My guess is that they'll re-release the update after they figure out what's causing the problem. It might take a week or two, I would think.

I sure hope so.. I tried send a DM to their Twitter support and ask if they're aware of the issue(which I think they are but just to confirm). I can't belive they're not pulling it yet..

Google release vanilla android, it's then up to the manufacturers to make it work on their devices.
True, but it gets tested on multiple devices, old, new, and upcoming. They also release compatibility notes.

Whichever way you slice it, Apple has always prided itself of its closed ecosystem (Hardware + software + service), keeping it small and restricted to maintain quality, which seems to have gone downhill.

Now, that's the thing that's troubling. Even if they're not sure it's a big issue, it'd be better for them to just remove it to be safe.

The update also didn't appear to fix the springboard crashes 9.7 Pro users are having when switching apps. Apple needs to get their QA in order.

Senior Software Engineer to Business/Finance Managers: "Provide me with the time and resources and I can test this till it is absolutely bug free. You have to decide to what point I test."

Being a Software Developer & Engineer myself, I absolutely agree. My code is tested by me thoroughly, but I am limited on how many different scenarios and conditions within these scenarios that I can test for. That is where Quality Assurance comes into play. The QA department further tests my code by purposely trying to break "it." It is up to those above my paygrade to determine how much resources, time, and money can be devoted to the testing of my code. If there is 1 or 2 people devoted to testing, the chances of not discovering something wrong with my code, if there was something I missed, is high.

Apple must devote more resources, time, and money to their Quality Assurance department to ensure accurate and thorough testing.

I doubt you're going to get a springboard fix in a bug fix release. I would think iOS 10 earliest.

If you want your release to be bug free, then you'll never get a release. That being said, this type of thing makes me cringe. This should have been caught by somebody. Didn't anyone with the new Pro test this?

I would wait a week or two. There doesn't seem to be anything major with this update anyway, which makes it confusing that it has this big of a bug. Wonder if they fixed a bug that was covering up a different bug that's doing this.

What's even more odd is that it affects some but not all 9.7" iPad Pros. I have the 128GB LTE version and am affected. Perhaps there is an incompatibility with a specific chip from a supplier (eg if Apple is sourcing a chip from two different suppliers). Apple said the only fix is a replacement, which is now on order. Perhaps a fix will arrive between now and then.

I can't wait till WWDC 2016.

Big smiles up on stage,
Promoting the new iOS features,
Everyone staring forward politely with a small grimace on their face... knowing full well the hell that's going to be coming down the pipe...

Not lately, QA has taken a drop recently. The springboard crash looks like it's being caused by a lack of memory for vm pagefiles, which probably means someone forgot the 9.7 has half of the ram of the full size Pro. It acts like an issue managing memory when switching apps and there might be a bug in the memory handling code that is firing off a jetsam and causing the springboard crash. It's a minor complaint when compared to a complete device brick though. Fortunately my 9.7 was able to upgrade without becoming a paperweight.

Yes indeed.

The best way to assure ones device isn't negatively impacted by Apple's questionable work is to wait, watch as others report the inevitable problems, then wait for Apple to fix them.

By getting into acceptance and adapting to the way Apple operates, its easier than taking the risk and losing time and money.

It's 2020 and Apple just released the latest iOS update. Millions of Apple users are waiting patiently to see who will go first. After the first 24 hours, the adoption rate of this latest update sits just under 1%. We will post updates as they come.

Mine got bricked. I initiated the update same as any other, over wi-fi, not plugged into iTunes. Got the message to plug in which was odd, "what if I didn't have iTunes?" I asked. Tried to install update there, then tried to restore. Then made an appointment at my Apple Store (two days cause you can't get same day appointments anymore, Apple is too popular now), then cleaned up and drove over. Waited 2 hours cause no appt, Genius tells me "It's not the download, it's the way things move around during the update, sometimes a file gets misplaced and this happens... but I haven't seen an iPad Pro 9.7 in here for repairs before." He couldn't get the update or restore to stick, "We're gonna have to order a new one since we don't have any in stock. Should be 3-5 days. You'll have to come back and make the exchange at that time."
Wow you make this up? Misplaced file huh?

There were a slew of security fixes. Including a SIRI lock screen bypass one. Perhaps one of those fixes broke something else. But certainly more to this update than just the few items mentioned in changelog.

I just updated my iPad Pro 9.7 without any issues...of course I did it through iTunes just to be sure.
Why wouldn't they at least put a popup warning about the iPP 9.7,

If not outright pulling the update by now???

iPad Pro 9.7" 128GB Slate Grey Wifi+Cellular REPLACED

My iPad Pro which was bricked with error code 56 has been replaced by Apple retail today. I don't know what version of iOS is on it yet, but rest assured I won't try this update again.

I'm curious to know if people with the iPad Pro 9.7" 128gb wifi+cellular models saw it get bricked when upgrading with iTunes...anyone have that happen? Mine was bricked using the OTA update.

They were able to re-create the error code 56 in the store.

My 128Gb iPad Pro 9.7 WiFi did not brick.

How did you do the update? Other the Air (OTA) or via iTunes?

On hold with a senior advisor in Apple customer relations who is trying to arrange for me to get an in-store replacement after having gone through two senior advisors in tech support as well as a lower tier customer relations advisor explaining that my iPad Pro 9.7 256GB Rosegold unit got transformed into a brick by mistakenly trusting Apple by attempting to do the the dreaded OTA update to ios 9.3.2. I can't believe the hoops I'm having to go through to get an expedient replacement of a device that Apple broke, even though I have Apple Care + . So far they said I can't just go into a store and get it exchanged even if they have it in stock unless said stock is designated as replacement inventory. Just hung up with her, and the best she could work out with store management was for them to order a warranty replacement to be sent to the store and for me to be able to go in without an appointment and do the exchange. While I'm grateful for what she was able to do, I am extremely disappointed that the current processes in place do not serve to appease Apple's most loyal and sophisticated users. So now I must be without my iPad Pro for at least two or three days as well as having spent a good portion of my day off fighting with Apple to do the right thing. Very dismayed to say the least!

They have :
IPod touch
Ipad
iPhone

But then
They have to make it stable for :
iPad 2 wifi only and 3G CDMA/GDM
IPAD 3 wifi only and 4G CDMA/GSM
iPad 4 wifi only and 4G CDMA/GSM
iPad Air wifi only and 4G CDMA/GSM
iPad Air 2 wifi only and 4G CDMA/GSM
iPad mini wifi only and 4G CDMA/GSM
iPad mini 2 wifi only and 4G CDMA/GSM
iPad mini 3 wifi only and 4G CDMA/GSM
iPad mini 4 wifi only and 4G CDMA/GSM
iPad Pro 12.9" wifi only and 4G CDMA/GSM
iPad Pro 9.7" wifi only and 4G CDMA/GSM

iPhone SE
iPhone 6s
iPhone 6s Plus
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
iPhone 5s
iPhone 5c
iPhone 5
iPhone 4s

iPod touch 5
iPod touch 6

So as you can see realistically they have to do testing for much more than 3 iOS devices looking at that list a bug is going to slip in somewhere no matter if the hardware is new or old

Should I fill maybe 10 pages of of configurations Microsoft has make Windows compatible with? Why is it that when its Microsoft they just write crappy software?
