Opinions??? Dude, the physical damage does not lie....It is crystal clear that the damage was caused by an impact. Where you are going to lose your claim is that little white spot of crushed glass at the point of impact....

I understand that the guy is upset, he accidentally smashed his iPad and he's come up with the bullshiit story and has all these people buying his story and offering to help him out. Bottom line, there's no way in hell that his iPad spontaneously shattered from an obvious impact point. He knows it didn't happen that way but I guess he feels if he gets enough people to fall for his fantasy, it will somehow bolster his case. I really hope Apple doesn't replace it for free. I've heard many stories of people breaking their iPads or iPhones shortly after getting them, but instead of coming up with a bullshiit story, they just tell the truth to the Apple store and sometimes get lucky with a sympathetic employee.

Well I suppose it's a good thing you cynics won't be reviewing his claim. Sometimes parts go bad. I've seen ram modules with exploded chips that started a small smoldering fire and the first "genius" said it was water damage. We called it in and explained this happened while his daughter had it on her lap. They sent a box and repaired it immediately. There is no way to definitively call this user damage from a picture on the Internet. Sometimes things just break.

Besides he's a Canadian. They're all polite and can't lie... Can they?

Cheers,

Not being a cynic....The proof is right before your eyes. There is physical damage on the edge just next to where the glass was broken. This damage is in the form of a gouge. Then at the point where the glass broke the glass is
actually crushed. Now put these two facts together and that will tell you the proximate cause of this damage. Glass does not just spontaneously crush.....I could possibly believe his story if there were just cracks in the glass with no gouge on the edge and crushed glass. There is really no disputing the physical evidence....It is what it is, really not much to dispute in this matter.

Literally, I'm holding the iPad 2 in Portrait mode... playing Angry Birds. When the glass cracked...

Sorry but your whole story falls apart right there. No one outside of a mental facility plays angry birds in portrait. ;)

My iphone4 got a crack that looked almost exactly the same, spread out from a single point and shatters like that.

It fell from the car door to the ground, less than 2 feet, hit the pavement that had rock, and the screen would cost more to replace than to get a new phone.

it was upsetting, but I shouldnt have let it drop. it was an accident and I had no idea that it would fall out when i opened the door, but it did.

i cant say what happened to your ipad, and well at this point it probably doesnt matter , but if I was an apple employee, I would assume it was dropped.
I hope you can get a new one soon and find a good case to cover the sides and top ( a screen protector would add strength to a new one too). unfortunately the glass and aluminum are not terribly sturdy, and can crack when dinged or dropped pretty easy.
Best of luck.

That has clearly been dropped. Buy a protector next time or simply hold with both hands. In the future, if you see anything hard, rough and grey under your feet, hold onto the ipad. Do not let go.

You guys claiming that, "it has clearly been dropped," probably have issues. Why would someone come onto a forum and tell random strangers lies?

This was my concern with the iPad 2, the build quality feel less sturdy than the original.

Spot on diagnosis. Crushed glass in a specific spot indicates impact damage, before you even consider the nick on the edge. A sudden glass failure would not be as concentrated in one spot. I've been working with mobile phones for 17 years and have seen this damage often on hard impacted LCD's. Hell I've even done it myself with old phones for fun!

Awwwww, how sweet (and deluded) :D

It bugs me that so many people think the OP is lying! He's Canadian, they can't lie :D and honestly I believe that pressure could break the screen, because my screen keeps clicking in on one side and popping out on the other. Mine also came with a dent in it. It only occurred to me recently to replace the thing. (I have an appointment next week)

Those pictures make me cringe.... Poor iPad :(

I think it's a stretch to question the OP's telling of the events. It is certainly possible to reconcile his reported facts of the case without invoking magic or deceptive intent.

Likely, there was a small event which initially went unnoticed. Perhaps it was a small assembly problem or defect. Perhaps the OP inadvertently bumped it against something days earlier without noticing or remembering. The crack may have then propagated quickly while the OP was using it.

It'll be up to the Apple Store to figure out to their satisfaction what happened. Perhaps they'll find something that could indicate a manufacturing problem with this particular unit or find some evidence that it was user-caused. In either case, the OP can accept or contest Apple's decision through the courts if he so desires.

Calling the OP a liar seems to be assuming more than is necessary.

Well said.
Most sensible post in this thread so far.

Similar situation

I'm going through a similar situation. I've been using my iPad 2 for the past 2 weeks. I treat it like gold, have a smart cover, Geco grip strips on the back to prevent it from slipping out of my hands and put it in a padded sleeve when in transport.
I usually charge it every night and I'm assuming that when I placed it down on my desk for overnight charging, I may have placed it down a little too hard and the next morning noticed a shattered corner (bottom corner, to the right of the home button). I didn't drop it in any way, and the only thing I can think happened is that when I placed it down on the desk, it hit that "sweet spot" that I've been reading on other forums. It literally had a shatter that emanated right from the corner. Zero damage to the aluminum body.
Fortunately, I live just north of Toronto and brought it in to my closest Apple store. My Genius appointment ran smooth and explained to the Apple rep exactly the steps that I think brought me to this point. He looked up my serial number and could see it was practically brand new, I showed him all my protection steps. He didn't even have to speak to a manager, just punched in some numbers and said they will replace the entire iPad...I will have to wait for about a week for the new shipment to come in, but the replacement has gone through. No questions, no arguing.

Wow... So because you cant place an item on a desk properly you take an iPad that someone else could have after already waiting so long.

Disgraceful

I has something similar happen to the glass top of my stove. There was a defect in the glass that was hidden by the stove frame and one night while we were cooking the entire top cracked. It was covered by warranty. I hope you are as lucky
