Wow... You changed your tune quickly - yesterday you said its not worth while buying from the US and today your actually going there to buy one?!... ROLL EYES

So we'll both be in the US at the same time. Where are you going?... Wouldnt it be lovely if we could meet up. I would treasure that moment for ever Gryzor.

Perhaps we could stand in the que together and share so much.

this made me lols

I won't be getting an iPad until August-September at the earliest. I already have a MacBook and an iPod touch 2G and I'm currently unemployed so I can't justify £429 on some new technology until I've got a new job and payed other, more important bills.

Well done on you for prioritising. I really appreciate that you aren't one of those people who spend their into debt, then blame others.

I honour you.

+1 dude.

Hope you find a job sooner rather than later.

My form implies otherwise. I definitely paid duty.

EDIT: looking at my records, and the reproduced form, the classification codes are different, which would account for the 3.7% duty.

If the seller/sender classified it wrong then you could have paid duty... but you shouldn't have.
And no, I will not pay sales tax in the United States. Sales tax is VAT. The principles are slightly different.

Not sure what you're saying here. Sales tax and VAT are essentially the same thing but you'll pay it on goods in the US (unless there's an exemption in the state you're buying) and you'll pay it again in the form of VAT when that item reaches the UK.

Customs officers won't give a flying f*$% if you've already paid US sales tax on an item.

The item appears to have been reclassified. It was opened and inspected by HMC before it got to us.

It differs from sales tax in that it is collected and remitted to the government only once, at the point of purchase by the end consumer.

I never said you wouldn't have to pay it again.

Where did I say that they did?

Well ya got me.... because I really don't have a clue what you're talking about.

You said "And no, I will not pay sales tax in the United States. Sales tax is VAT. The principles are slightly different."

Then you said "I never said you wouldn't have to pay it again."

If you buy it in the US you'll (most probably) have to pay sales tax on it. And you'll pay VAT when it's declared in the UK.

Which is what I said originally... "You'll pay sales tax in the US and VAT in the UK but NOT duty."

So why did you have to argue?

Because you were arguing with me :/

I'll get mine from my local PC world, i'll get to use my friends managers discount :D

Wouldn't fancy going to the Apple reseller at Oxford, it's at the mouth of all the universities... queue alert.

this made me lols

Notice how he doesn't comment when people correctly pick up on his lies.

I love the way he was against it one minute and then on a plane to buy one the next.... His messages always give me great pleasure to read and laugh at!

we can only hope... Something to laugh at!

I think he must realise by now that no one believes a word he says... If he doesn't then I guess he's as special as we all thought.

Importing from US:

ipad 32gb wifi $599
Leather cover $69
NY sales tax $67
Post cost $49

US Total $783/£478

Customs £85
Customs admin charge £10

Total £573

Buying in UK

ipad £510
leather cover £60

Total £570

Only ways I can think of that could lower the US cost:

Label for customs at lower value to reduce customs charge
Get someone to bring it back in luggage as though they already owned it

Both risky and probably not worth it. Shame it seemed so plausibe to begin with. :(

The Apple Stores in London will be a nightmare so I may just pop round the corner to the big Curry's/PC world store and buy it from there on launch day.

1. It was a "nightmare" last year when we had only 1 big store. Now we got two - Regent Street and Covent Garden.

2. There are many more people interested in the iPhone than the iPad. The iPad launch won't be that bad.

3. Last year I woke up at 6.30am to be there in Oxford Circus at 7am. Got my iPad at 8.30am. Wasn't that bad.

PS: Anyone interested in any meetup by the way? I'd like to meet Apple and Tech lovers time to time.

WRONG. Do you STILL not understand the difference between duty and tax?

Unless it's changed for the iPad 2, I suggest you look here:
http://bundletech.com/blog/2010/03/no-import-duty-on-the-ipad/

or here:

You'll pay sales tax in the US and VAT in the UK but NOT duty.

Do I hear an apology?

May be better to refer to HMRC rather than the sage "pocketgamer"... Duty payable on anything over about £390.

While at the Arndale store yesterday getting new MBA several people came in wanting iPad 2's. I expect a busy store on the 25th.

Yeah that's true. I was at both Regent St launches for the IPad and iPhone 4 and I can tell iPhone 4 launch was by far the worst. I was in line for 5 hrs and that was with a reservation to pick up in store. Main reason is cos with iPhones a lot of people buy on contracts and thus line moves slow with credit checks and activations.

With IPads it's choose your model, pay then your done in and out.

FAir enough, but I can walk into my local Curry's megastore, 10 minute walk and be out the door 5 minutes later. But fair enough if the iPad launch at Regent Street wasn't that bad, I was actually thinking of the iPhone 4 one.
