I'm still in denial.

iPhone OS 4.0 will be shown off before iPad's release. Multitasking and Videoconferencing are in there.

I think it will ship with a camera.

Only closed minded morons think this way.

There are people out there who can afford to buy Rev A then upgrade to Rev B & beyond, while doing a hand me downs to fellow family members. Especially, people who love their gadgets. :D

+1....they just don't know:D

IMO the usefulness of a camera will be due more to clever 3rd party apps than to iChatting. Apps like Delicious Library, or ones that take your picture and then incorporate it into the app in some novel way will probably provide more utility than videoconferencing. iChat is cool, don't get me wrong, but I honestly rarely use it despite having the ability to do so.

Just think about it. Apples works very hard at the design and user experience.

If the Ipad had a camera ether you would tire your arms out holding out far enough from your face, or the other person would be looking up your nose it you had it on your lap.

The only time I see the camera working is when docked, and well thats not very apple to me.

I want a webcam in it, but I seriously can't see it working in a tablet. do to the fact that a laptop base sits flat a webcam works.

hey, nice excuse.... I can't wait to see what you'd say when they release that gen 2 :D

pal :)

You're in denial. If iPhone OS 4.0 comes out it will be at WWDC 2010 in June. After the iPad is being sold with iPhone OS 3.2

Developers would need to get ahold of 4.0 before anything came out.

I question the 4.0 stuff. To go from 3.2 to 4.0 is a big step.

I won't be getting (soon), but my prediction is that the camera version will be introduced just in time for this year's Christmas shopping season. People with v1 who need the camera will "gift" their v1 units to nieces and nephews, and will upgrade to v2 (which will increase the number of iPads buying apps. And those people who waited will ask loved ones for v2 as presents.

The interesting question will be.... once the camera enabled version is introduced will Apple continue to sell the non-camera version?

I think they will discontinue the non-photon-capturing units because the pricing grid gets really messy otherwise.

Just my totally uninformed thinking....

I never understand this line of thinking. Most people whom are early adopters understand that technology moves forward irregardless. If I have disposable income, and want something, why should I hold off because there will be something better in v2? I also have the added benefit of having usage of the device for the first year, which while not directly quantifiable, serves some purpose as well.

It reminds me of all the people who told me I was crazy to spend $600 on the iPhone when it first came out, and then further mocked me when Apple dropped the price by $200. If your life is substantially altered by ~$200, then maybe luxury gadgets shouldn't be a concern irregardless. Plus, between Apple giving me a $100 credit and me selling the phone unlocked on eBay, I actually came out ahead lol. How's that for being a moron....

My sentiments exactly. I couldn't agree with you more. Well said.

Maybe he'll do it right before iPad goes on sale? And we'll get our beloved camera and, heck, multitasking too!

Totally, video conferencing requires multitasking. These require OS 4.0. OS releases are previewed in March. OS 4.0 will be unveiled before the iPad is launched.

Videoconferencing will have iChat Theatre, so you can browse the web with a friend! (Or do a Keynote Presentation to them...)

iPad will have a camera. People will go crazy for this thing.

Anyone notice Steve didn't do his famous "one last thing..." this time round?

Maybe he'll do it right before iPad goes on sale? And we'll get our beloved camera and, heck, multitasking too! Who knows?

It certainly wouldn't hurt to 'refresh' the buzz in late March. Would it?

Absolutely. Apple wants to further create buzz for the iPad, and I'll bet money what we get come March is more than what's been shown.

Don't know if it'll be something as significant as an added hardware feature, but they're not going to let it go on sale without some other type of press release.

The iPhone had it's glass screen and youtube, and I suspect(hope) Apple will do something similarly for the iPad. I personally don't care about a camera, but my one major gripe is lack of multi-tasking!

Video conferencing isn't all bad. I would imagine most people doing so with family or friends would have the decency to use discretion when in public with this thing. I don't know, we'll see.

Oh, I completely agree I do it every weekend with siblings living in the U.K. My fear is it being mainstreamed to mobile devices - knowing that most people have poor etiquette when it comes to them.

I feel certain that iPhone OS 4.0 will be released mid year. It gets unveiled in March each year.

The iPad will ship with 3.2 in March, hopefully with a camera of limited use with that release. If it ships with a camera, 4.0 will bring the videoconferencing features.

I see this being said all the time and I call hogwash. If you are doing a webcam chat you will be looking at the screen, thus people will not be looking up your nose. Also most people will be holding it about 45 deg. up from their lap. Who would lay the pad on their lap and hold a video chat and not look at the screen but look straight ahead ?

Me too

Plus Like you said it's all in 4.0, you'll see

Your correct, but just try photo booth with video running, and place macbook screen where the ipad would sit, and you will see what I am saying.

Either way, your holding it with your hands, which means it moves way to much.

Remember when headsets were first released & people were wearing them & everyone looking at them all funny? Then some of them had the amazed look when they realized you were talking into a wired or wireless headset. :D

+1....they just don't know:D

Try to keep up, Sparky:

Ya know, call me silly, but...

... having a USB form factor plug -- for the express purpose of uploading photos from a camera -- doesn't necessarily imply that the USB plug is 100% USB-specification compliant. That is, it doesn't mean that USB devices which need powered through the USB will be powered, right? (After all, does the 30-pin connector even support supplying power to an external device? It supports charging the iPad/iPod, but not necessarily supplying power out, right?)

In other words, having a USB dongle won't necessarily mean support (in hardware or software) for all classes of USB devices.

No doubt it will move more than usual.

this is quite a curiosity. there must be at least one logical reason for apple to have left out the camera in this model. after all, it is such an obvious feature to include in such a device.

As of right now its for cameras, but yes the dock connector does support power out, thats how my bluetooth unit is powered.

But apple would be crazy to not let this thing print to a printer.

If you watch the 720p keynote on youtube you can see a flicker in the centre of the iPad's top bezel as Job's shows it to the crowd for the first time. You can see it glint in the light at 9:05. Likely, it is nothing more than the ambient light sensor, but there is something there and I don't doubt Apple was playing with a camera at one time.
