It's easy to avoid the Apple aggravation by just never buying first revision products. Happened with the iphone, the original with the 2G and OS 1.0 was pathetic, and only with OS 3.0 and 3GS it turned into a fully featured phone, and that's when I bought mine. I'll be considering the tablet when they double the capacity at the same price, by then they will have it jailbroken, and the app store will have a lot of ipad specific apps to get.

For those of you living in a cave that don't need flash, I guess none of you visit youtube (the iphone youtube client is a joke, doesn't play most content), facebook, cnn, collegehumor, spike, g4tv etc. It's main purpose is video, I could care less about flash games.

Mobile Flash is slow, battery hungry and knowing Adobe it would be crashy. Here's how I want my Flash content on my iPad:

1. Videos: just use H264 and HTML5, or native apps like YouTube (with Hulu supposedly forever on the way too).

2. Games: ported to native apps, as many have been. (They can still be free and ad supported if people wish.)

3. Obnoxious banner ads: replace with "harmless" images, please.

4. Navigation menus: almost unheard-of anyway these days, but a non-Flash alternate can be provided. (My own site has Flash nav, but on iPhone you get a nice CSS-animated alternative.)

I'm a Flash developer, and its rapid-development toolset, while buggy and aggravating, is still quicker than hand-coding complex vector animation/interactivity. I'd rather see it evolve than die. If it weren't so bad on other platforms I'd be happy to see it on iPod/iPad. But the problems are real.

I can't think of the last time Mobile Safari crashed. I wonder why...

Woah, wait a minute. Most people are saying Flash is "ubiquitous" and on nearly every web page.

Of course, mostly in the form of annoying ads.

Not having a flash plugin to render ads and popups is theft of content! Shame on Apple!
Eh? I assume the quote was in reference to torrents.

Forgive me for being ignorant on this issue, but I don't understand the fuss over flash.

I'd love to have it on the iPad. There are websites that I go to, and they have flash. It would be nice to have.

What is HTML5? Will you be able to open a flash plug-in with HTML5? Why is flash a battery hog? Does it make the computer sluggish?

I really don't know.

Get over it. If they don't want Flash they don't want it. No reason to make a post such as that due to one piece of Software. What do you want Flash for anyway? Give me a specific reason... If you say Hulu... who cares about Hulu. Ever heard of Torrents. I would rather watch my movies and TV shows without commercials and interruption.

That's not true. I love Hulu. I can watch instantly whatever I like. For torrents you have to wait and most of the time it's slow.

I have so many macs, this one would be a sweet addition to my livingroom lifestyle. I wouldn't care about flash. I can check this on all other machines, I just know my 5 year old wouldn't love it;) she plays Nickjr.com videos on her iMac.

Flash will be the biggest development platform for the iPhone/iPod/iTouch in a matter of months:

http://blogs.adobe.com/flashplatform/2010/01/building_ipad_apps.html

Developement platform is ENTIRELY different then allowing flash content to run. Adobe is using LLVM and a special intermediate layer to translate flash and actionscript into native ARM/iPod/iPad code so that it runs NATIVE on the device. For intents and purposes an application that was developed using flash is no longer a "flash" application.

I am not all that excited about the device. It is nice and if I was still in school I might buy it to put all my texts books on (assuming they existed) but otherwise I don't care about it all that much. A little to limiting for my needs right now.

The still photos on apple.com about ipad are also show the same time = "9:41 AM" .... They can run so many app at same minute....
This ipad IS NOT READY YET!

The fact of the matter is that Flash will cut into the profit$ of the App Store.

Apple does not give a F about user experience, battery life, and all the other pointless reasons not to include Flash, with the option to turn it off for the few who don't want it.

It's all about $$$!

Why are people still surprised that companies are in business to make money? I think that Apple should just give everyone in America a free iPad. That would REALLY prove that they don't care about $$$. How long have you been alive dude? You sound like a baby.

This is off topic but I am assuming this thing has the new anti-smug screen that the 3GS has?

Oh good lord if the iPhone 3GS really had an anti-smug screen these forums would be a lot more civil! :)

I assume however you meant anti-smudge.....

Honestly...

I want to be able to browse the net using web STANDARDS!

Apple can simply make Flash OPTIONAL just like it is on any other platform...

End of the story - talking about such ridiculous things any further is below anyones level really.

Dude, Flash is not a web standard. Get your facts straight or don't bother posting if plan on making it up to sound good.

Marked as negative again...

As said in previous thread I will mark each iPad news (regardless of what they are) as negative UNTIL Apple pull finger out of their ****** and allows Flash player to be installed...

Hezuz!

i bet that gets 'em! Hell i know nothing upsets Steve personally as much as a single negative macrumors vote.

...i got a free iMac that way.

I have determined that Flash is very commonly used on the web. Therefore, any internet device should support it. You have to cater to *what's already there*, and flash is already there. Hence, I need to see it.

Make it happen.

if they do support flash eventually, I'd hope/wish you could toggle it on/off. bad flash makes machines (both pc & mac) sluggish, I think we can all agree on that. if they choose to never support flash I can't say I blame them. every time a site loads and it is only flash i cringe and sometimes just close it anyway.

Exactly.

Give people an option.

Sometimes apple likes like the father that doesn't think his kid is ready to go play in the real world, lol.

Why DID Jobs navigate to a flash site during the keynote...?

To get those lazy web developers to abandon Flash. He is showing them what their web sites will look like to the most desirable web users on Earth. People with iPads are the exact demographic advertizers want. People who will buy "anything" and have to much money. And you can't reach those people if you use Flash. Even the dumiest web designer will figure this out real soon. They will want to be able to tell potential advertises "we don't use flash."

Keep in mind NYT specifically stated they've redesigned the entire site to include an iPad specific version. So this Flash content everyone keeps talking about might not be Flash at all and could very easily be done with any number of other web technologies supported by the new mobile safari browser.

The Apple ad video is not false advertising... yet. :)

Great news! Now all we need is for the other 75% of the Internet that uses Flash to redesign witrh HTML5 to accommodate the iPad and to keep Apple from loosing profit$.

Apple isn’t trying to replace Flash with its own proprietary thing. They’re replacing it with H.264 and HTML5. This is good for everyone but Adobe.
Even good for Adobe, they can sell Flash now, and then the same designer with other export modules for HTML5 and H.264 again. Cash in twice
Oh and the best they will not need to take care of the legacy stuff they produced ;)

The still photos on apple.com about ipad are also show the same time = "9:41 AM" .... They can run so many app at same minute....
This ipad IS NOT READY YET!

Because as we all know, it is easier to set up the photo with the content you want on the iPad than it is to take a lot of modeling shots and drop the screen in later when you decide what you want....

Stupid. It isn't just for political discussions.

Eh... with HTML 5 coming and H.264 video, there won't be much point to Flash in the future. So I'm okay if they keep it standards based.

That's a LOOOOOOONG ways away, though. Flash has been around for years and still Apple isn't getting with it. Not a huge deal, but enough to disappoint the average user....who this device is aimed at.

And don't think HTML5 will be immune to advertiser's annoying shenanigans, either. Which is what a lot of peeps are whining about when it comes to Flash. That and intense system resource usage.

First off. Do not EVER infer that I am a lier.

Secondly I am a retired Chef.

Also I just looked over ALL of your posts since you joined and they have ALL been " FIX THIS", "I HATE THAT".

I should get a time-out for my words but you. I'm guessing you're 15 or so. Should be banned to Redmond.

i'm 45 and i have a clue... go buy gruel....

Hezuz!

I just hope they warn us before they pull out their finger.

P.S. No one cares.

Honestly...

I don't want to be rude or anything but arguing about web STANDARD is frekn stupid!!!

And why are you asking me such a questions!?!?

Ok - I am in art, design and photographic business and well over 80% of my contacts (as in artists, designers, photographers etc...) HAVE FLASH BASED SITES!!!

Is this hard to understand!?!?!

Meaning, using this awesome tool made for best browsing experience ever - I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO MY JOB which is keeping an eye on all those guys and their latest work...

I personally don't give a damn about video or Hulu!

I want to be able to browse the net using web STANDARDS!

Apple can simply make Flash OPTIONAL just like it is on any other platform...

End of the story - talking about such ridiculous things any further is below anyones level really.

And is google able to reliable index their sites, all the flash content? i don't think so

iPhone use does not equal iPad use

I do not want Flash on my iPhone. Ever. I will not watch Hulu or any other video site on that device. I agree with a previous post, I have missed Flash on the iPhone maybe twice.

I also wish Flash would just go away....I'm all for open standards.

However, the iPad is a new class of device. I could totally see watching Hulu on this thing, that would make it a killer device. I have a Mac Pro and an iPhone. I have thought about getting a laptop for portability, but even they are just a little too much for what I would want to do. This device, if it wants to replace a netbook, needs to support flash, as much as I hate to admit that.

I am on the fence as to whether I will buy the iPad because the sites I do visit use at least a little flash, and this seems like the perfect portable, casual browsing experience. If it supported flash, I would pre-order as soon as I could.
