In the US not eveywhere had stock of every kind of iPad.

Some only had 16 wifi. Some had no 3G at all. Or only 64GB 3G or only verizon.

Some places had only 3G and only 5 iPads.

The point is the demand in the US was one country and apple basically sold out.

People arriving at 3pm were not getting iPads. Even 2 hours in advance was too late at Apple stores.

So you have a choice - queue at Apple from 1pm and you can probably get any iPad 2. Any later and you may not get anything. Queue somewhere else and your taking a chance. You may not get an iPad as they don't hav much stock or they may simply not have the iPad model you want.

They were expecting the US release to be less than last year and it was BIGGER. So now you have around ten other countries PLUS the UK on Friday.

It WILL sell out. I promise you.

I would personally place an online order with credit card which won't b pe charged until it is shipped and then go a queue as well. That way you are covered shoji you strike out online.

Exactly what I'm doing except I'll be queueing from 9-10am

I will be ordering online, seeing how it goes during the day with third party retailers, and will probably end up knocking off at 4.30 to hit the local Apple store and see what's going on.

I imagine I'll be joining the end of a substantial queue, although the original iPad launch wasn't bad. I queued early with my delivered-a-day-before iPad to see what the fuss was about.

Utterly undecided on which smart cover to go for. Having tried out some very premium leather cases, I don't trust Apple's mastery of leather and will likely stick to their basics.

I'll most likely be putting the whole shebang into a foofbag, or other sleeve case, anyway.

Been lurking here for a while, time to post!

Went into a few stores in Worcester between 5:45pm and 6:30pm and here are their updates;

Comet- fairly helpful bloke didn't know anything about pre-ordering, but was able to find the above mentioned SKU on the system, as well as 3G ipad2s (no wifi versions). He said it looked like I could pre-order a 3G one... for next week! He tells me they have deliveries Mondays and Wednesdays only. As I wanted a wi-fi only, I left it at that (thinking about it, I may call in tomorrow to see if any were on the Weds delivery, but he seemed to think they wouldn't be).

Currys- nice chap told me this store (Blackpole, Worcs) would definitely not be receiving any at launch.

PC World- knew very little, and was only hopeful that the store MAY receive stock on Friday morning.

Looks like I'll be queuing at an Apple store starting around midday. Thinking of Touchwood Centre in Solihull or Cribbs Causeway in Bristol if any other forum goers want to pair up.

Mmmm I'm unsure if I'd trust my comet as For some reason they could end up getting less than they thought and then I'd be stuck I never have good experiences in comet and currys as all they care about is selling insurance it prob will be ok but I don't know if I'd trust many resellers promising they will get them on such a popular launch, but that's just me

Just called Comet call centre. Asked to be put through to my local store, the chap asked me why... i explained i wanted to reserve / pay a deposit for an iPad 2.... he answered abruptly... 'not any more'

I questioned him and he said they had an email round which forbids any transactions until 5pm on friday. Due to the contract they have in place with Apple

He did manage to tell me how many of a specific model the store were getting though, which does not sound good.

WiFi + 3G, 64GB White.... they're getting 2..................... :S

Just to confirm a few things..

1 - I just got the Curry's mailshot saying that the ipad 2 is coming.. That's another non-apple place for you to try.

2 - If John Lewis has ~1,000 ipads, that's approx 31 ipads at each store. Although they clearly won't just divide it out equally. That doesn't allow for many of the same type (i.e. approx 2-3 of each type).

3 - I went into my local vodafone shop (quite a small highstreet one) on the way home.. they said they would definitely be receiving some but they wouldn't know how many until thursday or friday morning. They thought it would be likely they'd only receive 3. 3?!! That's awful.

4 - I went into the Carphone Warehouse next to it - they said they had absolutely no idea if they'd even get any - and would be worth checking with them on the day.

So if you really want an ipad2 - I suggest you:
1 - Pace an online order at 0100 GMT Friday.
2 - Make a list of all your local non-apple stockist (i.e. Argos / Comet / PC World etc) and then around lunchtime on Friday - start calling all your local non-apple stockists and see if they have any - they may reserve one for you if they do.
3 - Get on your bike and get in the queue at the apple store!

If you do manage to get one - you can then cancel your online order. If you don't manage to get one - hopefully you only have to wait a week for it to be delivered.

Let the countdown commence!

Nick

what was the sku for? which model?

hmm all my comet store did was put me on a list for what i want and on friday will call me if they have them.

if i get the proper sku i could potentially reserve :D

I think as I live in a rural poor part of the UK every sale is sought after to hit
Store targets plus people are generally more helpful where I live.

The sku for the white 64gb 3G is 711730. If you need another model let me know and I will sort it by tomorrow.

If the pc world has an apple store inside it will have stock.

Will be very interesting this time next week. Who has, who hasn't, and where to queue if you're the latter.

Could be the current US situation in the UK?

I just spoke to comet and they said although, people had ordered them earlier, it was a mistake and they would go on sale at 5 on Friday.

I bet Apple are laughing at us all getting frantic trying to get stock updates.

Part of me wonders how much will be held back for the weekend trading. Some will and the queues will be less.

If you need favours out of the non apple stores I suggest doing it in person not over the telephone.

CPW online is a good option. Just means waiting a few days for delivery. Currys is the weakest option. The rest will all have stock and since most will get their iPad 2 from the Apple store the supplies at non apple stores will be sufficient.

If anyone gets unlucky let me know as I'm certain there will be spare in my
part of the UK.

Just rung PC world and was told they wouldn't know stock levels at individual stores until closer to the time.
Not going to risk it so will que up outside the Apple store where I know they will definitely have stock.

Will they be limiting the number of iPads per customer? Just as long as I can buy 2 then I'm happy.

Also, going to be queueing at Apple Store in Meadowhall. Anyone else? And what kind of time you going to be heading down there?

You made me scared about my paid order so I phoned them up and they said that they are allowed to do it. Basically if only 2 people ordered one, only that stock would come in and nothing else.

I still wouldn't trust Comet, order one online as a backup and cancel if comet come through for you

Yep it looks like fastest finger first really is the best way :p
Yep, planning the same thing. Work holiday year runs till 31st Mar, so was forced to book remaining before the launch date was announced meaning no queuing. Not a fan of the 5pm release, but, to be fair, even if it was early opening there's no way I could swing getting to an Apple store and into deepest Surrey for work.

Long time, no post... Last time I was round this way was iPhone 3G launch, and I remember being shocked at the queue at the Reading O2 for that. The complete mystery about stock levels for the iPad 2 reminds me of that experience - even after O2 had opened and their computers were busted they still wouldn't tell anyone what chance they had of getting an iPhone. And at that time they blatantly knew, and queue wasn't moving because of the computer mess-up, so it was frankly out of order. Fortunately for me, I was well within the stock, and that time the O2 store was a 3 minute walk from my work.

To be honest the folk that work on the shop floor have as much of a clue as we do.

All of the allocation per store will be likely coming from head office.

Each store will know their stock levels once their delivery arrives on Friday morning.

Just returned from Comet...

So after rushing to Comet and spending about half an hour trying to secure a pre-order with a deposit, I can confirm that I managed to achieve absolutely nada!

Firstly, I called up Comet CS who said I could go to the store and pay a tenner deposit.. so I went to the store. Luckily I was dealing with one of the managers (Carl), who was a nice chap.

Here is where the fun starts... are you ready?

Unfortunately, he didn't even know the iPad 2 was going on sale on Friday. He was saying Saturday 4pm!!

Anyway, I referred him to their website banner and also email mailshot which people had received, and also showed him this thread on MR, which showed other people had managed to secure an iPad 2.

He looked on the system - not convinced he knew what he was doing though! Anyway, he managed to find the iPads, but couldn't get any SKU numbers.

I asked him to call head office to see if they had a list of SKU's... so he did, and was informed that there would be no pre-orders.

Apparently, the Call Centre staff had been mis informed and also the website was incorrect (??)... and all those people who had paid a tenner deposit would not be guaranteed iPad 2's at all.

Even if I had paid the full amount, it's still not guaranteed as they didn't have a clue as to the stock levels.

So, I walked away slightly disappointed, but now I'm kind of glad... I hate shopping at places where I know more than the staff do. It's their job to know these things.. (don't want to offend any staff if you are on this thread)..

Personally, i don't think the comms is very good, and obviously there's more educated people out there who know whats what, and others who don't... it's just a farce! Comet ain't getting my money, I can tell you that. There's a PC World, 2x Currys, and Comet all within 5 min walking distance of each other!

So that was my experience... and the saga continues tomorrow ... trying to source down an iPad 2...

So if somebody queues outside this store all day, they will be out of luck?

Great PR Comet

Unlucky mate. Do tell if/when you source one of these elusive beasts!

All these comments about Conet/Cuurys etc. Not knowing about the iPad 2 launch are exactly why I'm going to queue outside the Apple store.
Even though it's going to mean a long wait, at least I know they'll have a decent stock and the staff know what they're talking about. Understand that not everyone has the time or a store near them but I'm making that decision.
