You are really setting your side up to fail, lol! I would absolutely love to downgrade to iOS 4 on both devices, but as you should know, can't. Glorious Apple has decided that nobody, including the Apple "Genius'", can downgrade their own devices firmware. Yet another reason I left Apple for good. As said before, I spent $500 for 1.5 years good use, which is totally unacceptable to me...

Well, I tend to research what I'm getting myself into and have saved my SHSH Blobs should I need to downgrade. It's not impossible, it just requires some planning.

I agree with you though that Apple should have never made that call regarding downgrading. Though, even if you aren't going to go through the trouble of saving SHSH blobs, it's still important to stay away from adopting a version of iOS until others have reported back on it with your device. This saved me a lot of headache when iOS 4 was released for the iPhone 3G. Apple hasn't been too good about this either. There's really no reason versions of iOS are even released for devices that simply can't handle them.

I'm still not stepping back off of my statement though that Apple products pay for themselves. With the proper planning and some research just about any iOS device should last a long time.

I managed to get a $400 quote for my 32gb iPad 3 wifi right after the announcement. I mostly just wanted to lock myself in before the price dropped just in case I decided to make an upgrade, and boy did it. It dropped to $250 and then worked back up to $300 later in the day.

Call me dumb all you want, but I justify each upgrade by only paying a fraction of the cost because Apple products have such high resale values. I'm worried about the resale value of the 3 by the release of the 5, and I'm going to step down to the 16gb so it's a $100 upgrade. Since I'll probably stay with the lowest storage model next time around too, I predict that this decision will either save me money or cost me no extra when it's all put down on paper, compared to if I were to skip this upgrade and hold out for the next.

I don't like that they just tossed the 3 out and kept the 2 and the 4 which amounts to what the 3 should have been, but having the latest and greatest is better for my wallet come upgrade time.

I won't call you dumb because I did the exact same thing with the same model. As soon as I read rumors of the potential update to the iPad 3 I too locked in $400.00 at Gazelle. I mainly use my iPad to create renderings for landscape clients as we discuss their project. As great as the iPad 3 is at doing this it can get sluggish when the rendering gets into several layers. So, the iPad 4th Generation sounds like a good update to me and Gazelle seems to be a practical way of getting rid of my current machine quickly.

A bit flooded, always better to sell directly to others, cannot imagine selling on this Gazelle site and lossing so much money. Never sell to resellers, loss is too great.

Only if your time and energy to handle the sale comes cheep. My time is too valuable then to spend it hunting and negotiating.

Gazelle offered me 550, amazon offering 660 if you take a gift card. Anybody wanna buy 660 worth of stuff off amazon through me? :)

Considering you can buy basically everything on Amazon, how could you not go through a $660 card fairly quickly. Amazon money seems like it is as good as cash to me these days. I'm a prime member and the fast free shipping makes it the easiest way to shop for just about everything. Some stuff is more expensive than if I shop for a sale, but not much.

I listed my 64gb iPad 3 on Craigslist for $750 for ***** and giggles. If It sells, great, free upgrade. If not, I'll just skip the 4G.

Already had an offer for $700, but I'm in no rush. The fact that it's still running 5.1.1 probably helps.

what's the point? it's ludicrous. its insane to see how people became obsessed with these spec bumps and how easily they trade their money just for a minor change. the damn thing is just as good as it was 5 months ago. god sake... grow up

i know someone at uni, he has MacBook black edition (2007-2008) and original iPad he got first mac mini at his home for server, he does pretty much thing on these "outdated" devices, But I am sure those people (more than 90%) don't do more than Facebook, email, photo and media.

Isn't it using the same GPU on the 3rd gen? It only has about a 66hz boost iirc.

Ars had a good article, but they're theorizing it is in fact the same GPU core, i.e., the SGX543MP4, and also using 4 of them (like the A5X), however, at the media even they're claiming up to a 2X performance boost over the A5X, so they're thinking it's a 500MHz clocked GPU vs. the 250 in the 3rd gen.

(The 32nm SoC they're also assuming will offset the higher clocks, with the same battery, resulting in basically the same power consumption ... though I understand the LTE chipset is actually supposed to be lower power).

Gazelle? Really? I sold my iPhone 4S three days ago through craigslist for $460 cash! I may have gotten a little bit more on ebay but going through the rigamarole of fake buyers was pissing me off. $222 was offered on gazelle. Yah.

The prices of Gazelle are insane, considering you can get double that on ebay.

Some people just like to have all the latest, greatest, newest stuff, and are willing to pay for that privilege. Who are we to criticize? It's their money, and they can do with it as they please! Perhaps a good time to pick up a slightly used iPad3 for a song?

I wonder if they buy a new car every year too.

Oh yeah, that's what I was saying, I don't know if you can/could, wasn't sure if it was like a voucher number that could be transferred.

Amazon is tempting, we buy so much through them, it would be as good as cash (heck, I've got like $100 worth of stuff sitting my cart at Amazon right now).

So do I, especially when school starts again, I could get my books through them. But I would kinda rather have the money now to use for the iPad.

I feel bad at the way I look at my iPad 3 now, it's not the same. We wouldn't last another year together.

That's true but I noticed I buy a lot more off amazon when I have those gift cards. Stuff I may not have actually bought otherwise. Like the solid state drive that I have on the way now. I didn't really need it but it was on sale for a really good price and I had that credit from my 4s.

Only if your time and energy to handle the sale comes cheep. My time is too valuable then to spend it hunting and negotiating.

Since I mostly use eBay it only takes a few photographs a little time to list and I am done. Aside from that just a little time to pack and ship it out with the others items I have sold while running standard errands.

And how much time and dffort did you have to put in for that $70+? I guess if you're making minimum wage, it's a wash.

Currently money is worth more then my time, and selling is what I am doing in general at this time so anything with possible profit or selling old items for as much as I can has to be done. Seventy dollars is not petty change in my world, ten dollars would be a different story.

The prices of Gazelle are insane, considering you can get double that on ebay.

I cannot imagine losing that much money when double can be made on eBay, I guess if someone has large sums of cash they are not worried about a couple hundred.

If you're selling your iPad 3 in order to upgrade over to the 4, pardon my French but you're an idiot. If you're funding an iPad mini purchase, then right on!

The prices of Gazelle are insane, considering you can get double that on ebay.

Minus all the fees.

You say "With the proper planning and some research just about any iOS device should last a long time".. Why should I need to do any research? Apple always talks about how user friendly their products are... It is insane to push the blame over to me, the consumer, when Apple is clearly at fault here... I consider myself a pretty technically inclined person, and never even heard of SHSH blobs until I started looking for ways to downgrade. How would you expect the average consumer with lower technological knowledge to remember to do that? My grandparents, who represent the average iOS user IMO, can hardly remember how to initiate the OTA update, let alone connect their device to the computer, download TinyUmbrella, wait for SHSH capture, etc..... Apple shouldn't be so stuck up about every friken thing they do...

I got a price for my 32gb iPad 2 wifi on amazon before the event - $380, not bad. IMO amazon credit is cash, given what you can buy there.

Could I get more on eBay or Craigslist? Probably. I've done it before. But those sites are hassles (and eBay has fees). Liars, scammers, people who don't pay or don't show up, etc. the higher price if get isn't worth my time and aggravation.

Only if your time and energy to handle the sale comes cheep. My time is too valuable then to spend it hunting and negotiating.

And also taking the risk that the buyer is dishonest.. Ebay is far too slanted in the buyer's favor these days and Craigslist is just not worth the hassle.

I'm not saying Apple has done the right thing here. In fact, I've clearly stated I agree with you on those points. I never pushed the blame on anyone.

I simply said with that with proper planning and research any iOS device should last a long time.

Which you initially refuted and still can't refute.

Been selling on and off eBay for years and 99.9% lucky in regards to buyers working out, I almost worry every single time that I will get a horrible buyer, I list every detail and I still wait for their to be some issue I never thought of. So far so good.

Craigslist is hit or miss, sometimes it just takes too long to sell anything there, everyone wants everything for nothing, far below market value and people are too flaky.

I will take a little time to make an extra hundred dollars on an item.

Craigslist is well worth the hassle if you're selling an Apple product. Even if it's outdated, it's still gold by craigslist standards.

are most ipad users hardcore gamers ?

because otherwise upgrading to the latest/most expensive ipad is useless

it's like when i see customers coming to get the latest core ix with tons of Ghz to surf the web and do emails

A6X is twice faster than A5... ok, but for what purpose ?

iPad 3 was already capable of playing HD videos and one would not notice any real difference in browsing the web in safari....

Disagree. CL buyers are the cheapest, flakiest, most aggravating people to deal with. Never again.

YES!

I had some good luck a couple times, overall they want a brand new iPad 3 for three hundred dollars or less. Insanely cheap people on there.

From what I understand, the changes on the 4th Gen:

Lightening port
2X performance CPU
2X performance GPU
720P front camera
Expanded LTE support
50% thinner*

*OK, lied about that one ... woo!

Looks like it's also:

Backside illumination on rear camera (specs look exactly like the 4s camera)
Dual channel WiFi N (2.4 + 5GHz)

:)
