I s trying to see if it was one particular type, ie WiFi only or WiFi+LTE, but judging from the comments below, there's no commonality. So I'll wait to update mine... For a change.

I got bit with this bug. I am am stuck in recovery mode. I attempted to update my iPad Pro via iTunes on my PC and it failed. I am now trying on a Mac...hopefully better results but we shall see. This is pretty unacceptable. I love iOS because of how often updates are released but if this happens more often, those frequent updates are useless...

Well, add me to the list. Bricked iPad Pro 9.7. It's showing "connect to iTunes" error then it dumps out when trying to restore at the "updating firmware" step. Tried the update three times. Fails each time.

Mine caught the error (53) and I'm currently chatting with Apple Support.

I just tried to update to 9.3.2 and I do get error 56. Very frustrating. Just after finished to verify the update and once it starts to update the firmware (9.7 iPad Pro 128 wi-fi)

I received this error, and i'm fairly certain there are more than "5 people" getting this error, so I do think it's a valid article.

iPad Pro 9.7"

- First update was via OTA. When I looked after lunch it had the connect to iTunes screen.
- I then tried iTunes 12.4 on 10.11.5 and received Error 56.
- I tried ipsw of 9.3.1 and still receive error 56.

Yep bricked my iPad...

Add me to the list, error 56, iPad Pro 9.7 128GB. Have the error since the last beta and reported it to Apple. I'm still waiting for UPS to pick it up.

Maybe now I should wait if there is a chance that the device doesn't need to be replaced.

In the iTunes update log it stops while writing the firmware part.

Are the bricked ones only 128GB?

Mine has the same error 56, iPad Pro 9.7 128GB :( :( :( :(.
Apple is closed in my country. Any solution yet?

Yep that could be the case I have a 128GB one and it is Bricked not possible to restore

Negative...my 9.7" Pro 256gb SG bricked. Chatted with Apple Support for 2 hours and now have an appointment tomorrow to get it swapped

No my iPad Pro 9.7" wifi+cellular is a boat anchor. I have a Genius Bar appt. Wednesday. If they cannot fix it I'll demand an in store replacement on the spot.

Mine got bricked. I initiated the update same as any other, over wi-fi, not plugged into iTunes. Got the message to plug in which was odd, "what if I didn't have iTunes?" I asked. Tried to install update there, then tried to restore. Then made an appointment at my Apple Store (two days cause you can't get same day appointments anymore, Apple is too popular now), then cleaned up and drove over. Waited 2 hours cause no appt, Genius tells me "It's not the download, it's the way things move around during the update, sometimes a file gets misplaced and this happens... but I haven't seen an iPad Pro 9.7 in here for repairs before." He couldn't get the update or restore to stick, "We're gonna have to order a new one since we don't have any in stock. Should be 3-5 days. You'll have to come back and make the exchange at that time."
You want to support Apple still?

This is just so special... I can't tell you how I'm so enamored with the Apple ecosystem lately.

Take for example, the iOS iBooks app. After buying a new iPad Air 2, I spent awhile 'moving in', and it's been anything but 'nice'.

The iBooks app. I figured that I'd use the app to install the books on my new toy. Ahh, but some books weren't listed under 'All Books'. Hmm... I started downloading some, and get about two or three downloaded, and the thing gets doggy. Seizes, won't scroll. Some books don't load, I have to stop the app, and restart it, and then get a few downloaded, and seizing again. Some downloads seize, and then, after restarting the app, show that they never downloaded, in spite showing progress before the seize. I wasted several hours on that hot mess of bullcrap. The iPad even crashed once or twice in the process. Most discouraging...

I know it's whining, but it seems, at least to me, that the 'ecosystem' worked better in the past. Things were simpler then too. iTunes handled *everything*, and it was all done through the same user interface, and now it's just schizophrenic, unstable, and a waste of time.

And with so much that just doesn't work, still, it's hard to feel all 'I LOVE APPLE!!!' anymore. I find myself understanding my mother-in-law's difficulties and frustrations with the issues she has encountered.

It's time for a shakeup at Apple. The iPhone is a lethargic mess of 'features', stuck on a seemingly endless yearly release schedule. The iPad is hampered by spotty software glitches and a variety of other issues. The desktop space is being quietly dismissed, and the notebook lines are seemingly being lobotomized and becoming nothing more than tablets with keyboards.

Maybe Apple evangelism is wearing off, or not as seductive as it once was, and therefore less able to cover over the flaws, or there ARE more flaws, and Apple really is listlessly drifting in a sea of 'meh'...

I'm sitting out these updates, for EVERYTHING, until the now infamous x.x.+1 update(s) come out to fix the poop they should have fixed in the update to fix the poop that they were trying to fix from the previous update. (Funny that I can see Steve Jobs yelling this at the top of his lungs at a company wide meeting, before some scalps are rendered)

I'm discouraged, and I don't like feeling this way...

Thanks to all the martyrs. I am not updating any of my devices to this iOS version until there is an updated version.

Like Windows now. Wait for the first, or second service pack. Oh, and hope that old bugs, and lethal new ones, aren't created...

You don't know how software development works, and that's fine, but please stop being an armchair manager because it makes you look silly.

It's entirely likely something broke between the final beta and public release.

Edit: I'll also note my 9.7" iPad Pro is doing fine following an OTA update from 9.3.1.

It is, and always will be so that nothing tests a product like releasing it to the public.

Someone, somewhere, will do something that wasn't anticipated, and *BOOM* a new bug is identified.

However 'bricking' a new product? I seem to remember the new 6s iPhones being tripped up with an update early on. That is sloppy. You test on ALL of the new devices, and then on the newer ones. Having a new release of software hammering your newest product is more than embarrassing. Or should be...

Question, based on the fixes listed on the the MR Frontpage, which ones do you need? Personally speaking, as I look at them, there is nothing that relates to how I use my iPad. They do not provide a security warning, so if there is nothing that benefits a user, why would they waste time updating to such a niche a x.x.$ update?
People are moaning about some implied slippage of Apple QA. The fact that my iPad/iPhone/Watch works as well as they do with no crashes or hiccups indicates otherwise to me.

You dont see this article as a service to iPad Pro users? Considering there seem to be quite a few people in this thread alone who have bricked their devices, I think this article could save many others the temporary grief of being without their devices while Apple fixes this. Even if it ends up only 0.1% of users are effected, why would you care if MR report it based on speculation and *gasp* rumour?

Or are you referring to other posts on MR? No one has suggested this place is some journalistic highground, but some just cant seem to accept that Apple can make errors and get their panties in a twist when it happens.

Sure there's a service. Otherwise I voiced an opinion on the writing style of this particular author. That's all.

My launch day iPad Pro 9.7 (Space Gray, 128GB, WiFi) was bricked during the 9.3.2 Beta. I believe it was going from beta 2 to beta 3 when it occurred.

Apple swapped out my iPad (Best Buy was useless even though was less than 30 days old). I then upgraded to 9.3.2 final release with no issues.

9.7 iPad Pro 32GB WiFi only. Updated with no problems. I read all this, figured I have AC+ so, why not?

Add me to the bricked list; iPad Pro 9-7" 256GB and error 56, updated with iTunes and cable (successfully updated iPhone 6 earlier). Got Genius Bar appt to check hardware.

[Update]
iPad replaced. Upgraded the new one with no issues. Must have been a hardware issue (apparently).

I have an iPad Pro 9.7 128Gb with AT&T WiFi - Mine was bricked. Apple just replaced it in the store.
[doublepost=1463504953][/doublepost]My iPad Pro 9.7 128Gb with AT&T WiFi was bricked. Apple just replaced it in the store. At first they did not want to do it because they had no "service models" that could replace it, and it would be days. I objected and they did an in store return with a new one out of the box (they kept the box) as if I just brought it in, which oddly enough, I did.

Back in the good old days I would be updating my apple devices the same day the updates came out because they were usually rock solid. Now I find myself waiting weeks before I jump in, to avoid exactly this kind of problem.

I was just wondering about this. I have an iPad Pro 9.7, my first Apple device ever, using it in Japan. When connected to a third-party bluetooth keyboard (Logitech / (LogiCool) K380) with a Japanese layout, there is no layout option! (Settings - General - Keyboards) I'm stuck using the default US layout whereas many of the symbols "@, +, ;, *, etc.) are mapped to different keys. I can change to the Japanese IME, but the keyboard settings remain unchanged. It seems the setting got lost in 9.3.2. So, I've been waiting for weeks to be able to use the keyboard.

And now the update downloaded and waiting on my iPad Pro is potentially going to brick my device?! This Apple experience is not starting off very well . . .

So, to my question, if I just wait, will the downloaded update be replaced when the fix is put out? And will I be notified somehow? From what I remember, when the 9.3.2 or 9.3.1 update was causing problems with some devices, Apple fixed it pretty quickly but did not change the update numbering. So, how could you even tell which update you had waiting to install?

Apple has in the past made their own updates more stable within a week or less if something did go wrong like what's happening now. You would definitely get the better update and they usually remove the one not installed if you didn't start installation.

I remember the days when everyone would update day 1 since iOS was so amazing and stable. Apple really needs to maybe start just updating their devices twice a year. That way, they have time to truly work out the kinks. I don't need an update every 2 months. I just prefer a couple major updates a year.

I have the larger iPad Pro and I refuse to update it until another week or two, thank goodness the large pro users do not have that many issues with the update or the springboard crashes or the safari tab issues like the smaller pro owners. It seems like the smaller pro owners are going through everything that was theorized before its release.

Senior Software Engineer to Business/Finance Managers: "Provide me with the time and resources and I can test this till it is absolutely bug free. You have to decide to what point I test."

If you want your release to be bug free, then you'll never get a release. That being said, this type of thing makes me cringe. This should have been caught by somebody. Didn't anyone with the new Pro test this?

So do I upgrade or not?

The iPhone SE went through wth no issues....

I would wait a week or two. There doesn't seem to be anything major with this update anyway, which makes it confusing that it has this big of a bug. Wonder if they fixed a bug that was covering up a different bug that's doing this.
