Um, guys...

I went to go to the update after trying for like 15 minutes, and when it finally connected it told me a new version was available -3.0.

What?

Someone at Apple is having fun with a light switch. The server is offline once again!

To fuel the flame, I noticed a bunch of app updates last night and a few today. Many of them stated updated for 4.2. Kinda of like last week before they pulled the kill switch on 4.2 release on Friday.

What about Apple TV? Airplay is useless without video reception on Apple TV

Not for music.

Anyway, works fine for me: 4.1 is latest. But what I find more curious than app updates yesterday, is how this coincides with the availability of 3rd party products to allow AirPrint to work with any printer shared by a Mac. Why would you release those with 7-day free demos A WEEK before AirPrint is supposedly available. The demo would be all but worthless for anyone who started it today because, How would you test it without iOS 4.2?

Every time I click Check for Update, it keeps coming back with "The iPhone software update server could not be contacted".

Hurry! Everyone keep clicking - maybe we can get this "iOS 4.2 imminent" thing figured out. ;)

The error message had been showing up in UK iTunes but it's gone back to normal reporting 4.1 as the current version

You have 4.1? Mine claims 4.0 latest. Are you saying you can stream video?

Music is OK, but then it's only AirTunes

It seems unlikely to me that a third party vendor would have any knowledge of when 4.2 would arrive (other than speculation and rumor). To my knowledge, Apple rarely, if ever, shares specific release date information with third parties.

Overheard...

"Steve, you can't just "un-friend" ALL of North Carolina just because they announced a $500M data center for Facebook! Look what they just did to us! That's where we're basing our 4.2 downloads from!!!"

;)

iOS 4.1 or Apple TV software 4.1? I was referring to iOS 4.1, although I wasn't clear about that. I don't have an Apple TV. Well, not a new one. I'm waiting for iOS 4.2 to get one because my primary interest is streaming music from my iPhone and iPad to my stereo via AirPlay and an Apple TV. Which is of course why I mentioned music streaming, though I know a lot of people are more interested in video.

No..keeping clicking on update...and nothing...

If it were a tick, it would have been *Tick* nope...*Tick* nope...then possibly some profanity like Turrets.

It's actually tic, not ticK. Anyways, save your time, stop clicking useless buttons :)

I worked for Giant Developer X on Product Z and we were kept up by Apple on intended final release dates for prototype hardware and alpha/beta/RC/GM OS updates. But that was a long time ago and we were Giant Developer -- although a fix for a pulled AirPrint feature people wanted might make these two devs special to Apple in this case. But I don't know they share that information today. I do know they tend more to share things if they're already announced. Prior to announcement, they tell no one much, not even their own retail stores, not that the stuff even exists.

This same thing happened late last night and I was about to post to MacRumors and then I tried again and the software update server was back up and running again minutes later. It seems they are having some issues. It's up in the air as to whether or not this is a sign of an imminent iOS 4.2 release. Last night I took it as a false alarm and went to bed.
