The iPad is (or at least was) duty free.

Take a look at http://www.dutycalculator.com but remember the cost of the item needs to be the full cost you paid (including US taxes).

Duty for the basic 16gb wifi is about £65 so the total comes out to around £395. You pay tax twice this way as it's paid on the item in the US and again when it gets to the UK (VAT).

You'll also probably get stung by your courier in the UK for a handling fee if they have to process it through customs. This can add another £10 or £20 to the price.

I got my original iPad from the US (via eBay) last year and it worked out just a little less than the UK price in total but the eBay seller decided to undervalue it on the customs form so I got charged less than it should have been.

I'm hoping it's not a whole lot more than £399 when it comes out in the UK this time around. Exchange rates have been mostly on the up since it was originally released.

You pay 20% VAT, so plus $100
I'll buy mine when I'm over in the US next week - 32GB sneaks in at just under £400 with current x-rates and state tax. On top of that, I'll run it through my business as a expense so that I don't have to pay corporation tax on that £400, so the net cost to myself is effectively £320.

x2 for me.

With sales tax, not worth the hassle and lack of useful warranty.

Good luck with what, walking into a store on the afternoon of launch and walking out with one in hand?

Even with Sales tax and current exchange it will still be 90 quid cheaper then UK if you are actually in US to pick one up in person!!!! Thats assuming the UK prices will be the same as iPad 1 launch!

Aye, I looked at the figures and also will be putting it through my business to make it even cheaper.

I saw in another thread that the iPad2 might be locked now too? It's unclear if the wording is referring to the fact that there are two different technologies (AT&T vs Verizon) or if it's an actual LOCK beyond that.

so you guys suggestion is to wait for the iPad 2 launch in UK??
To those ppl tat r goin to US~
Wanna do business ?? I will pay you extra to help me get an iPad 2~ ^^(ofcoz less than UK retail price)

Wow... You changed your tune quickly - yesterday you said its not worth while buying from the US and today your actually going there to buy one?!... ROLL EYES

So we'll both be in the US at the same time. Where are you going?... Wouldnt it be lovely if we could meet up. I would treasure that moment for ever Gryzor.

Perhaps we could stand in the que together and share so much.

US iPad in UK

Guys, I have a feeling the 3G models of the iPad 2 will not work in the UK. I have been looking closely at http://www.apple.com/ipad/3g/ and it seems to suggest No Sim is needed and that everything is on board so to speak.

Can anyone confirm this?

I would like to know if we will be able to order perhaps just a couple of days before launch so that we would receive one on day one of the launch.

I do not live anywhere near an Apple store and if I do buy from a local store and there is a cosmetic problem, such as a dead pixel, they would refuse to take it back.

It's only if you buy from an official Apple store or Apple online that you get the 14day no quibble warranty I understand.

Unless anyone knows any different.

WRONG. iPads are duty free items. And what does "plus import" mean??

WRONG. They're only duty free at the duty free shops. This is an import from an economic zone, and is thus not duty free, sales tax exists at the originating state.

WRONG. Do you STILL not understand the difference between duty and tax?

Unless it's changed for the iPad 2, I suggest you look here:

You'll pay sales tax in the US and VAT in the UK but NOT duty.

Do I hear an apology?

439 is a competitive price ( tablet vs tablet ) if not in the world market, but at least on a local level.

Apple is just one of many US companies who's world market prices for its products subsidise its home market ;)

My form implies otherwise. I definitely paid duty.

And no, I will not pay sales tax in the United States. Sales tax is VAT. The principles are slightly different.

EDIT: looking at my records, and the reproduced form, the classification codes are different, which would account for the 3.7% duty.
