Perhaps Apple was worked with the New York Times and other major sites for custom iPad versions of their sites that use an alternative to flash such as HTML5.

Hear Hear, flash has been a major cause of browser crashes.... time for a change to html5

I also have no problems with Apples attitude in not using flash I prefer something else which is controlled by apple and not adobe.

Why DID Jobs navigate to a flash site during the keynote...?

Because nearly every large, major website has flash. ESPN, CNN, MSNBC, NYT, and on and on and on. Sure on the iPhone some of those pages open an "iPhone specific" site that doesn't display flash but if the iPad is supposed to be a better browsing experience than a laptop (Job's own words) than I don't want mini-sites when I go to ESPN etc., I want the full page... and right now that means I need flash.

PS: Perhaps in a few years all these sites will be HTML5 and yes, that would be great. I will also just wait to buy an iPad until then.

Can someone please explain this to me (I'm being serious here)?

If you don't want Flash, can't you just choose to NOT install the plugin? Or is there some crazy backend programming in the browser that slows the browser down just for offering the option to install it?

Also, people keep complaining about how it hogs resources etc. I have a 13" MBP, a 24" Al iMac, and an 8 year old Dell desktop...and NEVER have I had an issue with flash bogging down any of my computers.

I was really excited about the iPad because I saw it as a great educational tool. My 2 year old son LOVES the iPod Touch. He can fully navigate it, and plays little educational apps (which just proves how easy to use the interface is).

The problem is...almost all educational games on the web are flash based.

So you're an iPad expert now? You've spent years preparing, planning, and studying the market for its release? You designed its internals and its software?

Yah, I prefer to trust that Apple has done their homework. Sure, they are stubborn about the Flash support, but can you imagine how negatively it would impact their product for Flash to run terribly on it? That wouldn't even be their fault, and they'd have no control over improving the situation other than cramming in heat-generating, battery-sucking electronics, just to support a "standard" that's not even open to community participation. It's one company's closed, proprietary platform. Take your complaints to Adobe, not Apple.

All excellent points, very well responded.

I guess this sums it up with most people I've talk to about the iPad.

Get over it. If they don't want Flash they don't want it. No reason to make a post such as that due to one piece of Software. What do you want Flash for anyway? Give me a specific reason... If you say Hulu... who cares about Hulu. Ever heard of Torrents. I would rather watch my movies and TV shows without commercials and interruption.

And torrents are illegal. Ever hear of copyright law and the right of people to be paid for their work?

Obviously you are correct. You are preaching to the wrong crowd though. They feel the need to defend Apple at all costs even at the risk of being ridiculous.

Flash sucks. It's bloatware. A resource-hog. Needs a plug in. Isn't ADA compliant (as in, handicap accessible, which all educational sites need to be), kills batters, and the only thing it's good for these days is cheesy cartoons and maybe Homestarrunner.

REAL web designers, all the big guns, all the gurus, almost all the ones at conferences and or designing the web for the future, 2.0 to web 3.0, are doing kickass things in javascript, jquery, AJAX, and other languages which pretty much blow flash out of the water for size, effort, and most importantly compliance. You really don't NEED to ever use flash for 99.5% of all the web sites ever made, ever. Period. No discussion. Fact. Deal with it whiners. It's a deadend. It's pointless. It was okay in the 90s, but technology has passed it, and that technology runs leaner, quicker, and is compliant on EVERY platform (though sometimes excepting versions if IE but IE sucks anyways and no designer worth his salt likes IE) which, that's the beauty of NOT using Flash, design once, deploy everywhere on any platform no needs for plugins or having pages drain your battery. It's a beautiful thing.

All the lame things it does overall are only being griped and wanting by 1. people who are clueless about how it's not necessary any more and 2. their lame developers stuck with the archaic knowledge of problematic "programming" [sic] language ActionScript.

I'm RELAXED AND DONE. I just hope everyone realizes that they did a horrible job on this and refuses to buy it until they GET IT RIGHT. VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET and DON'T BUY until they release a version THAT IS UP TO SNUFF. AGAIN... REAL WEB, FLASH, AND CAMERA.

Who let Steve Ballmer in? And btw P.M.S. is no thing to be making fun of.

Has Adobe gone on record as to WHY they can't improve Flash without Apple's support?

Maybe not officially, but I read a blog by some Adobe developer stating that the reason that Flash doesn't work well on Macs is that Apple won't release the required API's to the public that would allow for hardware acceleration. Apparently, this would allow the graphics card to decode Flash videos ... so my Macbook won't fire up the fans to 150% when I watch Hulu.

To me, I could care less either way. It's just a pissing match at this point.

Has Adobe gone on record as to WHY they can't improve Flash without Apple's support?
Daring Fireball has some info on this:
http://daringfireball.net/2010/01/apple_adobe_flash

According to Adobe, though, this is because they can’t. Here’s an entry from their Flash Player FAQ:

Q. Why is hardware decoding of H.264 only supported on the Windows platform?

A. In Flash Player 10.1, H.264 hardware acceleration is not supported under Linux and Mac OS. Linux currently lacks a developed standard API that supports H.264 hardware video decoding, and Mac OS X does not expose access to the required APIs. We will continue to evaluate when to support this feature on Mac and Linux platforms in future releases.

Adobe platform evangelist Lee Brimelow recently posted a weblog entry addressing this:

But let’s talk more about the Flash Player on the Mac. If it is not 100% on par with the Windows player people assume that it is all our fault. The facts show that this is simply not the case. Let’s take for example the question of hardware acceleration for H.264 video that we released with Flash Player 10.1. Here you can see some published results for how much the situation has improved on Windows. Unfortunately we could not add this acceleration to the Mac player because Apple does not provide a public API to make this happen. You can easily verify that by asking Apple. I’m happy to say that we still made some improvements for the Mac player when it comes to video playback, but we simply could not implement the hardware acceleration. This is but one example of stumbling blocks we face when it comes to Apple.

I know I'm just feeding a troll.. But ah well..

Your arguments are pathetic. You are childish and ignorant. "Don't buy it.. please." As many posts have mentioned, if the iPad is for you, get it, otherwise, don't. Perhaps you are still too young to understand the fact that others have different needs from you. In the meantime, a little **** would be useful.

Troll... HA! I've owned apple products FOREVER.

I've hated Microcrap.

Apple started going downhill when they got rid of matte screens and didn't care. Then there was the crippled iphone (which jailbreaking made into a real computer, for the most part).

I LOVE my jailbroken iphone. It does multitask WONDERFULLY. No thanks to apple!

The current IMAC I7's are lemons, according to everyone and they can't even ship them for 3 weeks they are so bad.

I need a new macbook pro, but they haven't announced any I7's/I5's yet (behind the curve here too).

And I was interested in the Ipad... was ready to have my socks blown off, but that went backwards! And it's crippled like my iphone was, sans camera... A JOKE.

Stop being fanboys and revolt already. Stop eating the gruel. It used to be gourmet meals, now it's turning into slop and we are being told by the chef it's magical slop, just eat it, no big deal.

I think the only reason apple put a matte screen option back on the 17" MB pro was because of the bitching... so I bitch in the hope that people will follow and hopefully force them to serve gourmet food once again. That is my hope.

Don't buy this tablet as it is now. It sends them the message that we believe  gruel is fine and that the emperor is wearing clothes.

Eh... with HTML 5 coming and H.264 video, there won't be much point to Flash in the future. So I'm okay if they keep it standards based.

Maan, please stop comparing HTML5 with Flash, and saying HTML5 will replacing Flash. Those 2 technologies are quite different.

It's ok though, if you compared how they handle video for browser. But Flash isn't just for video. I repeat, Flash is NOT just for video.

Much more than that. Look how Flash games like Texas Hold'em Poker, FarmVille, or other Flash based games on the net (Facebook, Myspace, etc) being access (enjoyed) by >5milion "casual" gamers daily! That is lots of money there.

Can HTML5 replace Flash for that matter?

HTML is hardly static, either. We've already had HTML1, 2, 3 & 4 before we got to 5, y'know...

Of course they will not be static. But how many years between each "version"? AFAIK, there are still web developers who uses HTML4 transitional for their homepage!

With Flash being proprietary and in-house only development, it doesn't need other parties to support it's technology. Their users ARE the one who support it (by installing a plugin though, and currently it is slow on the Mac and Linux).

On the other hand, HTML which R&D'd by a consortium should create standard between browsers/companies. See how each browsers handle HTML differently. Gives headache to web developers because it's very hard to please all the browsers. And when big company like MS or Apple didn't agree at some point, the HTML technology will progressing slowly.

I get both sides of the argument... some think Flash is a scourge of the Internet, others see it as necessary. My objection to the iPad (and iPhone) is that Apple insists it knows best and gives you no way around the limitations without hacks (and Adobe, for example, ain't going to release Flash Player as a jailbreak app).

I'm very sympathetic to Apple with regard to the iTunes store and so on, but why can't they give developers and users a way to sideload apps on their own if they WANT to bypass the system?

If Apple wants to keep Flash out of the store, fine... but let Adobe put their own download on their own site and let users manually install it IF THEY WANT TO!

The only thing we really need Flash for is playing video, especially on the iPhone. HTML5 will not be a valid replacement for another 2-3 years at least.

However, as the photographer above mentioned, Flash is used by 90% or more of the photography industry to showcase images. It's the only game in town for this, and is basically a requirement if you are building a web gallery. HTML5 won't solve this problem. (Ruby on Rails might, but someone would still need to build a standard evironment for photographers to use, as they have with Flash).

With the larger screen of the iPad, not being able to view these sites is going to be a much bigger issue on the iPad than it was on the iPhone, since the screen is a suitable size for doing it.

Apple would be smart to allow Flash video to play, while still blocking the security issues Flash has.

It's gotta be in 4.0 thats coming out this summer. If it's not and they doctored those images.... not good

Yeah, like Apple could be subject to a class action suit for deceptive marketing... which they would lose. And Apple knows this.

Which is why we should be 90% confident that 4.0 will support Flash.

While I don't think the iPad is going to support flash when it's released, I *do* think what we saw in the keynote is not the finished product. In looking at some of the hands on videos, it's evident that there's still work that is being done so we might see a few unexpected features when it finally ships.

For example, I'm a little worried about the multi-user aspect of it. Will both my wife and I be able to check our email on it? However, I've seen a couple of instances where there is a "Profiles" option under the Settings menu, and apparently, the Apple staff working the demo units wasn't able to comment on what it was for.

Right! and also i wonder what the little sign right of the "Slide to unlock" bar should be. could be a "change profile" button or so, never really understood what it should be, and did not find close ups, but it would make sense now

Flash will be the biggest development platform for the iPhone/iPod/iTouch in a matter of months:

http://blogs.adobe.com/flashplatform/2010/01/building_ipad_apps.html

They are talking about Flash being a development platform to create applications for the platform, not the availability of a flash plug-in for the web browser. Disney may create a flash application for the platform, but you cannot go to their web site and play the flash games on the web site unless you have a flash plug-in.

If you watch the keynote steve says its for showing a slideshow while its docked/sitting around

.

The iPad is NOT a '13" MBP, a 24" Al iMac, and an 8 year old Dell desktop'. None of these devices use an ultra low power system on chip, and they all have mains power. As you observe these machines have Flash largely because they are desktop class machines which are powerful.

The iPad is a marvel of a handheld design. Imagine someone handing you this thing in 1995!! Still today, it's an amazing device, which will prove, in time, to be used in many ways. We currently we are all not able to conceive. Home automation control surface, home security monitoring (wireless camera at your front door transmitting to the iPad). I'm sure Job's in on the ball enough to see the potential.
