Apple didn't "disable" (as you put it) FaceTime. The certificate ran out.

This whole thing is blown way out of proportion. Updating to 6.1.6 will fix the issue. Maybe I missing something important. 6.1.6 is still iOS 6 right? Or is it 7 in disguise?

This example doesn't phase me, because that's really how technology works. It appears you are not happy with technology advancing.

If your old tube tv still works, why throw it out? It seems like we upgrade because we can, not because we need to; and this is now what they expect of us.

My aunt is still on iOS 4 on her iPhone 4. It amazes me how people do this.

iOS 4?! Holy cow!

OMG. On ios 4 ??????? NO way. How could someone do this ? How could they still leave the house ? What if someone will see them ? Oh the shame... So antiquated.
Unlike all the ios 7 users.. They have such a strong fashion sense. I bet they all match their shirt with the ios 7 background. That's how you do it. BRAVO ios 7 users BRAVO ! :D

This certificate thing does not hold water. Apple can always reissue the certificate to all these devices. What about devices that aren't able to run iOS 7? Do these devices somehow have unlimited certificates?

This is just Apple want to push user to their latest and greatest iOS. So Apple can proudly announce their OS adoption rate is such such percentage... then laugh at Android

No they actually can't because all those devices aren't even running the latest version of 6. New certificates were deployed for all devices running the latest version of 6 which is 6.1.6. This means that all the iPod Touch 4th gen's out there are using FaceTime without a problem. Everyone else on an iPhone 4, iPad 2, or 5th gen Touch or higher need to upgrade to the latest available version, in this case 7.1.1 to renew their device certificate.

What you are asking is for Apple to update an earlier version of 6 (6.1.5 or earlier) that is not even the latest iteration of that version (6.1.6). Seems unreasonable to me for any company to have to or be expected to expend their resources on forking older versions of old software when those same resources could be utilized for innovation instead...

Brace yourselves....!:D

Did iOS 6 users actually think they could stay on outdated software FOREVER and not have any problems?!

iOS 7 has only been out for 8 months... it's not like iOS6 is a 3-year-old operating system. A lot of people never update their devices, I just had this discussion with my sister-in-law, she has an iPhone5 with iOS6, but not enough free space to update to iOS7 unless she deletes a bunch of videos on her phone (she's not tech savvy enough to upload everything to youtube or something).

I loved iOS 7 as soon as I saw it, so always found it difficult to empathize with those who hate it. I now find the previous icons almost painful to behold. When they pop up in TV shows, they make the whole show feel outdated. That old FaceTime icon for example is monstrous.

You're seriously in love with the awful iOS 7 Notes app ?

If your old tube tv still works, why throw it out? It seems like we upgrade because we can, not because we need to; and this is now what they expect of us.

You must be the guy that stormed Congress because public TV went digital and you couldn't use your old rabbit ears anymore.

I know several who legitimately just dislike iOS 7 and have not upgraded. They genuinely don't like the stylized bright white on top of more white look and on top of that they don't want the lag that has come that they've gotten to experience first hand with others of our friends who have updated (iOS 4, 4S, and 5 even).

Same with me. I actually gave it another shot two weeks back, after carefully saving the SHSH blobs off my iPhone 4. I have to admit that it is not as terrible as it was when iOS 7 was released, but almost all the apps I use are still noticeably slower to me. I like the flow the OS has now and I can fully understand why people would never want to go back, but the performance issues on older devices as well as a design direction that I will simply never like, have made me restore back to iOS 6 yesterday. iOS does not offer me anymore what I appreciated for five years, so I’ve moved on. I wished I could still like my iPhone like I did since the 3G, but Apple simply lost me because of this.

Apple used to have an attitude that allowed people to stay on every desktop OS version they liked. They are doing the opposite now, for better or worse.

They did in 6.1.6. Did anyone actually read the article?

"If you're using iOS 7.0.4 or later or iOS 6.1.6, this issue doesn't affect you. "

Explain how a normal user would go about upgrading their 6.1.5 device to 6.1.6 on an iPhone5?

If your old tube tv still works, why throw it out? It seems like we upgrade because we can, not because we need to; and this is now what they expect of us.

Bad example. In order to upgrade your TV you have to spend hard earned money, or not so hard earned, depending on your situation. This issue has a simple and absolutely free solution, with no cost to the user at all.

Can't create free software that's actually good enough to compel people to voluntarily upgrade to? Solution: Break the version they stayed with.

A big F U right from Apple's own mouth. When was the last time that Apple so directly disrespected its customers? I'm struggling to recall their service ever being so poor. Just offer the fix you created to iOS 6!

How soon they forget...

It's just Tim's management style.

"If you only want me to make things, make decisions that have a clear ROI, then you should get out of the stock," was told to a share holder.

Just revise it a little and you have...

'"If you only want me to make FaceTime work in iOS 6, make you happy to continue running an older version of iOS, then you should get out of iPhone,"

When did Facetime support 3gs(officially)?

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

Emmmmm.......

FaceTime for iOS 6 is only supported on the iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 6.1.6.
No version of FaceTime (video or audio) has ever been supported by the iPhone 3GS.

I'm loving this thread. I can just picture thousands of neckbeards complaining about being "forced" to upgrade.

Guess what, there are MILLIONS of Android users that will NEVER get the chance to upgrade their OS. Millions of devices abandoned at Android 1.x and 2.x.

At least Apple provides updates.

If you want things to work, then update your device and quit your whining.

Or you could delete a few apps that don't store pictures or video and reinstall them after the update completed...

Independent if it's good or bad that FT got killed for these 'lazy' and 'stubborn' iOS6 users, what I find really questionable is why it took Apple more than a week to create clarity around the situation.

Is it really that difficult to be transparent whenever a core service no longer works?

7.1 is running beautifully on my 4S.

How? My girlfriend has gone through at least 2 4s's and numerous DFU restores trying to find a way to get iOS 7 to run well. She's still having issues with basic features like the email client "forgetting" her accounts, and the settings app crashing.

They developed iOS 6.1.6... They just need spent little time to make sure these update works well for devices runs iOS 6. Come on, Microsoft choose to support their Windows XP for more than 13 years. Why can't Apple support their old OS little bit longer?

It seems unreasonable to me for any company to ask their customer either upgrade or not using certain features. They paid their earning to Apple for their devices, now they need forced to upgrade just because Apple doesn't want maintain their older OS? Apple can stop supporting their old OS, it is their right. But it is not right to have certain feature of their old OS just not working all the sudden without forcing user to upgrade.
