Yep. I sold my iPad2 in anticipation to get the iPad3 now I'm not even sure I want to get it. They didn't even add any more ram. Could have easily made it a more worthwhile update.

...ummm, all reports point toward a doubling of ram from 512KB to 1GB

----------

The screen is really the only thing they vastly improved, everything else was just a slight bump, not what you would expect from a new model.

Which is why they didn't call this the iPad 3

They had me at "retina". Honestly, I do a ton of reading on my iPad so this is HUGE for me. :D

Am I the only one who thinks this update just screams "Average"

The 4S update was so much better compared to this update.

No, I think it's quite the opposite. iPhone 4S only got Siri, a faster processor, and a better camera.

Retina display, Quad Core, and 4G is pretty significant, IMO.

Yeah, it's not like you ever use the screen for anything.

You're entitled to you opinion of course, but this is the third gen of a product, it's going to be evolutionary upgrades. LTE + retina screen while at least keeping the same battery and graphics performance isn't bad.

Pretty sure people are saying the ram is the same but if it has 1gb ram i'll take back that previous statement.

Brace yourself for more let down in the future. These days devices are just screens and there is only so much you can visually do to refresh them.

siri missing

if siri functionality of the iPhone 4s was on the iPad i would be very happy. It would allow me to use the device as personal assistant. Something that i would value more than a upgrade in display resolution. By not releasing today Siri on iPad but only dictation it seems that the iPad fail the mark in progress if you compare it to the development of the iPhone4s.
In my opinion the iPad should have more functionality features than the iPhone, logically if the tablet market is taking over the pc market. For me as user i have to wait till Siri is fully adapted into iOS for iPad before i feel comfortable buying it. Just because the iPhone 4s offers more a better camera, also retina, complete Siri while the iPad have lesser camera quality and no siri.
Not knowing what Steve job will do but if apple is stretching their technology knowledge advancements which can be adopted into products on the shelf to generate more money by just releasing minor features. Something that would go against apple's philosophy in the time apple versus windows. Seem their is oppurtunnity in the tablet market for Siri like service, how longer apple is holding out on their iPad device with Siri other tablet makers could start releasing such innovation.
They can prove to court that iPhone works with sire but not iPad. Which mean apple could hold back this technology advancement. Holding back technology in devices is aloud but if another company produce a tablet with Siri like technology they could convince court that apple is holding back so that other companies can not compete wit their iPad product.......What will Steve Job think....?

We won't get full acknowledgment of ram until iFixit do their tear down.

But there was a developer report that indicated it was 1GB.

So what is it then? 2S?

Apple felt there was too many improvements to call it a 2S

A screen overhaul is kind of a big deal, especially of this magnitude. If a better screen isn't your thing then this is going to seem like a very mum refresh. It's really that simple.

Well the retina will become normal after a while and you won't appreciate it unless you compare it to the IPad 2. Cameras are updated but ive rarely used the IPad as a camera.

I guess I had better not look at the new high res screen because my current Ipad2 looks just fine to me now. Not worth the upgrade to me, but I guess the apps written in the future will take advantage of the extra cpu power.

The event today wasn't all that exciting to me at all, kind of like the Iphone 4s release.
And I have an apple tv2, so the 1080p thing on the new improved model means zip to me.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B176 Safari/7534.48.3)

I'd say it's definitely a solid update. But even if you are disappointed or thought it was average, there is one good thing about the new iPad: you can now get the 16gb iPad 2 refurbished for $349!

this is exactly what i wanted. except, of course, for the name. new? must have spent weeks thinking up that one...

I'm trying to pre-order mine now. Considering the server situation on the Apple Store I bet many other people are like me and wanting to snap one up!

iFixit won't be able to tell, it'll be Chipworks that does the xray to tell how much RAM the A5X has.

This was easily better than the 4S update. Retina display, 4G LTE, vastly better camera than iPad 2 and Quad core A5X. How much better could it have gotten? What were you really expecting?

Personally I think they delivered big.

Urgh for me the disappointing thing is the price reduction on iPad2. I sold mine to a friend 2 days ago for the price a new one now costs. Awkward conversation pending....

not too worried about what steve does/did/will think. this is the best product on the market in many ways, so it is pretty difficult to argue that the leader is inadequate.

As much as I love me some Apple Products, I just got the PS Vita, and I have an iPad 1 and an iPad 2. I think I will pass on iPad 3 and wait for iPad 4 :).

Although, that being said, this machine will be incredible :). Everyone who is buying one, I'm envious, but not enough to drop another $1,000 dollars :). (I always gotta get top model).

Screen is EVERYTHING, especially for a 9.7" tablet. The new iPad is a HUGE upgrade and virtually every app is upgraded because of this. Retina Display by itself is enough for an upgrade imo. Everything else including the 5.0 camera, 1080p recording, QUAD-CORE, voice dictation is a nice bonus.

lol. no kidding. but, i think we all saw that coming... at least he gets to avoid taxes :)

I agree. They great thing about Apple is that they create things no one else has thought of or conceived of in quite the same way. The upgrades for the new iPad are insanely predictable.

Also, "new iPad?" Are they kidding? What happens when the next generation iPad comes out? Is that the "new new iPad" or does the new IPad become the old iPad?

I don't think that I can be considered a troll considering that this is the first negative thing that I have ever posted on macrumors. I just can't fathom how a retina display makes it worth the upgrade. This just proves that eye-candy > performance for some people.

----------

And if it came down to it, I may upgrade if I can see a ROI over my current model. Don't be so quick to judge someone based on an opinion.

Eye Candy = Performance on a tablet device. You might want to check the value prop of a media consumption device in the first place.

That's like saying "Eye Candy sells Hi-Def TV's" Well Duh...what else is the measure of something used to watch TV other than a great picture.

Now if you are one of those iPad owners who uses your device primarily as an eBook reader and that's it....well frankly, you should have gone for a dedicated eReader.
