This is actually a very common use case. With iOS 9, we can finally do split screen so I can have my YouTube up on one side and let's say I'm using browsing a website on Safari on the other screen. I want to cut and paste something into an email so now I'm going back and forth again.

The point is that we've become accustomed to having multiple layered windows since the 90s. I don't think we want to give that up for unless it was for a small screen like an iPhone or iPad.

With the Pro, this issue will be very become more glaring.

Edit: you know what I see a lot of people doing for multitasking is to have some apps running on a iPad while pulling up an iPhone to send a text. A MacBook can do all of it with one screen but an iOS device can't.
But.. You're only actually using one of those things at a time? Other than the by video? Flicking between FB and an email and messages isn't really that different to flicking your eyes from one to another?
but the question is.. why not if you want to?
(currently watching the Blue Jay game in one window, while replying to this, while I also have an SSH terminal beside me while I keep an eye on some log files scroll by.

All on a tablet. (but, I can also do this on my OSx mac, and believe it or not, My phone). I CAN"T do it on iOS.

Why? Cause it can.

its just one of those "your mileage might vary" things.
I think there's something to be said for KISS in ui design, and if we start having movable "Windows" it's going to start getting messy.

I agree some people want this and that's cool, but I look at my desktop with its millions of things going on at once and it doesn't exactly help me do the one or two tasks I'm actually concentrating on. I like my tablet to be a focused, streamlined affair. As long as they can background process and be flicked back and forth that's fine by me.

Then again I have family members who always have >100 browser tabs open. People are weird.

as I said. it's one of those "however you work best" situations.

But it doesn't hurt to GIVE the option, if people don't use it, than to refuse to give anyone the option. It plays to the lowest common denominator, which can end up being too restrictive for some users.

now before anyone labels me fanboy :p cause it innevitively happens. I love using OSx, I love using WIndows, I'm OK with Android. I'm really just a critical person. But iOS to me has always been far too limiting on anything larger than a phone because of this forced single window only, no filesystem access "dumb user" mentality. SO putting it on a larger tablet that your'e calling "pro" and hoping to gain real traction feels like putting training wheels on a motorbike. I don't doubt the hardware in anyway. iPads are my favourite designed hardware.

iOS9 might change that a bit with split screen, just don't currently have a device that will run it. (might steal the iPad i bought my dad to play with for a while when he upgrades it)

True. Everyone is different. The important thing is that the UI allows choice. If you want to run one window at a time and single task, you can do it with a desktop OS. You can also multitask many windows with things happening in the background.

IOS doesn't give you that choice.

IOS 9 only allows two apps to be shown simultaneously. Not three.
2 apps open with a youtube window playing a video in ios 9? On an ipad air 2 for sure you can do this. You can almost do this on an ipad air 1 if you just want to hear the youtube audio in the background

I have an iPad Air 2 running 9.1 and the YouTube app pauses every time I swipe in a new application. In fact, it doesn't even support side by side.

YouTube background might work with third party apps but it's hit or miss.

Again, this isn't an elegant solution at all. It took Apple nine releases to get side by side multitasking. If they want the iPad Pro to be a real productivity machine that enterprise users will leave their PC or Mac for, they will need to go further.

I think the PIP for youtube functionality may be based off of the youtube app dev's updating the app. I don't know what the technical requirements are but safari embedded youtube vids can be played using the PIP functionality also 3rd party apps to stream youtube in the background have existed in the app store for years. All that being said watching youtube videos while trying to be productive...

So more jumping through hoops? What happened to it just works? This is why it won't work in the enterprise.

Multitasking is still limited compared to a real OS.

Not certain this is the right place for this question, can you run two for he same app side by side? For example if you wanted two word documents open (or pages) at the same time would it allow you?

Nope. Another limitation. I suppose you could run two different apps with the same document. But then there's no file system.

I think what people really mean when they talk about real multitasking is that they can't have more than one window open in ios at a time which even now you can do in ios 9. That being said it does "just work" just not how you want it to work right?

It's not about me. This is the way computers have worked since the 90s. The industry has solved all of these problems decades ago.

Why do he have to go through all this again?

Why do you own an iPad again?
I love my iPad. But it is my secondary device. When I need to do real multitasking or real work, I use a PC or Mac.

We're talking about the Pro which is targeted at enterprise users to replace their PC or Mac with this device. People just aren't going to do it with all of these limitations.

No argument there although for my line of work the ipad doubles as an additional display(wireless) and "quasi" drawing tablet to my macbook and with ios 9 unless I need to use adobe apps the ipad has been getting used a lot more.

I mean that's a complete assumption right? People have been saying apple products are going to not succeed for years. That being said I think the "Pro" was meant specifically for iPad users and not the industry. I may have missed the part of the keynote where they specifically said the ipad pro was going to replace PC's and Mac's for enterprise users.

May be too big for some, and i bet it won't sell as well as the Air by any means, but it has its place. Don't expect every consumer buy this product.

You didn't miss anything during the keynote. But why is Apple partnering with IBM and Cisco if not to target the enterprise?

The reason the Pro exists is because of the Surface Pro and other PC OEMs who are all building hybrid devices. They are attempting to combine the laptop and tablet. If they succeed, there's no reason to buy an iPad. This is what Apple is afraid of and the iPad Pro is their response.

The same thing happened to the iPad mini as phablets became popular.

Apple wants all of us to own three devices. Their competitors are trying to create hybrids so we only need to own two.

Right now, the iPad Pro doesn't fit the bill. No professional is going to replace their laptop for this.

You bring up some valid points although there are definitely some professions where the ipad(pro) could replace most of what they'd need a laptop for and even then it's not a complete replacement and is not compatible within many workplaces systems.

Well that is a bummer. Having multiple windows of the same application open while probably niche can be useful when you want to use it. As an example, being able to have Arstechnica window open for the liveblog for the keynote, and having MacRumors open for the forums at the same time.

I guess the iPad Pro could in theory be seen along with the pen, a first stage of a full blown OS X..

If u think about it, all the pieces are there..

- larger display adequate for OS X
- Apple pen for precision pointing
- physical keyboard/case.

It would become like the surface, minus HDMI port etc.. and since the resolution is higher than a Mac laptop anyway, it would be perfect.

The MacBook experiment with USB-C shows the likely evolution of the iPad Pro. Either ARM gains USB-C or iPad goes Intel. I just say Inwas quite surprised not to see USB-C here.
