In before "should I wait for iPad 3?" posts

Congrats. You want a prize or something?

This just doesn't make sense. Maybe the iPad 2 is a small upgrade. Mostly aesthetics, faster processor, and a camera, but not much else? We'll have to see what they announce, but it seems like the iPad 2 may not be worth it if the iPad 3 is coming soon, and may even include retina.

Still, I doubt this article. Apple usually follows a strict one year cycle. I don't see them releasing a new iPad six months after a new one.

The Angry Peanut Gallery gripes because Apple isn't "innovating" fast enough with their yearly refresh cycle ("New Android devices come out every month!!!" *wail*).

Apple moves to a 6-month refresh cycle.

The Angry Peanut Gallery gripes because they can't buy a new iGizmo without it being usurped in 6 months.

Apple can't win.

Fortunately, the Peanut Gallery is not representative of the general consumer population.

The people saying they'd be pissed if this happened will also be complaining about too little RAM or too weak a processor in the iPad 2.

This guy is a moron!

Apple is only going to refresh the iPad once this year.

Apple has made more money (and money is what it's about) on it's iOS devices than all of the Android devices combined last year.

7 inch iPod touch... that will help make all of the Android tablets look like "big ipods" while the iPad is a "real tablet"

Ooohhhhhh, this is awesome.

I have the iPad 1.

I give that to my wife (or I keep it).

I had always planned to get the iPad 2. Keep it (or give it to my wife).

Repeat with iPad 3, but for my younger daughter.

Repeat with iPad 4, but for my older daughter.

In that order, because I just got my older daughter the new MacBook Pro -- actually now almost the "old" MacBook Pro.

i would love to see your family in an airport, 4 ipads side by side

Makes perfect sense to me

Makes perfect sense to me: they release the iPad with all the updates but higher resolution display in March and in September comes only the display update, which they can be justified as update of "only one component, but otherwise the same" to those who complain that they just bought the iPad 2. Many will nevertheless also want the iPad 3. I will not buy any new iPad unless the display has higher resolution. It's the only reason I sold the iPad 1 (and an older Macbook Pro 15", and the 24" LED display) in the first place: no fun to read anything with those blotchy fonts.

ok at first i was a little "wtf" about all of this. it really makes little sense to introduce something if you are going to abandon it less than a year later . tech moves fast but not that fast amigo .

but alas my logic started seeping thought the rage and confusion.

logical conclusion #1
iPad1 is selling balls on fire crazy right now. hold something like 75% of the tablet market. so they have the clout to ride them coat tails for a while
which means no update this spring. but a more loaded update in the fall to better compete with the new kids on the block

(this would piss me off cuz i just got my tax money back and i was hoping to be irresponsible and blow it on a new ipad like...in a few weeks.)

Logical conclusion #2
we see the birth of the 7' iPad. think about it. September is their media event. ipods/itunes/ yadda yadda. so we get (what some people would assume by hear-say) the ipad3 when in fact its nothing more then that weird bastard child of the ipod touch and the ipad (the iPoad?) which of course would fit Mr.Jobs comment on 7' tablets being useless.
cuz this aint no tablet! its a 7' PMP its like a more robust ipod touch. cheaper then the ipad less junk in the trunk but deff a kick butt little diddy that will entertain get you games and movies and prob have a front facing camera for that lovely facetime that only works when you have friends....(where can i get my iFreinds STEVE!!!)

so yeah those two conclusions ive come to...

delayed ipad or new product altogether.

and now for an apple ....:apple:

I think #2 makes more sense than #1. Despite Steve's comments on a 7" iPad, I still think it's a strong possibility. One more thing in Sept. could easily be a 7" version of the iPad 2 with retina display & iOS 5. It's not written in stone that Apple can't release one to see how the market responds. Something tells me the results would make Apple happy.

How about Apple start focusing on OSX Lion :p. Honestly I've used an iPad, and its a great experience no doubt. But does it really replace a desktop? Not for me, and I think its the same for the vast majority of people. I'm a bit worried as to what will happen to OSX Lion, I don't know how Apple is managing creating iPad 2, 3 & iPhone 4, 5, along with OSX.. I have really high expectations of OSX Lion, I would be really disappointed if there isn't a new interface, so far the preview we've seen for OSX Lion wasn't a game changer, Infact it's a lot like Snow Leopard, with features that we could probably go without..

Anyway thats just my thoughts :p, I use Mac OSX as my primary OS, I've got an iPod Touch that hardly ever use.. I would really like Apple to start focusing on Macs..

Don't you realize that iOS and OSX are on a collision trajectory? It could take a few more years to happen or it's even possible that Lion could be the final roar of OSX before the "merge" occurs. It's not just OSX, Windows, as least as the full-fledged OS that it is today could become extinct in the future, replaced by who knows what. Several analysts have predicted this with both OSX and Windows. Sure, many of us will feel sentimental over the demise of the traditional OS, but we'll adjust. Actually, perhaps the better word to use would be evolution instead of demise.

Apple sees iOS as their "second chance" to beat Windows (and Google as well) in the consumer space. iOS is what's driving Apple stock ever higher. 2011 has been an unusual year for Apple so far with the release of a new version of the iPhone 4 (for Verizon) eight months after the initial release, a possible white iPhone 4 release only 3 months before the assumed summer announcement of the next iPhone, the possibility of more than one versions of the next iPad, possibly a 7" version and who knows what else.

Apple's on fire right now and they're running as fast as they can to avoid anyone who has a fire hose, including Google.:D

yea, thats what I was thinking, when iphone 4 was launched it was hands down the best, buy may 2010, it will be behind some android devices. a disadvantage for apple since there only one company not 5. but a 6 month cycle would be nice, I would waste even more hours on macrumors.com

One of the great strengths of the Android Model is availability more up-to-date hardware, so this may be the only way Apple can respond to the impending slaughter.

Don't know if it will work though.

HAHAHAA impending slaughter. When I want a cluttered, unorganized, widgety and underapp'd computer, i'll grab a bolt gun and take apple out myself.

Hardware quantity is all Android has on iOS. And I for one am not interested in buying a new device every month. I'll take my quality products and hold on to them a couple years. Then I'll go back and buy another Apple device. Survey says Droid defectors are in a much higher percentage than iOS.

No Retina display = NO BUY.

I'm really not getting why people say this, or even think it's plausible ...

You want Apple to deliver an iPad with nearly the same number of pixels as a 27inch iMac i5, in a 9.7 inch form factor, with ( presumably ) the same level of battery life, OpenGL game performance at full resolution, and be priced at or near the current iPad... 18 months after the delivery of the original iPad?

Stop and think about that.

...impending slaughter...

Thanks for the laugh... a good belly laugh is good for the soul :D

That is the best way to describe what will happen when you have an OS that is on par with iOS for tablets, with cheaper, more varied hardware, and more current hardware.

Are you kidding?

That is like saying I am going to skip iPhone5 because iPhone6 is going to come out right after it. There is no way, let me repeat, NO WAY THAT APPLE IS GOING TO REFRESH THE iPAD FOUR MONTHS AFTER IT RELEASES A NEW VERSION. IT WILL NOT HAPPEN.

Not gonna happen.

Like they're going to launch mass-production this month, reduce in May, and launch mass-production again in August... Doesn't make sense.

Sounds very familiar to the whole Verizon dibasco.

Never gonna happen - Spring is the ideal time of year for a device like the iPad - you get sales all year long, a bump from "back to school", a BIG bump in the Holidays, once again a small one with tax returns, then you get to immediately repeat it. Best bang for buck.

I like your logic here. Makes total sense when you think about it.

Doesn't make sense to line the iPad with the iPod announcements

I completely cannot see them taking the iPads and putting their release cycles in line with another product line... I realize there are a lot of similarities between the iPod and the iPad... but as of right now they have iPads announcements in late winter early spring, iPhones in the summer, iPods/Macs in the fall... leaving the different product lines spaced out over the course of the year makes much more sense... you can have more focused marketing around each product line... plus it gives you steady press all year around because media is constantly talking about your company and different products all through out the year... and for any company its good to have constant reminders of you company and your products in your consumers face all year long...
