You missed what I wrote...I said "retina for iPad". They had to figure out a new way of making that screen. The iPad 3 screen was first of its kind. Maybe not first with "high PPI" but certainly of its kind. The screen was made perfectly for most of us.

Dont forget that ENGINEERS design this stuff before a company invests millions into it. Its not like they just throw crap out there and see what happens. Im sure IGZO screens will be pretty close to what they anticipate them to be.
Be that as it may, retina for ipad is still based on original LCD technology.I don't see it as a new technology. It is a refinement, much like the current generation plasma tv's.The first generation had problems like burn in but now it is almost emininated.

IGZO is a radical new technology based on totally new materials.Samsung has bought up 5% of Sharp to gain access to it.Of course I don't see problems happening like catastrophic failure but I am sure there are going to be a lot of niggles that borderline OCD owners are going to report.

IgZo is still semiconductor LCD technology ...so no, it's not radically new technology.

Apple almost never goes more than twelve months without revamping its major mobile product lines, which means that the iPad 5 should have a release date no later than October 2013. However, the iPad 4 arrived after the iPad 3 had been on the market for a mere six months, meaning that Apple could conceivably introduce the iPad 5 as soon as April. But according to the latest news debunked by Apple Supplier, the iPad 5 may be released on June 29. But there is no specific date for that. So the only thing we can do is just wait patience.

We would have seen way more leaks of parts if April/May was really that possible

Also we have precedence on this matter. The last time they broke with the whole 1 year give or take a month was the iPhone 4S which was like 15-16 months after the iPhone 4. Which also had an 'odd' mini release of another model (for Verizon) a handful of months before the traditional and expected date. And the iPhone 5 was one year after that later date.

Now we have a break in the scheme, this time early. And a new model (the 128gb) coming 'mid stream'. The more likely conclusion is that Apple was tired of folks griping about how the current iPad was missing features from the new iOS version because there needed to be a hardware change, felt they could get more sales of a new model during holiday instead of after, and didnt want folks griping about a delay with all the analysts hue and cry of 'issues' as the cause. So they decided to change the release time to the fall with the new iOS and before holiday and went with a short turn around not a long. And released this big storage model now because there won't be a spring release otherwise they would have just gone big as a 'one more thing' detail

Just like they would more likely have done with the Verizon phone had the new model been in June or the T-Mobile now.

look into the SEC submissions of insider stock purchases (public record) at AAPL to see how confident they are in what they are releasing later this year (whether its summer or fall). that's always a good sign for any major company

The latest rumor I have read on the Ipad 5 appears to be 3rd quarter.

I would have to strongly consider this over my ipad 4 if it comes to fruition regarding thin and lighter. Of course other specs matter but this is encouraging.

53% lighter would be amazing. I honestly don't think it needs to be any thinner though. Some people are complaining about how the edges of the iPad mini are uncomfortable...

53% lighter, i dont think so. Thats lighter then the iPad mini 😕

good catch. I am not sure on release date though given rumors on timeframe I posted elsewhere on the forum including a new company doing the touch panels though that was for the Mini 2 but it should be the same for the 5. The same company though was going to be assisting with the redesign of the ipad 5.

The size and weight of the new ipad I posted has me doubtful as well. Over 50% less for weight is unbelievable. That would make me go for the 5 more than the Mini 2.

Is anyone basing their decision to go with the iPad 5 on whether it's jailbreakable or not?

I might be waiting til evasi0n jailbreaks whatever the 5 is on.

Wasn't March the month to look out for 1 month ago? My guess we will see a similar article in one month that will claim the iPad 5 to be scheduled for release in May.

Well find out within the next 8 months. There will almost definitely be a new ipad by then.

how much weight can apple trim off the 10" ipad?

that's my biggest deterrent to getting another one. I had an ipad 2, the lightest one, and it was too heavy to hold for long reading. The ipad mini's weight was just about right, and it's not that much bigger. So, any engineers now how they did it? materials used, etc.? I'd like to see the ipad's weight cut in half for the ipad 5. wishful thinking, probably.

I think it'll be around 500 grams. Material they use isn't that heavy anyway. Most significant weight is the lithium ion battery which won't get lighter until battery technology improves. They could save some weight by using a more power efficient screen so they can use a smaller battery or there were rumours they might remove one of the LED backlight bars.

Also, why would Apple do a 6 month release cycle for ipad and not other products as some have suggested?

To cash in on the holiday season, as some have suggested the change in the adapter pressed Apple to ammend the ipad 3's adapter so it would fall in line with its other newly updated iOS devices.

I really hope they announce it in April. I'm using a 2 (I did have a 3 but returned it) and gambled on a 5 coming out around now. I almost bit the bullet and got the 4, but a thinner lighter version really appealed to me. I'm starting to regret it now. My 2 really is too slow for proper internet use and I'm starting to need that more often now than in the past.

It seems I'm always waiting on Apple Products recently - iMac late 2012 was a humongous wait, iP4S was about 4 months later than people predicted and now this odd iPad 4 release is going to push back the 5 possibly until October.

First world problems... suck it up, me.

Apple isn't switching to a 6 month cycle, under any circumstance. Commercially, it will kill the interest, after the initial hype.

Since ipad 3 was launched in March 2012, and roll outs did take time hitting into late April/ early May. Counting the exact number of months till late Oct / early Nov, it equates to about 7-8 months before they launched the ipad 4th gen. The rollouts have taken its time and it was only by almost Jan, that they finished rolling out to most of their markets.

So if you take all that into consideration, its likely that if we do will see an ipad announcement this season , its going to be in laround May with rollouts presumably starting late May/early June. What they are technically trying to do is to reduce the one year waiting time to around 8-10 months, speeding it by a slight margin.

And just for the record there wont be any ipad 6th gen in 6 months, and don't expect one till april of 2014, as the 20nm A7/A7X should be up and running only by then. Right now we are at max going to get a modified A6/A6X.

Could they just launch in fall again?
