never to use. Same goes for Twitter for that matter.
