I think many are being slightly unfair, blaming Apple —*as a whole company, identity, and brand — for a mistake that is likely to have been caused by one person's neglect.

I think it's quite a bad bug —*but that's all it is. A bug. It has nothing to do with what Apple's priorities are, how good they are at UI/UX design, or how well-made the products are. Software bugs are a thing, and software engineering is a full-fledged field that has some ways of avoiding such bugs.

But it's not going to be perfect every time.

They reacted the best way they could've possibly reacted: pulling the update, and probably starting to work on a patched version of the release.

People really, really like to complain (in general). We find it way easier to bitch at the world and everything else around us, claiming some entitlement to perfection.

While the complaints are well-justified in this case, I don't think it's constructive to go down the "Apple is doomed" route.

I am so glad I didn't notice that the update was out. I think from now on I will wait a few days after apple releases updates. Lately there track record hasn't been all that great.

This changed my future updating habits forever too. After this, there's no way I'm updating on day one

Yes and so is this because at the end of the day the buck stops with the CEO. But Tim was not the person leading iOS 6 and maps project, Forstall was. It's not like iOS was flawless under his leadership. In many ways it's because of Jobs and Forstall that Apple is now playing catch up with iOS. Though I suppose the Jobs sycophants would argue iOS was always superior and didn't need things like extensibility and 3rd party keyboards.

You do realize Android has been doing the same exact catching up in ways too? Desperately trying to fix system performance ala Project Butter to have a fluid smooth OS like iOS, Android L has a lot of "iOS features" that been in iOS for a while, your point is totally moot

Waiting for the ipsw to download.....did an online support chat with apple and they had no idea what was going on. Told me to setup a genius bar appointment.

Looks like those long lines will be forming again outside of Apple Stores.

Dang, McPc beat me too it.

Well so far I have used App Zapper to get rid of iTunes 12, I have installed iTunes 12, and now I back to installing iOS8 and in the mean time I lost lecture notes from a call early this morning because of the damn restore I did.

Edit... iTunes 11 will not work so I have a brick

Anyone know how to update from iTunes 12?

Why is it whenever there's a scandal they just add gate to it? What's the significance of gate? I don't get it

I believe this all started with Nixon's Watergate scandal. Now anything that's a controversy or conspiracy just gets -gate added to it to denote a scandal.

At least that's how I've always understood it. lol

Excited... Like with torches and pitchforks!!!

Seriously kids, there's a reason it's called the "bleeding edge" when you camp on rumor sites and download new patches within minutes of them going live. I'm waiting another week or so for my iOS 8 update while all you lab rats get eaten!!! If you wait just a little bit, then the App makers can get their stuff together and it goes back to being easy.
Umm... No...

The phone informs people there are updates.
Since Apple provides them, people install them no questions asked.

Looks like some basic verification testing was not performed.

If you are calling these things bricks, then you are wrong. More like pieces of cardboard. Bricks don't bend, are heavy, and can build buildings. Just sayin.

Here's a link to a step by step process for rolling back from 8 to 7 via IPSW...the process is the same just use your new file you've got (if its the right one for the phone you have):

http://www.iphonehacks.com/2014/09/downgrade-ios-8-ios-7-1-2.html

the key in the previous post was that no restore is required. Thats key for me as my imac that i have backups on is at home. If i could reload ios8.0.1 here without needing a restore, that would be ideal. some people have metioned they did this without needing a restore.

Except they’re playing catchup in completely different areas. Both points are perfectly valid.

Exactly. I think people forgot about some bad updates in the past. 10.4.9 (IIRC) had a major bug and had to be pulled. 10.2.8 had a major issue with FireWire HD's, resulting in erasing the HD's automatically. 10.6.3 had the Guest user issue that, upon logging into a guest user account, would erase the main Administrator account. Those were all major bugs that fit the very definition of a showstopper.

This was 2009 and earlier (10.2.8 was in 2003), when Jobs was well and alive, and at the helm.

So, +1. This just happened to be a bug that was in the wrong place and happened to impact 6/6+ users. Sloppy? Yes. Oversight? Yes. Malicious and a sign that Apple is crumbling? No. All companies make mistakes. Granted, this was a major fumble, but not the end of the world.

Normally it takes over a day for the phone to inform the user an update is available.

Regular users aren't affected by this. Just us "enthusiasts" who must have the update NAUGH!!!!.
