is that a decent price second hand? whatever happened to the 'Apple always keep their second hand value high'? :(

It's not a great price but the market has been flooded with them, and Apple smartly dropped the prices on new ones by £100, so anyone hoping to sell has had to accept a much lower offer than expected. Apple stuff does hold its worth but in this case, the market is saturated and as such the prices have plummeted.

Basic economics tells you high availability leads to reduction in price. My advice would be to hold off selling. Wait until you can no longer buy a new one from Apple and everyone who wants iPad 2 has one. Then price should sort itself out, and you'll get more cash for your old iPad.

Obviously if your wanting an ipad1, now is the time to buy a used one.

Yes, that would be sound advice. However, I had an offer and didn't really want to wait too long to sell, so I decided not to gamble. Definitely good advice to all sellers though.

Anyone know if an American iPad 2 on at&t (gsm) would work in the uk?
I know the ipad1 did. But the apple online store says iPad will work with (1 carrier) so not sure

Also. Anyone importing from the states? How are you going about it?
iPad 2 64gb 3G - uk £699 us -$829
Even with 10% tax in the us. Thats £556 in the US vs £699 over here

Sorry but to me it sounds exactley like a automatic general message they have put up. It doesn't even say iPad 2.

Are there any negatives of ordering from the states, will the UK appstore work on them properly etc ? I am tempted to go that route but very nervous something won't work as expected.

I ordered the original iPad from the US. Aside from having a US plug it was exactly the same as the UK one.

You can just buy a UK plug for it, right ? you must be able to.

Well if it truly is not going to give me any problems i may go for it. What about if i take it to an apple store, i am sure the warranty will not be valid etc.

Warranty is worldwide on Apple portables.

Just get a UK plug.

Done.

keep in mind apples ipad chargers are just usb socketed plugs so you can use pretty much any plug as long as it has a usb port.

been looking into it all evening and I think I'm gonna buy from the Us and import.
Viaddress seems the best bet.
they ship via indiana so sales tax will be 7% making the 64gb around $890
they'll fed ex 2-3 days it for $30 making it $920 in total (£570) which is over £120 cheaper.
they let you declare your own custom amount (but son't be silly and put $2!)
I figure I'll put $499 (iPad) as that's the start price.
then if I get hit by customs I'll be paying around £60-£70 still saving around £50-£70 of the UK release and getting it a little earlier
also stops me worrying that they may push back the UK release like the iPad 1.

had a look at Sendito as they go via oregon which means no sales tax (!)
but to use it you need to be a subscribed verified member and even then they want $65 for the shipping so I'd rather spend the extra 20 bucks n use viaddress...unless anyone else has any suggestions?

Lots of people are selling iPad's for incredibly low prices on eBay.

Personally I think those people are fools. They could easily sell their iPads with bidding starting at £100 less than the new price and get a very good price, specially if they include accessories.

Instead they are selling iPad's for low prices and driving the price down on eBay.

£330 for a 3G 16GB is a great price considering the prices of 32GB 3G models on eBay.

I hope those people realize they are losing money and stop listing them so low.

I too have an iPad to sell and it sickens me to think I may end up selling a 32GB 3G plus case plus dock plus screen protector for £300 based on current eBay prices. In fact I won't list that low. I will not list that for less than £450.

I have found someone in the US to buy me a new iPad on Friday so I can avoid the wait - but with the queues there is always the chance that he won't be able to get one. Who knows how much stock Apple have and how early he will be there for me... It is a definite guessing game but I figure even if they did sell out they would have new stock before the UK release.

Yep you can buy a UK plug. A cheap travel adaptor will sort it but you can probably get a proper Apple one too. I think I used the one that came with my Macbook.

Warranty is worldwide.

I ordered from eBay. It was sent by USPS in the States and delivered in the UK by Parcel Force. I had to pay tax and a Parcel Force handling fee in the UK.

It gets held up in customs while they assess it... think mine was just a couple of days.

I considered doing the same thing again this time but as long as the UK date doesn't get bumped, I'm happy to wait. Ordering from the US will only get it to me a week early at best and knowing my luck it'll be held up in customs so long I wont get it until April!

Amazon have a listing now, hopefully they offer pre-orders.

According to Apple the warranty is only international once applecare is purchased, otherwise your american warranty won't cover you in the UK. I have no idea if this is correct ... and it wouldn't be the first time someone in the Apple Store is wrong ... but this is what I was told.

Could someone help me. I've had a wifi only iPad 1 which I have been using with a MiFi. What I was wondering was whether it was possible to cut the SIM from my MiFi down to size and get a 3G iPad 2 and put it in there?

Its on the '3' network and it is your standard 3 data SIM. Can I just use that, or is the iPad SIM very specific (other than being microSIM), and will no other SIM work in it besides an iPad specific microSIM?

So it depends luck whether it will get held by customs ? I'm trying to write less amount of the product on the customs declaration form... any suggestions u guys ?

Any micro SIM will work in an iPad. I have a SIM only deal for my iPhone 4 which works in my iPad just fine. I'm sure 3 would transfer your contract to a Micro SIM. If you cut down just be careful you don't end up jamming the cut down SIM in your new iPad 2.

Ways To Get iPad 2 From USA

eBay

Take a chance and buy one from eBay. You have paypal protection so if
it doesn't actually get delivered then you can get your money back regardless of if the seller was genuine or not.

If you want to play it safe then wait until people have photos of actual in hand ipad 2 on eBay although that may cost more depending on demand on eBay.

US to UK Import Companies

There are a few companies that can buy an iPad for you from Apple online and will ship it on to you in the UK for approximately a total 12-14% of the price of the ipad. You have to pay for the iPad and shipping to the company in the US and then for shipping to the UK. They may take an additional fee for extra services which may be another 2-4%.

The two companies I know of are: bundlebox.com and hopshopgo.com, Hop Shop Go is partership between PayPal and ComGateway.com and as such is protected like eBay by PayPal protection so if you have any issues you get the money right back. Not that you should - as paypal wouldn't partner with someone they couldn't do reliable business with.

The negative side of this is that Apple cancelled lots of orders being sent to the addresses of these companies when the first iPad came out because they knew they were being shipped internationally before the international release. So you may end up ordering and waiting and not getting an iPad because Apple cancels the order. Again you would get your money back but you will lose time waiting and wondering.

Family & Friends

Obviously if you have family and/or friends in the US you could ask them to buy it for you.

I have plenty of family in the US but I would never imagine they would queue and go and buy an iPad for me anytime soon even if I paid them. I would get it eventually but not before it came out here! and you can't exactly hassle friends and family to hurry up!

Others

Occasionally you may encounter someone who does lots of business in the US who is willing to buy one for you and ship it over... I can't tell you were to find these people or if you can trust them. But if you know anyone like that then maybe you can ask them.

I personally went for this final option and the total cost for me is going to be exactly the same as buying here in the UK in 3 weeks (depending on customs of course).

SHIPPING!

If you want an easy and fast process from the US to your door and you can choose shipping courier I would recommend FedEx. They are very fast. 2 day international delivery from the US (ie, shipped Mon arrives Wed).

FedEx however is quite expensive although in my personal experience better and more reliable than UPS.

FedEx also send you an invoice for customs charges so you do NOT have to pay when the item is delivered.

So can you get FedEx for cheaper? YES

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has a contract with FedEx to deliver Global Express Guaranteed in 2 days to the UK. It is approximately 20% cheaper than direct FedEx and I assume much easier to drop at a post office than FedEx place.

You can track the package using the USPS tracking number and if you enter your USPS tracking number on the FedEx reference tracking site it will show up on FedEx as well. This service will most likely cost you around $100. Yes it is alot but for a fast and efficient customs process it is in my eyes worthit.

If you chose slower shipping then I would suggest that UPS would be better as USPS standard international is delivered by Parcel Force and they want customs money before delivery.

Customs

We have to pay VAT at 20% and if the item is worth over £135 import duty at 12% (I believe that is correct it may be less).

Obviously that means that customs could easily charge you over £200 on a iPad 2 worth £600.

However, Customs will not open your item if it is labelled correctly so you could declare its value as less than the amount for import duty and have a small fee to pay. I am not telling you to do this. Just saying that it is an option. Worst case scenario is that they open the package and charge you the full customs fees but if your selling your old iPad then you should have enough to cover it.

I hope this little guide has been helpful!
