Tell that to the oil industry.

ha! good one i guess you're right, but i guess the Government has a strong influence on oil and may be less inclined to investigate issues of Supply and Demand, whereas Apple is a standard electronics manufacturer and retailer lol wouldn't hurt the US if they kicked Apple up the arse to force Supply for any Demand without legitimate reason

Pretty much the plan. Limit the inventory like Nintendo did with the popular Wii and people who are on the fence will pre-order or join the crowds who are standing in ridiculous lines.

I don't think manufacturers are innocent but in the case of the wii, nintendo "said" they didn't increase capacity (which takes time and money) only to have demand drop after the holiday season. Of course no manufacturer has a crystal ball so not even their highly paid economists could have predicted a two (three?) year chistmas blitz.

This is in stark contrast to, say, Cepia Inc, who created the zhu zhu pet franchise. I'm sure you know how hard they were to find just a few months ago , especially in nov and december. Well, in an effort to both capitalize on the success of their franchise and to stifle the lucrative underground trade, cepia increased capacity, expanded the product line and I believe some vendors like Fred meyer even flew those little suckers out from china. Now the product is easy to find. Really easy to find lol. All those momtrepreneurs clearing the shelves got stuck with alot of inventory after eBay prices dropped.

What are you talking about? International iPad shipping end of March... Stevie said it himself at the KeyNote.... the only thing Americans can laugh at is the ridiculous prices the UK has too pay for Apple products

If you knew the release date, you could get a cheap flight on Virgin Atlantic, and camp out at an Apple Store on release date. Instant gratification.

If it were me I would delay rather than have a subpar launch.

I agree. The first runs of lots of new Apple versions seem to have a lot of quality issues.

The first Air was a disaster. The first 27" iMac screens were a disaster.

I'd like to see Apple get the quality right this time. Since I always have to have the latest Apple product they'd be doing me a favor if they waiting until it actually worked. And had a camera.

And all you conspiracy folks who think it's being done on purpose to raise demand...you are all a bit quick to jump on the "Apple is Evil" bandwagon based upon a rumor, and without a shred of evidence (child labor notwithstanding). I think I will wait for some sort of actual honest-to-goodness hard data before I pass judgment about this. You can all go put on your tinfoil hats. Good grief.

there's nothing evil about it. If it is legal and will help you get free press and ultimately sell more of your product, I wouldn't put it passed any capitalist.

It is probably you who think too highly of Apple to not consider such a tactic.

Apple is putting some very breaking edge technology into these devices. If rumors are true, the iPad will not run on electrons but anti positrons. The first generation device will also have an optional Continuum Transfunctioner. This level of technological progress takes time.

I think this reason makes the most sense...

I hate the constrained supply game. Just gimme my stuff! At least if I dont get one I can read some actual hands on reviews. Probably wont be many tablet specific apps so my iphone should suffice until june and hopefully OS 4.0.

Or past any capitalist?

It's not a game, it's just good planning.

Demand for the Ipad will be higher in the beginning, since
early adopters and gadget freaks will be waiting for one.

Once the waiters are satisfied, demand will drop to a lower
level.

Apple's choices are:

  1. Build and stockpile Ipads, so that the initial demand
spike can be met from the stockpile
  2. Configure additional assembly lines for the initial demand,
then close them down as demand wanes
  3. Configure assembly for the expected long-term demand, and
accept that there will be a wait in the beginning (and accept
the "boy it's really popular" hype generated by the lines)

The first two choices eat into margins....

Production Issues!, demand issue more likely.

When was the last time apple actually held back the release of an item due to faulty or poor quality parts, cough iPhone 3Gs yellow screen feature passed off as normal, cough iMac 27 inch screen issue.

Maybe but there will clearly be competition on multiple fronts. Besides given the international demand, they needa lot of iPads. It is a game to me, just like busines in general is a game. Higher stakes monoploy if you will. I understand the logic in decision making but dont tell there is not a desire to build hype through limited availability.

Anyhow, my point is that want one and dont care how they get it to me.

Maybe Apple just decided to produce less first gen iPads.

Either to have less stock in case the demand isn't as great as expected, or they are already working on a quick follow-up in respect to all the negative reviews the iPad has gotten.

A quick revision would indeed be interesting.

I actually thought the problem was down to not enough young children were left in the factories to build the things after the recent problems in this area.
;)

Gives me longer to save up at least.

The UK price for the base model is rumoured to be £389!!

Cripes!

Yup, or you could buy a kindle DX for $489 + VAT + Import Duty.

You're not really suggesting £389 is expensive for this device, surely?

Yes, because every 27" imac shipped wasn't tested and every single purchaser received a faulty unit - Apple purposely distributed a faulty product because it knew how much good that would do their reputation.

Likewise the 3GS - every unit shipped was faulty.

I mean - come on - seriously.

You need to keep things in perspective, there will always be a percentage of electronic devices shipped that develop issues. There are too many variables, environmental and delivery factors to test for every known combination.

My 27" iMacs - no issue at all, I have nine. I also know other people with the 27" and no issues. I've yet to speak to a real world user who does. I'm not saying there was no issue - just that Apple didn't rush anything out, and have now fixed the various issues that a tiny percentage of users experienced using a software update. Therefore there was no global, common hardware issue.

Likewise with the 3GS.

It's very easy to jump on the criticism bandwagon and blow every issue out of all proportion. Of course it's a PITA when it happens to you, and disappointing but no company deliberately send out a faulty appliance.

The first air was amazing, my first gen 27" iMacs are amazing. Where are you getting your info - did you have a faulty air or iMac, or did you just read about the issues experienced by a tiny minority on these sites?

I've always bought first gen from Apple and have never, ever had an issue. If I did have an issue, I'd return the product for an exchange or refund, it would not be a "disaster".

iPads going on Ebay for $1000, anyone?

And hopefully not for $300 five months later. When the new one will be announced... with camera... multitasking... A9 (?)... and a decent screen that is actually fit for reading e-books.

Why don't you tell that to Toyota customers?

I know - it's atrocious! How dare companies continue to develop and build on their products with new technologies and added features? It's a good job that Apple are the only company in the world that do that.

I mean, can you imagine buying a car, and then the next year a BETTER car coming out and your car not being worth as much as it used to be. Eventually you'd have to give up and buy a new car and hand over money again to these greedy, evil companies. And then where would the economy be?!

Life is hard.

Because a computer with an issue has slightly less risk for fatality than a vehicle travelling at 60 miles per hour out of control with your children in the back seat. Don't trivialise and draw irrelevant parallels.
