Wow, are some of you people actually thinking of ordering 1 from the US? Cant you just wait another 2 weeks and save all the hassle

Ways To Get iPad 2 From USA

eBay

Take a chance and buy one from eBay. You have paypal protection so if
it doesn't actually get delivered then you can get your money back regardless of if the seller was genuine or not.

If you want to play it safe then wait until people have photos of actual in hand ipad 2 on eBay although that may cost more depending on demand on eBay.

US to UK Import Companies

There are a few companies that can buy an iPad for you from Apple online and will ship it on to you in the UK for approximately a total 12-14% of the price of the ipad. You have to pay for the iPad and shipping to the company in the US and then for shipping to the UK. They may take an additional fee for extra services which may be another 2-4%.

The two companies I know of are: bundlebox.com and hopshopgo.com, Hop Shop Go is partership between PayPal and ComGateway.com and as such is protected like eBay by PayPal protection so if you have any issues you get the money right back. Not that you should - as paypal wouldn't partner with someone they couldn't do reliable business with.

The negative side of this is that Apple cancelled lots of orders being sent to the addresses of these companies when the first iPad came out because they knew they were being shipped internationally before the international release. So you may end up ordering and waiting and not getting an iPad because Apple cancels the order. Again you would get your money back but you will lose time waiting and wondering.

Family & Friends

Obviously if you have family and/or friends in the US you could ask them to buy it for you.

I have plenty of family in the US but I would never imagine they would queue and go and buy an iPad for me anytime soon even if I paid them. I would get it eventually but not before it came out here! and you can't exactly hassle friends and family to hurry up!

Others

Occasionally you may encounter someone who does lots of business in the US who is willing to buy one for you and ship it over... I can't tell you were to find these people or if you can trust them. But if you know anyone like that then maybe you can ask them.

I personally went for this final option and the total cost for me is going to be exactly the same as buying here in the UK in 3 weeks (depending on customs of course).

SHIPPING!

If you want an easy and fast process from the US to your door and you can choose shipping courier I would recommend FedEx. They are very fast. 2 day international delivery from the US (ie, shipped Mon arrives Wed).

FedEx however is quite expensive although in my personal experience better and more reliable than UPS.

FedEx also send you an invoice for customs charges so you do NOT have to pay when the item is delivered.

So can you get FedEx for cheaper? YES

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has a contract with FedEx to deliver Global Express Guaranteed in 2 days to the UK. It is approximately 20% cheaper than direct FedEx and I assume much easier to drop at a post office than FedEx place.

You can track the package using the USPS tracking number and if you enter your USPS tracking number on the FedEx reference tracking site it will show up on FedEx as well. This service will most likely cost you around $100. Yes it is alot but for a fast and efficient customs process it is in my eyes worthit.

If you chose slower shipping then I would suggest that UPS would be better as USPS standard international is delivered by Parcel Force and they want customs money before delivery.

Customs

We have to pay VAT at 20% and if the item is worth over £135 import duty at 12% (I believe that is correct it may be less).

Obviously that means that customs could easily charge you over £200 on a iPad 2 worth £600.

However, Customs will not open your item if it is labelled correctly so you could declare its value as less than the amount for import duty and have a small fee to pay. I am not telling you to do this. Just saying that it is an option. Worst case scenario is that they open the package and charge you the full customs fees but if your selling your old iPad then you should have enough to cover it.

I hope this little guide has been helpful!

Ya tis is helpful!! I'm just wondering anyone hv any succeed experience to declare the less amount for import duty??

is not time problem but the money, i can get 32Gb wifi iPad 2 in US wit the price in UK for 16Gb:(

The way I see it is that you have nothing to lose. It also depends on the seller. If they are willing to declare it for less when they ship it.

If you have the money and can afford the full customs charges then go ahead as maybe you won't get charged the full amount and you saved money and time.

For those wondering: Why buy from US when it is out here in 2 week?

Supply and demand is the simple reason. Who is to say Apple won't change the date again? who is to say Apple will have enough stock in the UK even if they do release it on time?

And who really wants to queue? I don't.

I fancy my chances of getting an iPad 2 from the US before the UK release without having to queue. I can't say for sure that my US buyer will get one in Friday although that is what he said he would do as I can't guess at stock levels and queues and when he would physically get to the place selling the iPads but I am confident that Apple would have more stock before its out here. And worst case scenario they don't and I get a refund and I go queue up in 2 weeks. No harm in this at all... only gain!

Looks like pc world are selling it from the 25th! They got it on there homepage! Which I good because is work about 10 mins walk away :) . Looks like I will be getting one that day

Excellent post! but worth noting that there is no duty for iPads just VAT so the most you could be stung for a full $829 3g 64gb iPad is about £111 plus parcelforce/fedex admin charge.

also it might work out better for people to use a shipping forwarder (I plan to use Viaddress) they can also consolidate multiple items and ship them in one box (if you plan on buying a case ect)

Are you sure on this ? there is a big difference to your £111 and him saying "easily over 200 is possible"

Any micro SIM will work in an iPad. I have a SIM only deal for my iPhone 4 which works in my iPad just fine. I'm sure 3 would transfer your contract to a Micro SIM. If you cut down just be careful you don't end up jamming the cut down SIM in your new iPad 2.

I've bought one of those tools for cutting the SIM down online. So you reckon it'll work absolutely fine then?

Does ordering start at 12:01am pst ?

That would be perfect, thats 8am GMT just before i head off to college. So i order it using VIAddress.com and ship to my US adress, add it to my account, then choose 3 day shipping through fedex which is £25, then when it get's here i'll have about £80 in tax.

Therefor, if i calculate this right...:

$599 for 32Gb Wifi.
$50 in tax roughly.
$40 shipping fee
$130 tax
total = $819

$819 = £505 :D I don't know how quick delivery is in the US, but if i order it 12:01am PST in friday, it should get to my US adress by Tuesday hopefully. It'll get to the UK by Thursday, i'm going to guess 3 days at customs and an extra day to deliver it to my house. So from ordering thats 9days, 20th March i think. That's cool with me.

that's my plan but for the 64gb 3g
plus declaring it as iPad $499 could reduce your tax a little

if you start adding accessories such as cases and docks and take the most expensive ipad then it could get to around £200 BUT I used a WORST CASE maximum figure not the lowest possible figure.

I prefer to work with the maximum amount than the minimum amount when making estimates.

That duty calculator was good I agree!

The mail fowarding services of which I include bundlebox and comgateway.com and hop shop go are only 3 of the services, I know there are others but I don't know there names! however, the problem still exists that unless you have a US credit card (I have heard UK amex cards work but who has those?) then you have to get them to pay for it themselves as your UK card will not work.

Will it not work because Apple refuses the card or the bank refuses the transaction ? If it's the latter i'll just ring the bank beforehand.

Really? It's two weeks.

Thats if they don't delay the launch. And it's cheaper from the US. So why not..

Apple will decline the card as it doesn't have a registered US address - at least that is my understanding. It doesn't matter if you have a postal address through a fowarding company.

Even if it slips through last year Apple were canceling orders to fowarding addresses as they knew they were being sent international.

So if you use a service like that it is anyone's guess if the iPad will ever reach your US address for fowarding.

No harm in trying but I don't fancy your chances! I would personally hit up eBay on Saturday and find someone with photos of their new iPad.

I'm not a fan of the preorders on eBay from people you don't know regardless of their feedback. That's not to say they won't come through and post the iPads but rather your ability to communicate with them may be limited which is why I would wait and buy one when that person has it in hand.

Hmm, yea. I would use there concierge service but have also read some dodgey things about VIAddress.com

The conciege service for viaadress is just like the buy for me services on bundlebox and hop shop go.

Again the problem is so many people will place orders using those services that Apples systems will show up strange activity so they may cancel orders like last year.

Last year it seemed pretty random in that some were being cancelled and some were not. There was no apparent pattern. It just seemed to be down to luck or lack of it!

You may get through, or you may not. I'm still a fan of eBay over those right now. I'm sure that a decent price can be gotten on there after Friday night specially if as certain analysts are saying the demand will be much less this year and there will be more places to buy the iPad.

Yea if someone with very good feedback is offering the iPad 2 32gb WiFi for a decent price i might go for it. Problem is i can't see them charging less than $700 so i could not afford it as well as the shipping fees and tax's, it'd come out at more than the UK price.

In would think the SIM will work. Depends on how well it's cut down though. I would seriously just ask 3 to transfer your contract to a micro SIM. They might even be able to do it in store.

Ive had an ipad and took it back
I was thinking maybe the ipad2 will be better and then the great news ....
They've stuck a couple of cameras on it
I have no use whatsoever for that, so thanks apple i've saved £450

I'll be buying a 16GB wifi (if I can sell my mixer...any pro audio guys?!).
I'm in Leeds so have a KRCS nearby, but am talking with my college/apple about educational deals - does not look good.

Can't wait to get it - I won't be buying a macbook after all! :apple:

A macbook would be a way better bet

I didn't think KRCS had confirmed that they were stocking it on launch day... well, the Coventry store said they didn't have any information about it yet.

Stop trolling. This is a thread about people who want the iPad 2 and live in the UK.

You may live in the UK, but you don't want an iPad 2. Leave us to be happy, please.
