theres no easy way round that one i think.

you'll have to sign up for one of those US credit card accounts. never used one myself so can't recommend any.

I think you can only buy from the US Store if you have a credit card with a US address linked to it. Or you can buy through bundlebox I think.

Import duty, VAT and handling charges.

Import duty varies.
VAT is 20% of the value
Parcelforce/Royal mail handling charges are £13.50
Other couriers range from £7.50 to £15.

So if it is declared to be worth £500 you will pay £100 VAT, probably £23 duty, probably £13.50 handling, £136.50 total.

Also.... Monday? I import from the US regularly using various couriers and I've never had anything arrive that quick. Customs will also likely hold it for 24-48 hours.

Edit: Sorry ipad is duty free, you will still be hit with VAT and handling though if customs "pick it up".

Is anyone in two minds as to whether to get the WIFI or the 3G version using O2? The way I see it, you can still have 3G on a wifi model if you use the new personal hotspot feature on an iPhone 4? Is that right?

The way I've worked the costs out...

Buy an iPad 2 3G version: £100 (extra)
£10/month tariff on O2 for 1GB: £120 a year
= £220 spent in total

Buy an iPad 2 WIFI version: save £100
£7.50/month tethering bolt on with O2 for 500mb: £90 a year
= £90 spent

Would the above be correct or am I missing anything?

(obviously there's the simplicity and convenience of having 3G built in + having the GPS functionality)

You'll get less battery life on your phone doing that but your logic makes perfect sense to me. I get free tethering from 3 so it's a no brainer. Wouldn't use the 3G functionality of an iPad enough to warrant paying the extra.

I'm heading to the US at the end of May so I'm just going to wait until then to buy one, it's only a 2 month wait and I will be saving over £100.

The 3G version does is include GPS as well so you are missing out on that if you go wifi only.

starting to wonder if the longer lines and supposedly higher than expected demand will mean a delay for us non-US customers.

i think its likely :(

Got my ipad 2 16gb ordered :D

Ideally would of liked 32gb, but i realised it was quite unecessary. I bought it off a ebay seller in the US, it wasn't the cheapest and after tax will cost me about £40 than it would of here. But he is a fantastic seller, he has answered all my questions and has been very helpful, has made me very confident in my purchase. He's pretty sure i'll get it by the 19th March too, which would be very nice indeed

This obsession of having to be the first kid to have the latest toy just doesn't make sense.
Fair enough if you were to save money over what you would pay in the UK or there was say a month wait between the time of receiving an ipad2 from the US to the release date in the UK.

But because you're too impatient to wait another 6 days you'd rather pay £55+ more than what you should pay. Like you said you wanted a 32gb, for another £45 and 6 days you could have got one.

Hope not still got my fingers crossed for a pre order so it's delivered on the 25th. Here's hoping!

I don't see the point in anyone ordering from the US.. It probably wont arrive until near abouts when the UK iPad launches away.

Just have some patience, sheesh.

USPS Express can take 2 days.

It's cheaper.

It's slightly quicker.

Why not do it if you can? [I would only recommend it if you have Applecare!]

Hmm... does kind of look like history repeating itself. Although if they were planning on a release in so many more places on 25th March, couldn't they just delay the others and let the UK have ours? And maybe let Canada have a few too.

Wasn't sure if I should wait for the UK release but I have a horrid feeling it will be pushed back so I jumped the gum

Ordered 64gb 3G in white on at&t (for my 3 microsim)
Got it from macmall so no sales tax and free shipping to my viaddress.
Viaddress will let me declare it as a $499 base iPad to sae on VAT.
No duty.
So it'll cost me

$829 -iPad
$38 - shipping from my viaddress in Indiana
Up to £65 (hopefully) in VAT if seen by customs.

= at cheapest $971 or £605
= at full VAT $1,052 or £656

Still cheaper than the uk's £699/£719 (17.5%/20% VAT)

USPS global express guaranteed uses Fed Ex to deliver second business day. So I assume if it was shipped Saturday maybe Monday more likely Tuesday.

This service is cheaper than direct FedEx. I'd avoid UPS like the plague. I ordered a MacBook pro 2 weeks ago from Apple and it's currently im Germany having travelled from China to Anchorage, Alaska to lousiville, kentucy to philadephia before ending up in Germany where is has been sitting for 24 hours when it could be here in 3-4 hours.

I have someone picking me up one today.

I'm nervous because I don't know what time he is going to turn up or how busy the stores will be or even if he will be able to buy one today ... And because he is I'm California I will literally have to stay up all night to find out...

Then of course 5pm is too late to post anything today so it has to go out on Saturday if he gets it... So many questions and I won't know the answers...

normally I wouldn't care about waiting but I sold my iPad 1 last Monday and I'm sick of my iphone already!

should have held onto it. don't have a spare day of annual leave to queue either
