Ipad $$

Now it only I could even find one in the US for testing... But Congrats to everyone who did.

Good to see the Apple fans around the world are heading out in droves to support the iPad. This device really is a game changer. I love mine, but I haven't been able to find the camera connection kit anywhere!

Tell me about it. Apple stores told me when I was getting my ipad, that if I really wanted 3g (or any ipad for that matter) to order it from apple, because they did not have any; and wifi models were hit or miss as to being in stock. I really wanted a 64g 3g, but settled for the 32g wifi (turns out 32gb is just big enough for what I need).

As for the camera kit. None in stock at any apple stores either.... I looked online, Apple last night had ship in 5-7 weeks. Now is says ships in 3-4 weeks. I really wonder if all the negative talk about the ipad, Apple thought "ok this is not going to sell well, lots not make that many initially and see how it goes." That is a catch 22 with business - either you make too little for demand or you make to many and you are sitting on stock; thus you then have to drop prices just to liquidate and get rid of them.

Let's hope production ramps up soon. I need the camera kit, vga cable. and the company I am ordering my ultimate case from, just started taking pre-orders for a mid-late june ship date. So I been storing my ipad in the original box. Really want my case as that aluminum can be a little slippery when moving around on the couch or the dog decides it is lap time.

Even Apple's case is out of stock with a ship of 3-4 weeks.

The case I am ordering:

Best Buy in Ottawa

Just came back from a Best Buy in Ottawa (St-Laurent). They received between 5 and 10 units of each models... There was about half a dozen people in line.

Lot's of them were new Mac owners! All of them are going iPhone, iPad & iMac combo... For each sale that the iPad "steals" from a MB, it's going toward an iMac. Looking very good for Apple.

I have to admit I'm surprised how quickly the iPad is taking off. I thought it would succeed, but only when a big wave of new iPad specific apps arrived. It seems to be a roaring success even without them.

There are tons of ipad specific apps and more just keep coming. I want them all :p But seriously, I have 23 ipad specific ones now, 20 of the iphone / ipod touch just added ipad functionality - so it just keeps getting better and better.

Interesting!

You probably can get an iMac & iPad for not a whole lot more than a top-end MBP on its own, so that's actually quite a good combo if you know you won't be doing any heavy-duty work on the road.

Wheeeeee.... Wheeeeeeeee

My! Precious!

There might be lots out there, but not a huge number of 'killer apps', that would almost entice you to buy an iPad just for them.

I could be wrong, being on the outside of the iPad-ecosystem (damn you, US-centre Apple! :p )

Yeah, my MBP is 3 years old now, so was wanting to upgrade it. But the iPad will fill a big chunk of what I use my MBP for, except it's much more convenient and portable. That leaves the heavy duty stuff (in may case, software development), which would really benefit from a bigger screen. So ... I've switched from wanting a new MBP, to wanting an iPad / iMac combo. Should be awesome!

And well done Apple on getting me to part with even more cash... :p

So we're in the same boat, as it were. I'm quietly hoping the Mac Pro update will be epic so I could just get a massive lcd screen and a 3d projector...but thennnn I wondered if I could justify a MacBook Air as well as an iPad on top of that. The iPad looks like something I'd keep on the coffee table in the living room whereas my mb air/mac pro/imac would be on my desk.
What would swing it for me is if there were a whole bunch of killer iPad apps that I couldn't live without...something I'm hoping are only weeks away from appearing on the app store.

Obviously, if I had all the money in the world I'd just buy the whole lot and save myself the burden of having to live within my means.

They STILL believe it failed.
They live in their own minds...
They need a hobby (aside from internet porn and video games).

Haters still cling to the hopes that Zune is killing iPod and that the iPhone is failing due to some other product being on the market. They believe the Dell tablet will destroy the iPad. It's ridiculous: who cares? They must not enjoy their computers so much, since they hate other computers they don't use (so they say).

Or they believe that Apple products are touched by the finger of God and all of the other products are just ******.

£700 outlay? why not spend £400 and use it as the media consumption toy that it was originally designed to be?

A '£400 media consumption toy'? If you've already got a TV, a computer, a hifi and a games console can you see why some people find it superfluous or difficult to justify.

I want one to use as a mobile computer for on-the-road server maintenance and website work instead of carting around a laptop. Unfortunately so far it's a task better suited by a £200 netbook since there's no multitasking and file management is a joke.

I'm actually hoping Microsoft and Apple start working even closer together as I'm not entirely anti-Microsoft. They have some great software. I also welcome competitors entering the tablet market, we could see some really great products joining the iPad. Also, competition means the next iPad won't just be a subtle update, it will have to keep up and surpass rival tablets. ;)

.... Epic FAIL! {Ballmer holding dead product}
Great photo of Fester,... holding the Slate so carefully and lovingly -- so proud of the wonderful rip off that was the HP Slate.

So funny that it got killed. Much have been a very amazing product. :D

Many people have a "herd" mentality. But hey, if they like their $500+ 9-inch iphone (minus the phone, camera, and portability), then more power to them.

You do realize that you're in the herd of people who think that they're not in a herd? Not buying something because it's popular is the same (psychologically) as buying something because it's popular - in both cases you're reacting to the crowd. Which is fine, but please avoid reacting to the crowd and then telling us how you don't react to the crowd.

This of course is great news for stock owners, like me, but I do feel a bit ashamed after reading this: "Entry-level line workers at Foxconn's factory in Longhua earn just over 900 yuan ($131.80) per month before overtime and bonuses, said Zhu Fuquan, a production supervisor for the company."
Thank you for that. It's nice to see some folks still have a working conscience that hasn't been completely clouded by giddiness and greed. I don't begrudge Apple's amazing success in recent years, but I am appalled at how their contracted workers are treated and the extremely poor wages they receive for their efforts. You really have no idea how refreshing it is to read a post like yours amid all the mindless whooping and hollering.

I do not like the term "killer app" Killer app is a definition in your own mind, as to how you do your work, and what you are looking to do with the ipad. I am just saying there are lots of apps, more keep coming, and some major companies like Mariner, Omni group, Cisco, and others have and are still coming out with apps. plus there are many indies that are creating very nice apps.

The store is getting so full, so not only am I faced with "Do I really want this, and "am I really going to use this"; I am also faced with "ok this what I need, now which one do I buy.."

Life on the ipad is looking good.

IMO The app store needs to be cleaned up. I am glad for the categories and for the power search, but we need a further breakdown:

1. Project planning and Management
2. To Do's and check lists.
3. Word Processors and notebooks
4. Spreadsheets
5. Simple picture editing
6. advanced picture editing
7. Remote Desktops, VNC, connectivity apps
8. Printing apps
10. mail management apps

I am no into games that much, but I heard the same problem when people are looking for them..

Just having a title and keys words is not returning results you would expect, and I am sure there are other apps that may have done more than what I want or better than what I chose; just could not find them due to searches missing them. Some are jut not titled appropriately for what they do.

There are some things in this world which I will never understand, one of them is waiting in line for some hyped product which will be available for immediate purchase in person or online couple of days later. This is some kind of fetish.

Live and let live of course but still, I do not understand how one can be so reckless with his precious life time.

This may not apply to YOU per say but think about it. Most kids and adults love being the first "kid" on the block with a new toy, it's fun and exciting. Why take that away from people?
I remember when the iPhone came out. Even after a year I would only see just a few people around with one, then I bought mine and it was nice to have that "first kid on the block" feeling and I didn't feel like I was part of the masses. Now it sucks because not a day goes by that I don't see the iPhone in somebody's hands, it's become another common cell phone and it's no big deal when you see somebody with one.

Don't be such a killjoy just because you don't understand the excitement of other people. :p

AMEN! People like to think themselves as special if they rebel.

Funny comment considering that, by most reports, a good percentage of iPad buyers are not Mac users.

But hey, whatever gets you through the night, bud.

... iPod & iPhone were Apples out of the dark of the pure ad-agencies existence. They gained Apple access to all those not-Mac-users, nothing-to-do-with-computers, lifestyle-chic people. I see no difference between them and old applefanboys and girls. Apple products are nothing everyone can or should afford, still decandent and elitist as they always were, claiming the opposite. It's not envy, it's rather disgust...

You can't always blame the company - especially in a communist country like China. they have different laws and wealth distribution system. Because of that, countries like China, Taiwan (which is still free), Vietnam, etc have become cheap labor for us. It is because of American Laws that companies here pay so well, and employees are treated better. We also have a free enterprise system (well that may be changing), where-as many countries do not.

I once worked with someone from Moracco. He told me that in his old country, all I/T work for every industry was done out of central "data-houses" and his salary and hours was set by the government, not the company. Thus why he moved to the US.

Now I am not from Moracco and do not know much about their economy, so I could only take what he said at face value.

Just like many people told me that Canada has a 6-week manatory vacation system. you get 6 weeks of vacation a year, that you have to use. I know many of my Canadian clients have told me more than once, "I am going to be out for 3 weeks" or "I will be on vacation for the next month"

Must be nice....

They STILL believe it failed.
They live in their own minds...
They need a hobby (aside from internet porn and video games).

The iPad ironically is almost the perfect platform for those hobbies. :) Maybe they need to re-evaluate their 'needs' and give it a second look.

I don't know who told you that but that's a lie. Many places start you at 3 weeks (I work for the gov't and I won't get 4 weeks until I've worked there for 8 years...). My girlfriend had a job last year that only gave her 2 weeks / yr (not a minimum wage job or anything...it was a good one, just not enough vacation).

I've heard of people starting with 4weeks but that's pretty unusual

(Btw I'm in Ottawa, On)

... Steves pockets. Very soon it's not gonna be cool at all to have something not supporting Flash. Androids are gonna crushya!

Apple should be forced putting a big red sticker on these toys, saying "NO FLASH SUPPORT! LIMITED WEB-EXPERIENCE."

Really? It sounds to me, the more Apple gear sells the more it becomes not cool to support flash.

Any estimations on how long the in store availability of the ipads will last in the UK and whether they 've stocked the Heathrow store?

"I wanted to touch it as soon as possible. I felt real excitement when it was finally in my hands,"

I foresee a long life of involuntary celibacy for this young man.
