I'm never less than staggered at the amount of people that will spend a fortune on gadgets like this without reading up a tiny bit on what they are for and how they work....
In my defence I have read up on iPad for many months, what it does, etc. and watched countless videos, even ear-marked various apps, and knew what it was going to be. However I still genuinely thought it was self-contained. In fact it
is self-contained, it just requires that one-off, rather odd (it has to be said) authentication from my PC for it to boot up the first time.
I've been using the App Store and iTunes all today via the iPad as a self-contained unit. Not sure why ever it needed my PC to start it up the first time.
Anyway, been using it extensively today and it really is great. Drummed up a number of apps after hooking it up to the 'net over wifi.
Found a few "grrrr, mac-isms" in the GUI compared to Win PC-esque usage, but getting there.
Got an operation and a two-week stay in hospital in May, but this will amazingly allow me to stay working and keep connected at full tilt! It's all good.
After a days' usage the only problem I foresee is that it's an RSI time-bomb for typists. However, found an easier way to type by grabbing it with both hands either side and using the thumbs to type. I'm a touch typist so this works great instead of jabbing monotonously with the index finger. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. It would've been nicer if the rest of the GUI had been designed more ergonomically for this reason, but hey you can't have your cake and eat it.
Otherwise it's a fantastic little machine.

Very empowering.
Just gotta remember to not unconsciously 'flick' dust off the screen as it's touchscreen and can often leave a trail of devastation!
