Depends on how you do it. If you are smart about selling your old systems, you can be up to date by paying 100$ per year.

There is that, I agree that the resale of used Apple products is quite high, but to get like for like on an upgrade (iPhone 4 16GB for iPhone 5 16GB) I would still have a difference of £170 (I could sell the IP4 at Mazuma mobile for £320 now) now add that difference to the £170 that I would have lost last year on on an upgrade, then the yearly cost is a hefty £340.

That is the point - alternate redesign with a speedbump

Most people will go for a 2 year refresh - but in a fast moving world - that is just too long for the competition to sneak ahead.

What is a good idea is making it an annual event - like car models in the US.

That way you take away the uncertainty of "is there a new one next month?"

People can budget ahead and not have to think about it.

genius idea.

PS - mock up makers - add credibility to your designs by mocking up a flash for the rear camera. FFS

Agreed, but I think that Apple, unlike most mobile companies, do work to the automotive model that you suggest, in that a refresh is more or less guaranteed after a year, and a new, redesigned model after 2 years.

Edit; Having said that, cars are normally refreshed yearly for about 4 years with a newer designed model in year 5.

Like others have said. Higher resolution screens have a much higher pixel count and would be better for viewing images and watching movies. Although with a higher resolution often times things like icons and fonts are smaller and therefore could be harder to see or read. This probably isn't a problem for a college kid but could be for someone with poor vision. I always go for higher resolution whenever possible.

My realistic wish list for iPad 2:

-Dual core 1Ghz, preferable only if it extends battery life and swifter map zooming

-Rear Camera, cool for AugReal but is this mass market yet? Other than keeping up with Androids, what good a rear camera is for? Taking snaps with your iPad looks incredibly dumb. Front camera can be useful for FaceTime

-Gorilla glass, and more durable back panel. If you want people will be carrying iPad out of their homes. Great outdoor advertising: every time I see some folks in coffee shops with iPad, I feel envious. The feeling of "I want that too" is very strong & undeniable.

-Lighter glass if you want people to hold this for longer period. Lighter everything: battery, casing etc.

-Use better display technology that will not wash out under the sun. I cringe everytime I see that Kindle ad.

-Google Map can lag under certain conditions. Either Apple make peace with Google or implement Apple's own Map app. I heard Apple bought some Internet Map company recently..?

-Lighter iPad :)

I think there has been a mis understanding about a complete redesign. Surely this refers to the new chipsets and processor and not the externals. The design of the case is still hugely current and also the 3G is still shipping units

complete redesign of iphone? Hard to believe...they said they spent a year and a half redesigning for the iphone 4...it would be cheaper to skip the redesign this year I would assume.

As far as it being dual GSM/CDMA...it's possible and believable except for the fact that we saw they will come out with 2 iphones 4,1 and 4,2. Makes sense one is GSM the other CDMA. That casts doubt on the whole "complete redesign" claim.

There could be two phones with different screen sizes.

You know the truth is I upgrade every handset every year (since apple iPhone 3g). the resale value on these apple devices will help recoupe a small loss and sometimes I even gained (from selling the iPhone 3GS). I will have ZERO doubt when it comes time to sell my iPhone 4, it will bring me a hefty sum enough to help cover for the iPhone 5. That's why you buy Apple products - they are highly regarded as being high quality expensive products in which the products will have high resale value.

You don't buy a BMW and expect it to resale like a Honda.
I agree, they usually sell much better than many other kinds of hardware. For me, it's other things that made me not buy an iPhone 4 - my subscription plan. But it'll run out to match the sale of the iPhone 5 nicely. ;)

Fonts would just be scaled up though (at full quality). Since they're vector based, they're the one area that would take almost no work to get right. iOS would automatically adjust them to the appropriate size. Note that there's absolutely nothing you have to do as a developer regarding text in your application when updating it for the Retina Display of the iPhone 4. Icons are bitmap images so those take more dealing with (including multiple sizes of each icon for each resolution, etc).

Sad iPad2 Design

The so called iPad2 design which currently pops up in this forum. is the saddest thing i have seen in years. It's back to the originally iPhone design and has nothing to do with the design language of the current Apple gear (iPhone4, MacBook Air etc.)

Round edges instead of sharp hooks. Way to much disturbing details and cheap material looks.

Thus I do not believe this to be the direction Apple would take. It's a decoy!

I'd have to agree.

I personally think the new iPad designs popping up look pretty ugly. Hopefully this is not true and just rumors!

I don't follow the bit I bolded. Surely your yearly cost is the £170? Two lots of £170 = two upgrades over two years?

Also, eBay prices are generally higher than what recycling companies will pay, so I'd say it really is possible to do a yearly like-for-like upgrade for £150 ish.

SUPER-HIGH RESOLUTION!!!

.... When I read stuff like that, I think "mediocre bump" in resolution. What about circa 1400x1000 (yes, my ratio is off). If higher than that, I'd have to admit that Apple really achieved a great res. for this device.

The 1400x1000 approx. display puts the little iPad on the level of a near-desktop but doesn't interfere with the iMacs. There is no way this thing will come close to iMac resolution (1920x1080) in the next year or two.

With 2x or 3x computing power and autonomous computing capability (not having to hook up to another Mac/PC) this will become the all-rounder computer for the average Joe. No doubt. In 2013 when I am ready for a new computer, the iPad might be the ticket, my MacPro staying as corner-beast shoved into some closet in the house for rare high-end functions and complex professional work.

Am I the only one who thinks this redesign is SO fugly?
It's a step back from the current thin design.

I hope this thing is fake. I guess it'll be more reason for me to get a 1st gen after the 2nd comes out if this thing is legit. Yuck!

And this is why i skipped the iPhone 4, and kept my iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1 and surviving) waiting for the iPhone 5. A lot of sources said that the iPhone 5 will likely have a "different form factor".
The iPhone 4 is actually a truly amazing phone, however because of the bad publicity it received and after the iPhone design chief left Apple. I'm sure they got working on a brand new looking one to make everyone forget about the antenna issue altogether (like what someone said earlier).
But i don't think the iPhone 4 -> iPhone 5 upgrade will be like the 3G -> 3GS.
There's too much competition for that.
Remember the time when the iPhone 3G came out? and then the 3GS? There were hardly any competitors, times were different then. Now with Android coming out with a bang, and many other companies following, Apple can't allow their competition to get 1yr to catch up by just providing a spec bump. Apple will be forced to provide a much better phone.

While you're at it better wait for Iphone 6. It'll surely be better than 5. Personally I'm waiting for Iphone 7.

Yep, you’re right, I must have been over thinking it.

Still IMHO 150 to 170 quid for a refresh still seems a bit steep, my original point was that it made much more sense to upgrade after 2 years, a point that I am still comfortable with.

If they've already completely redesigned the iPhone for 5 then I would have to guess that it is some kind of huge FU to Mark Papermaster.

Maybe it just me, but I don't really see the advantage to dual core cpus in phones. I currently have a Droid 2 rooted and it comes with a qualcomm(gpu is close to the one in the iphone 4) and I never thought to myself; uh wow I wish my phone(cpu wise) was faster.
There is a massive advantage from dual cores: The power that the processor uses grows more than the speed. A processor at twice the speed can take four times the power. With dual cores, you can run each core at half the speed, for a quarter of the power. So two cores at half the speed each give you the same total speed, but at half the power.

Jailbreak, unlock, eBay. I've had all 4 iPhones.. i've paid $400 total of my own money. Hell, i sold my 3GS and made profit AFTER buying the iPhone 4.

Do you buy the next iphone at full price? I was wonder how people do that...

sooooooooo this means Verizon will dick over the buyers that purchased in February and come out with a new one 4 months later? Great!!! Or this is still just part of the att yearly release?

Starting Jan. 16th Verizon is ending their "new every 2" promotion. Current Verizon subscribers will have 1 more "grandfathered" upgrade, but new subscribers (those that buy the iphone 4 on verizon) will have to wait 2 years to get the upgrade price. There is an article in the WSJ.

If the redesign thing is true there are gonna be a bunch of angry VZW iphoners come June.
Then, we can officially say "welcome to the world of Apple"

It's not Apple specific. New Moto phones are coming well less than a year after previous Droids. Samsung will be releasing new phones less than a year after the releases of the Galaxy S phones. HTC, Nokia, LG, they all do it. People tend to blame Apple's yearly upgrades for making people feel inferior holding the old products. But this is worse with virtually every other phone brand.

I shudder at the thought of complaints for fast upgrades if other brands get as much recognition and attention as Apple gets. The Motorola Atrix will become available about 6 months after the Droid 2. Do you hear Android users complain about how Motorola is hurting the feelings of the Droid 2 buyers?

I really think the June release will still be just ATT, The media and customers will BLOW UP at them if they release a new phone 4 months after they announce it on their network

I never really understood this sort of thinking. I mean, yes, people will blow up about it but I don't understand why.

The phone they purchased is the same it was the day they decided to purchase it. Whether something new comes out or not.

If a new phone comes out do all the old ones stop working?

I'm still using an iPhone 3G - works as well as it did the day I got it.

What's all the fuss about?

I also drive a 2001 model car. And I'm perfectly content with it until it completely dies and I go shopping again.

the people feel like morons because they could have had something much better for the same price

that's sweet. should drop costs a bit to manufacture the iphones. also maybe the atv3 would officially support 1080p:)
