I saw and used one for the first time today. Surprised at how heavy it was. It's not very comfortable to hold in one hand and type with another. It's a big iPod touch. I have a feeling that after the novelty wears off there's going to be a lot of unused iPads sitting around in people's homes.

thats why it is going to be one unit per home kinda sales, not like iPhone or iPod touch sales numbers...

My guess:

750,000 sold, including online backorders.

524,262 actually in the hands users.
Right. Apple has announced they consider firm purchases by channel partners to be sales, while sales through their own online and retail sales outlets are not sales until the item is spoken for by a customer. I think they do not count their sales till shipped too. So iPad 3G are not yet counted, for example.

So these are consumer sales when direct and dealer sales when through channel partners. The sell through rate is very high right now so the time lag is probably on the order of a week or two on the slowest end.

The uptake on that counting site is about 1 a second as I post this and most people sit down after dinner to initiate their iPads.

Rocketman

here we go again... seeing how it took them 3 weeks to sell 300K hard to believe they sold 250k in 3 days - but we will find out sooner of later.

maybe because the 300k included the ones shipped to BestBuy - some had not been sold to actual consumers at that point so they were not in use.

The only descrepancy I could see with this method is that it would most likely count all the display models at the Apple Stores, Best Buys, and the like. I would image there is a relatively significant amount, maybe not though.

Again, just in case you didnt read my last 2 post...

SALES to no denote FUNCTIONALITY AND USABLITY... get it?

Again, apple is the best advertising company in the world.. hands down... Iphone was passed up last year in function and design by HTC, Samsung, Sony, Nokia... Ipad will see the same fate... but sooner

(Note for the reading impaired: What I said above has no barring on apple mobile products selling like hotcakes)

So, in essence, you're saying that people have continued to buy iPhones and iPod Touches (also iPhone OS) just because of marketing, and that they are nonfunctional and unusable, but people torture themselves anyway, just to use an Apple product?

Really? Because that has not been my experience when talking with other iPhone and iPod Touch users. They absolutely adore them. The majority of what I've been seeing online for the iPad is similar: The functionality and usability are stellar. I don't have my 3G iPad yet, but I expect I'll have a similar experience. I do love my iPhone, and can't wait to use an iPad.

Now, what I'd like to see you do is back up your inference that iPhone OS devices like the iPad are nonfunctional and unusable. Can you do that? Oh, and "It'z gotz to have file systemz and CLI and allow unsigned codez or itz lamezorz" isn't a good enough argument. And neither do other Android-fanboi-isms (see below). The question you need to answer is this: Does it do what users want, and does it do it elegantly and easily? iPhone OS devices have all that in spades, your assertions notwithstanding, and you know it. Just because it doesn't do what you, as an individual, want doesn't mean it is utterly unusable for a large number of consumers (at current count just over 500,000).

BTW, if Apple products are so awful, why are you trolling an Apple site to begin with. Did you notice the name of it? It says "MacRumors," not "NokiaRumors."

I think what kills it for too many, are the iPhone owners.

We're sitting here going, ok, so you basically made a copy of my phone with a huge screen and no camera and I can't use it to make calls and text...so...it's not even as good as an iPhone relatively speaking...it's just a big iPod correct?

You do not speak for all of us iPhone owners, smotchkkiss. But hey, trot out that lame "Big iPod Touch" excuse again. It's always good for a laugh.

My apple store had 6 from what I could see (perhaps 8). If theres 1000 stores with 6 each thats still only 6,000.

Even still, I think a lot of people are waiting for the 3G model as well. I'm on the fence on whether I'll get one or not (since it's not like I really need one) but if I were to get one I would get the 3G model.

But their estimates can't be very accurate. I'm assuming Apple will release sales information tomorrow as they usually do.

The iPhone sells for the same reason the iPod Touch sells, and for the same reason Macs are the Gold Standard of computing:

They provide a superior User Experience. This is all that matters.

In a about a year's time he won't be speaking for anyone. ;)

I wonder how many PC tablets from all manufacturers have been sold to date. Apple may exceed that number soon.

I would bet that all of the PC tablets sold together wouldn't equal the amount Apple has sold of the iPads in 4 days. Now, I'm exaggerating but I wouldn't be surprised if I was right. I've never seen anyone with a PC tablet and no tablet to date has made as much buzz and create as much as excitement as the iPad. The HP Slate intro'd by Steve Emballmer was forgotten 5 minutes after he showed it.

This tells them nothing about how many were sold, only how many are being used on their clients websites.

Logically, it gives a hint on how many have been sold. Unless you think there are 250,000 Apple employees all hitting their websites? If they're saying some 250,000 have actually hit their websites and estimate that's only about 40% of all units sold, that still adds up to well over 500,000 sold, does it not?

You don't need people when you have bots.

You're right I do not speak for all iPhone users.

I should clarify, I'm even HERE at MR waiting desparately for them to tell me something about the iPad to validate spending $500 on an iPad...I know it came off very pessimistic and I know I used too broad of a stereo type. I used to be anti-Apple myself...

honestly...if I weren't already about to invest in an iMac 4c because I'm so thrilled over Apple products, I can even say I might have been more optimistic about purchasing it. My perspective stance is based on the iPhone LOVERS like myself that I know that are waiting ourselves because we do want a reason to spend the $500 for it...

So do I WANT one? Heck yea! Can I afford to buy a downgrade of my current device and feel ok about it? No...

If it's stellar stellar sales of an Apple product there must be some other explanation! Bots. Hidden redirects. Companies that have been paid off by Apple.

175 million iPod sales. Yep. All fake.

60 million+ Mac users. They must all be just the crazed fanboys.

Tens of millions of iPhone sales. Apple must have given them away for free.

Apple #1 in Customer Satisfaction ratings AGAIN?? Rounding error!

Anything to not make Apple appear right yet again. It just isn't fair to the other super-creative companies that are trying so hard to bring us all the wrong things!

Ah! In that case, I think you're doing the right thing. iPhone + iMac is a great combination. It's what I have at home. (iPhone + Xserve at work is even better! LOL.) What I'm doing is filling in between the iPhone I have and the iMac I have -- and doing primarily what Apple seems to be positioning iPad for: sitting on the couch and consuming media. I was using a Dell craptop for that, but it's a goner, and I would way rather use an iPad.

Where is my 3G iPad already! Come on Apple, pick the damn ball up and lets get moving!
Mod + 500,000

Tell me about it! I'm dying here. The freakin' case came today, but no 3G iPad! AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!

There still seems to be plenty of blue water left.

ROFL @ uncapped zealotry.

Back to reality....I will go by apple's figures and it is indeed a great start. Question is whether this is sustainable.

Sustainable? They haven't even released the 3G one yet ;)
Plus I know lots of people like me are just waiting for the holidays.

Money

Being the iPad costing ~$260 to build and a price tag of ~$500 simple math would put the apple cash flow at ~$125,822,880

$500-260= $240

$240 x 524,262 (units supposedly sold) = $125,822,880

If we go further

$125,822,880 - Marketing - R&D= real total

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I'm an initial doubter that sure as hell wants one now. :p
I'm hearing too much good stuff to pass it up.... I will be getting one.

You won't regret it! All the negative hype by some is truly amazing! This device is a joy to use with awesome screen, tons of app choices, long battery life and the ability to access web content, netflix and other video outlets and a beautiful ereader whether it's iBooks, Amazon, B&N or Project Gutenburg a makes this a great device.

All you negative people can continue to slam the iPad, but the actual users are in Love with it.

Just offer up a Poll here that only detects iPad users and let them vote their opinion and it will be self evident. ;):)

SALES to no denote FUNCTIONALITY AND USABLITY... get it?

Just because you repeat it doesn't mean it's true. One could equally argue that functionality and usability denote sales. Don't assume the targeted users don't get what they want from the iPad just because you don't.
