Honestly...

I don't want to be rude or anything but arguing about web STANDARD is frekn stupid!!!

And why are you asking me such a questions!?!?
.

Do you understand what a 'standard' is?
Simply because a PROPRIETARY tool is available for unskilled developers to spew out content doesn't make it a standard. If anything, its the primary argument FOR standards.

This about performance and accountability. As others have pointed out, Flash is a CPU hog that would dramatically lower the iPhone/iPad's battery life, for which Apple would be slammed, not Adobe.

In 3 years of using a touch/iPhone, I have yet to miss Flash, and actually enjoy its absence.

That said, I think it should be up the customer if they want to use it or not. There's no doubt that the iPad can handle Flash performance wise.

Unfortunately, the uninformed will bitch and moan that "the iPad has Flash, why not iPhone?!?!?!?!one!!111"

I think Apple is taking the pragmatic approach that is better to just not have that argument in the first place. Also, by not having Flash, they won't have to worry about competing application platforms.

Animations and such are available in HTML 5. They run better in HTML 5 and are open on all modern web browsers. I can sympathize that you want to save money by doing a site yourself (I'm a wedding videographer myself), but all you're really doing is starting to limit your target audience. There is a growing populations of web surfers that don't have Flash (the iPhone/iPod Touch and soon-to-be iPad owners) and when they come across your site that doesn't work properly, they won't blame Apple. Instead, they'll just move on to one of your competitor's sites that's coded in HTML.

P-Worm

There's another roadblock to hinder HTML5 replacement of Flash: microsoft.

HTML5 isn't going to become wide spread for 'desktop websites' until IE supports HTML5. While IE is the most popular browser, I doubt web developers will write HTML5 and Flash components for a website - they'll just go with Flash, since that is what most people can use anyway.

The iPad is not crippled if a camera can't and won't be used.

I'll be buying 150 iPad's and probably one extra on your behalf ;-)

Please send the pathetic thing to me quickly... I'm about to start my period.

Or, you can just send me the cash... you obviously have too much. Or, you just won the lottery and are foolish.

I hate Flash

Then harangue Hulu to release the application they've supposedly developped for the iPhone... Not everything has to be done through the web, you know.

Oh, just to go on record, I hate flash. I don't care how Apple or Hulu does it, I would just like to watch Hulu on the iPad. :)

The Hulu desktop application is junk. I hope their iPhone / iPad apps turn out better...

For those who say "what do you need Flash for anyway?" I can say this:
I'm a photographer, and most photographers build their websites in Flash. I myself did that because Flash is the only platform that allows such fluid animation interactivity. It is simple to program a website in Flash, and I'm not good at programming by the way, and I don't want to spend time learning it. However, I do want to build a complex and beautiful website alone, without having to pay someone. I can do this in Flash. I can't do it in HTML, or in any other language. Therefore, if I want to access many of the websites that interest me, including my own, I cannot do it on a device that doesn't have Flash. Not to mention that I love to watch Flash animations on various websites, that's also impossible. I don't really care about videos and YouTube, I actually want real Flash. I understand that keyboard input and mouse coordinates cannot be retrieved by Flash for a touchscreen device, but many things like button presses and text boxes have no reason not to work. I don't understand why it's so damn complicated, that no one has been able to make Flash work on the iPhone for so many years. I'm sure it's possible, it's only a matter of whether Apple wants to go on hating every other company and pretending they don't exist, and that users will never notice their absent support from Apple devices. Flash is an amazing technology and more an more websites are being built entirely in Flash.

Careful now. Don't you know the one thing the fan boys around here hate, is audio/visual professionals who work in a way that's conducive to their field, and not the way the programers, or fan boys demand us too. They'll skewer you for asking apple to take you professional needs in to mind. It's only theirs that should be followed.

Downloading TV Shows is not stealing.

When stealing is a general term that covers blatant media piracy, yes it is.

All my movies I rip from my own DVD collection or I make a rip from NetFlix.

Also stealing (Netflix) or a violation of license (ripping your own DVDs).

I do this stuff too sometimes, but I don't dilute myself into thinking it's legit.

Then harangue Hulu to release the application they've supposedly developped for the iPhone... Not everything has to be done through the web, you know.

Agreed! If YouTube can have an app so can Hulu...

So is it safe to say this won't support Netflix streaming?
Netflix stream on anything pre-intel CPU, so where does that leave this?

I got to be honest.... If I could watch Netflix etc, this device would be great when I am in a hotel for a few weeks on a job.

EDIT: Netflix doesn't seem inclined to make it happen.... http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/01/netflix-ceo-not-streaming-to-the-ipad-in-the-near-term.ars

Then talk with your money and drop them. They will come around.

I bet the iPad in the promotional video had multitasking too. Why? Because they're all rumoured to be iPhone OS 4.0 features. Remember the rumour that OS 3.2 and 4.0 tablets were being tested out? This is probably one of the tablets with 4.0 on it, therefore, it has Flash.

I'd rather see you menstruate out of your mouth

Marked as negative again...

As said in previous thread I will mark each iPad news (regardless of what they are) as negative UNTIL Apple pull finger out of their ****** and allows Flash player to be installed...

Hezuz!

At this moment right now, someone just burst into Steve Jobs' office waving some papers, shouting, "Sir! iPad articles on Macrumors.com are being voted negative!!" Steve Jobs leaps to his feet, "To the iMobile!!"

:apple:

I really do want to watch Hulu on the iPad. I'm one of those people that want to use this to make life easier.

Yes I've heard of Torrents and last I heard, downloading TV shows from Torrents is illegal, no matter how you feel about it.

I agree.... watching Hulu, or Netflix, content would seriously make this device a lot more desirable. I already subscribe to Netflix, so it seems silly to rent/buy movies from iTunes on top of that.

I would buy a base model iPad to use around the house for things I don't need a whole laptop for. One of those uses would definitely be watching streaming content. What does your local news use to stream? I would love to pop one on a stand in the kitchen and watch the news, or a movie, or podcast, while making breakfast or dinner.

I don't use Flash, I browse with Flash disabled.

The primary reason they don't support Flash in this device is because it is very compute expensive and drains batteries.

You invalidated your own argument. Apple could make Flash an option to turn on and off as well. No need to drain your battery if you don't want to.

The primary reason they don't support Flash, is because it competes with the App Store. Apple wants to force feed you their own games and their own TV shows. God forbid you watch movies on Netflix and TV shows on Hulu instead of buying them at the iTunes Store. God forbid you play Flash games at MiniClip, instead of buying them at the App Store.

If you don't see what's going on, you should try to pull your head out off Mr. Job's ass.

Ah we can only hope! Along with a camera. I guess the only thing we can do now is wait.

Well, Apple believes they have to hold back stuff like they have on the iphone to "incentivize" the upgrade in a year or two.

Me... for this issue of Flash.... Have no clue on why it is being restricted from being integrated in the iphone and ipad. there are quite alot of websites which i can't use and it is very frustrating. Java and Flash to me are a MUST.

I will not complain about the lack of Flash until Adobe shows that they can build a version of Flash that runs reasonably well on a new MacBook, let alone something that runs on an iPhone. Until then, I don't see how anyone can fault Apple for not supporting the technology. Apple has already stated that the iPhone can't handle Flash content with respectable performance. I don't think they meant that the performance was getting close and I doubt the targets have been met with the 3GS or the iPad. The iPhone version will probably share its codebase with the Mac version, and there has always been a consensus that the Mac version is far inferior to the Windows version.

Even on Adobe's web site, the list of mobile devices supporting Flash all show Flash Lite. Though Flash Lite is getting closer, it's still not the same as the desktop version. Just because other cell phone support "a Flash", doesn't mean Apple is the one at fault.

The next version of Flash can build for the iPhone, so content developers can use this as one option. I read that the next OS supports 3rd party handling of custom file types too, so maybe we can get something similar to how YouTube video is handled now on the iPhone.

Seriously, has anyone considered that Apple might want to support Flash?

Anyway, end rant. Some will avoid the device from lack of Flash support, and that is their prerogative, but many others will find the device ideal for their purposes. For the record, I would love to see Flash on the iPhone and a camera for videoconferencing, but I will entertain the possibility Apple had valid reasons for the omissions.

PS: Videoconferencing would be great, but Apple will never include that until the mobile networks can handle full-screen videoconferencing. I can't see WiFi-only as being an option here in the company's eyes. Regarding a rear-facing camera, does anyone really think a camera on this device is convenient?

PPS: Just because HTML/CSS/JavaScript can be used for the same effect, doesn't mean it's practical to do so. Flash is easier to develop for and acts uniformly across browsers. That said, I would love to see Adobe become a JS IDE over time.

PPPS: Hulu? Does anyone really think that Apple wants to implement Flash for something that only works in the US?

I vote for doctored also, jobs had a missing plug in during the live demo and I am sure they would have mentioned it if it did run flash

The bar...

Again, I expected more functionality than my iphone 3gs provides. That was the minimum. This thing went backward. My jailbroken phone provides more functionality than this thing (other than size). I just think that is SO SAD. What were they thinking????? Again, maybe OLD PEOPLE... the baby boomers are getting old and it's a huge market. I just don't see why they couldn't have made a device for the rest of us. JUST ONE. A $1,000 model that did something DIFFERENT. That had A REAL WEB BROWSER. THAT I COULD VIDEOCONFERENCE FROM. WHY?????????
:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

Why DID Jobs navigate to a flash site during the keynote...?

Because virtually every mainstream website has flash. It's a HUGE chunk of the internet and it would have been extremely difficult for him to browse for a minute or two without running into flash.

Such a shame. I'm sure it could / can run Flash, but its been deliberately crippled. The problem is that Apple don't want it to run Flash. They know you can't come close to the richness of Flash with HTML, so they want to control and monetise the only way you can - through apps written and published through the App Store.

All those people droning on about how they won't miss Flash are going to have a nasty surprise when they sit down with an iPad and start browsing the internet. Flash is everywhere.
