I do like the rather clever manipulation of this story's title, it has outsold the Surface, so NOT the Surface PRO of the Surface BOOK then..
And then all you get is shipment stats... and no breakdown in those of the Surface / Surface Pro / Surface Book. I would argue that the Surface Pro and Book have outsold the iPad Pro personally.
My understanding from the linked article is that the iPad Pro outsold all Surface devices combined, which they estimate to have shipped 1.6 million units during the quarter (compared to an estimated iPad Pro volume of 2 million).

ouch.. -24% growth! Welcome to the post tablet era?
maybe ALL of us already own a tablet ....

The Surface Pro blows away the iPad Pro. No contest.
Note even close to that.
Especially in sales ...

mkay....

The title says the Ipad Pro outsold the surface, cool....

The supporting evidence is for tablet says, not model specific.

Reading the actual source material (http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS40990116), the real reference is

"We believe Apple sold just over two million iPad Pros while Microsoft sold around 1.6 million Surface devices" guess there is not much story with a 400 000 difference...

Maybe focus on one story here....?
It's something like 25% more, and we are speaking about a single model versus several Surface versions.
Since the iPad Pro is considered somewhat a "niche" product, I'd call it a success, in a recessing market...

Surface ? As usual an half baked solution by Microsoft.

They compare the iPad Pro to the Surface Pro sales, but I don't see any Surface Pro sales numbers? Or am I missing something?
They are too low to appear on that sheet. Under 2 millions.

OS X on a touchscreen would be something to compare to Surface Pro sales ... if they would just make it so! As it is for now, the SP4 is basically at the same pricepoint as the 13" Retina so that would be a nice comparison, but touch :(. Then again, the Dell 2-in-1s with touch are 1/3 the price ... what a crazy market.

Good 'ol IDC. The same firm that said Windows Phone would overtake iOS in marketshare by 2015.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/230151/idc_windows_phones_to_overtake_iphone_ios_by_2015.html
Hold on: they are so close to that ... :D

So.....

16.1 million Ipads sold Q4 and 65.9 million all manufacturer tablets sold.

Of which 2 million are Ipad Pro and Surface 1.6.

SO the ipad pro was about 12% of Ipads sold in Q4.

The Ipad Pro and Surface pro sold about 5.4% of all tablets sold in that quarter (3.6 million out of 65.9).

Conclusion - The tablet pro concept is struggling for both microsoft and Apple.....
For Apple is just one model out of a differentiated offer. For Microsoft is the one and only ... not selling very well.
But like Windows Phone, keep having faith in Microsoft as an hardware manufacturer. They are so good at that...

Not real surprising, the surface pro line is even more niche than the ipad pro. I absolutely love mine and don't regret getting it over the iPad pro one bit. The overall quality and feel is outstanding- it seems like a gadget from the future. I did finally get to mess with an ipp at the verizon store over the weekend and it was pretty impressive aside from the home screen looking totally ridiculous with the huge gaps between icons. The fluidity of the UI was the best I've ever seen from any device.

Between my note 4, macbook pro, and surface pro 4, I've been enjoying the best of what every platform has to offer. Can't ask for more than that! :)

"Desktop OS". What a faux argument. Please define "Desktop OS".

(Hint: You can't because it doesn't exist. An OS is an OS. iPad Pro runs just as much of a "Desktop OS" as a MacBook)

A desktop OS, for practical definition. An OS that runs on x86 architecture.
The surface should be compared to computers that have x86 architecture.

I haven't received my SP4 yet but I'd have to agree with everything you said, especially on the IPP. iOS is a portable operating system operating on a not so portable device. If OS X isn't an option, why not take the time and make iOS look less ridiculous on the home screen.

Really? would $100 cheaper really stop you from buying it? I mean, your sig shows that you have a Mac Pro, a 30" and 23" Cinema Display, MacBook ProS, iPhoneS and various others of Apple's expensive products. $100 doesn't sound like it's gonna break you. ;)
I think the iPad Pro is too pricey by at least 150$.

You want an OS not meant for touch, with no programs that would be good with touch, to be out on something that is primarily a tablet?
you basically described a Surface :D
I tried the Surface recently. It's so bad. I wouldn't own one if it were given to me for free. Only an apple hater or microsoft lover with no objectivity would want a surface.
there are quite a few here ;)

Who knew so many surface fans would be hanging around a Mac forum?

Seriously, if I needed a Windows laptop I'd probably buy a surface instead of a normal laptop. For travel, the thing beats anything hands-down. If I needed a demo platform it'd be perfect, since it's easy to connect to a projector and you can run vmware to run anything.

It's not really a tablet, it's a flat PC. Although it does make you think: what the heck is a tablet anyway? Is an iPad Pro and a Surface really comparable? When they were running RT it made more sense to say a surface was like an iPad. Now a surface just a slim laptop/slimtop ie: yet another windows form factor.

I'd buy a MBA or rMBP and put Parallels on it...

I see the iPad Pro and Surface as two different types of products. This comparison is not apples to apples.

When the iPad Pro came out, everyone criticised it for not having x y and z features that the Surface Pro had. This article is presumably answering those users.

Completely agree, love mine - it's a sole windows machine in an OSX/iOS household, iPad never gets touched now!

Also Completely agree. I have been an Apple fanboy since I can remember. Picked up an i7, 512GB Surface Pro 3 on black friday for $999, haven't looked back. We don't touch our iPads anymore. People at work are absolutely shocked to see me (THE Mac Guy) with a Windows device.

Apple has greatly lost their luster with me lately.

Even the standard iPad iOS has lots of empty space. Now the icons are more than an inch a part on the home screen, let alone the fact that a folder still only fits icons in a 4 x 4 grid! It's ridiculous how misused iOS is on an iPad!

Yes, just like how people with 23"+ monitors enjoy cramming their desktop with hundreds of icons! All that space, wouldn't want it to go to waste!

Good point, a 175% year on year rise. Amazon is kicking ass!
With a £49.99 tablet. That's like looking at the "motor vehicle" market and finding someone who sells more scooters than Ferrari sells cars.

I personally think the iPad Pro is selling because it's a bigger iPad which is nicer to use.

Allot of people say the Surface Pro blows the iPad Pro out of the water, but people are only looking at it from a productivity and professional stand point. If you aren't trying to run Photoshop and illustrator and just want something to play games and watch movies on, the iPad Pro is a better tablet IMO. The most pro thing most people do is Office which is what the iPad Pro also has.

I'd choose the Surface Pro 4 any day of the week(In fact I might be buying one to the supplement my rMBP), but from the point of view from someone who just wants a bigger iPad, I certainly see the appeal over the Surface.

Objectivity. Quite ironic you using that word.

Many forum members can view products with actual objectivity. They also buy products based on their own preferences. Believe it or not, good products hail from locations other than Cupertino.

Apple hater or Microsoft lover. Binary much?

It can do what you want.

There's an App called Astropad that does that.

Not really. It's one of the third party apps I was alluding to that does one thing but not the other. Astropad adds Apple pencil functionality, but it only mirrors the display, not extends. The applications I use and my workflow require an extended display most of the time. Also I've read mixed reviews regarding Astropad's lag.

Or you're like 90% of working professionals who have a work issued laptop/desktop and don't need a personal computer for "productivity".

I agree, the iPad Pro is attractive because it improves upon the already excellent user experience of the iPad Air/Mini.
