In the US many retailers extend their return period starting in November because of the upcoming holiday gift purchasing season. This allows for those who purchase to not have to worry when holding onto them as gifts during the holidays.
No Apple encourages people to return for the device they want or return if not happy with device.
I did the same, ordered the other day through B&H. Today I stopped into the store not long after they opened as I figured I'd check out the iPad Pro and found out about the shortage of Pencils and smart keyboards.. Ended up walking out with my 128GB WiFi space gray Pro and nothing else. I'm keeping the keyboard and pencil on order through B&H. Figure I might actually get them faster that way than if I order now through Apple... I'll keep monitoring stock at the couple Apple stores around me though. Maybe I'll get lucky. I probably shouldn't have picked up the iPad while I was there, but I figured what they hey... I was there and they had one so...
Normally you have 14 days with Apple, but due to the holidays, they extend the return window to Jan 08 for purchase between 11/01 and 12/25.
They'll be resold or repackaged and used as replacements later on for those who run into trouble down the line.
I went to Apple store and they Clarified this. Yes, the return date has been extended from 14 days to January 8th but after the 14 day period, you can't get cash or return back to your credit card. It will be processed as an Apple Gift Card.
So Please keep this in mind.
Wow!!! Remind me never to move to your city. Here in Spokane I've never seen lines at the Apple store. I walked in, was greeted immediately, was asked what they could do for me, I told them I was there for the iPad Pro but that I'd like to see one first. They told me there were none on display, but because of the January 8 return policy I could get it and return it if I wanted to. While I was chatting with the guy, someone brought my iPad Pro out, and I could have left five minutes after I got there. (I had lots of questions, so stuck around for a bit.)
Lots of retailers in the U.S. accept returns, with no more reason needed than that you were not happy with it.
I wonder that myself.

Mine arrived today the gold 128 GB WIFI only model. Love it..... waiting for the Logitech smart keyboard case tomorrow, pencil will be a couple weeks...

Mine arrived with flaws in there metal back. I used the $20 discount. If I order again with discount, will they hold the order thinking I'm trying to get two with the discount? And I should be able to transfer T-Mobile plan to the new one when I finally get it?

Yes they are real trilobites. I am a retired geologist and paleontologist and have a large collection of trilobites of which a few can be seen behind my hardware.

If you do it as an exchange, the damaged one for a different one, there should be no money involved, and I can't imagine why your carrier would not transfer the plan over.
Just my best guess.
I called on this and of course they don't mention the gift card credit.
Ouch! I think Apple should feel a little more pain for screwing up this rollout
That seems odd to me, that's not really an extended return policy in my book.
