If you want to use the iPad as an ebook reader or browse Web pages with small text, Retina is definitely a major upgrade. I tried the original iPad for ebook reading and found the fuzzy text unsatisfactory. I skipped the iPad 2 because of the same screen resolution. Today, I pre-ordered the iPad and can't wait for March 17th.

It really is a case of to each his own as already stated.

Screen is EVERYTHING, especially for a 9.7" tablet. The new iPad is a HUGE upgrade and virtually every app is upgraded because of this. Retina Display by itself is enough for an upgrade imo. Everything else including the 5.0 camera, 1080p recording, QUAD-CORE, voice dictation is a nice bonus.

The chip is dual core, it even says so on the specs page. This is an exact iphone4-4s scenario.

I agree. They great thing about Apple is that they create things no one else has thought of or conceived of in quite the same way. The upgrades for the new iPad are insanely predictable.

Also, "new iPad?" Are they kidding? What happens when the next generation iPad comes out? Is that the "new new iPad" or does the new IPad become the old iPad?

kindle fans know about this naming mess. amazon used to refuse to distinguish between products, so when you called up, the representatives wouldn't use "generation", but you had to, because that is the only way you could distinguish between old, new, newest. stupid. almost as bad as the alphabet soup asus likes to use for their products.

ipad 3. what is so difficult about that?

I'm not sure what people are so mad about the new iPad. It has a new fantastic screen, same amazing battery life/ price, 4G LTE availability, quad core graphics, and dictation which is like Siri for the iPad. That seems like a pretty big upgrade for me and it was more of an upgrade than the iPad 2 was for the original iPad. Apple did a fine job with the third generation iPad and I plan to buy it.

Eye Candy = Performance on a tablet device. You might want to check the value prop of a media consumption device in the first place.

That's like saying "Eye Candy sells Hi-Def TV's" Well Duh...what else is the measure of something used to watch TV other than a great picture.

Now if you are one of those iPad owners who uses your device primarily as an eBook reader and that's it....well frankly, you should have gone for a dedicated eReader.

?
i use it primarily as an ereader, and i am thrilled about the retina display. heck, it's the reason i decided to upgrade.

the best large screen alternative is the amazon dx, which sells at 379 with the exact same hardware and software as it had two years ago. it has been abandoned by amazon. i used to own it, and loved it, but it never could handle pdfs well. i had to say goodbye to it. i still have a small kindle for ebooks, but for pdfs, i speak from experience: the ipad is the best by far. i cannot wait for the retina :)

I just don't see how this is a bust or a disappointment, what did you expect? How much better can an iPad get? It's not going to make you coffee, and babysit your children.

It's not quad core but don't really care as iPads always just work, that's the point of the iPad, you don't care what's inside, now with that awesome display I can't think much more I'd want besides lighter.

No, I think it's quite the opposite. iPhone 4S only got Siri, a faster processor, and a better camera.

Retina display, Quad Core, and 4G is pretty significant, IMO.

iphone 4s also got the A5 cpu. 9x faster than A4, i think.

I feel the way I did at the original iPad launch: revolutionary product launch with unprecidented featurs at an affordable launch.

Sure, I am disappointed at no 128 gb version. But other then that, I don't consider this a minot evokutionary step.

But I am astonished that Apple managed the screen resoltuion. I was firmly convinced it was impossible for Apple to offer this type of resolution at the price they are. Epic win n y book.

All of you who I said could say "I told you so" when I wa predicting the ipad 2s with 1600x1200 (and no 4g), feel free to pile on. I am happy to say you were right.

The only fly in the ointment is that I suspect that AT&T won't let me grandfather my original ipad unlimited 3G data plan. The jump to LTEis probably reason for them to say no.

Yes, I meant Quad-core GPU

Infiniti Blade: Dungeons is going to look and run amazing on the iPad Retina Display :D

PS Vita going to get a run for their money

I don't really get it.

They upgraded the screen to be pretty much the best screen money can buy.
They upgraded the power. They upgraded the Camera.
They updated all of iLife and software, etc.
They upgrade to 4G.

All while keeping the same amount of long battery life.

What exactly do you want them to change? There's only so many "new" things you can come out with, at least without looking super gimmicky. Would 3D have been satisfying for you? I personally think until the iPad can produce a hologram with real texture, why should they even bother updating?

it all depends on what you're looking for! I was all ready to purchase the 64 gb 4g, but when I looked at the price ($899 AUD) plus smart cover ($79 AUD), I stepped back and reevaluated my needs.

I quickly checked ebay and gumtree (its like craigslist) and I just bought an iPad 2 64gb 3g for $600!

Australia doesn't really have 4g yet so that's no incentive for me and yes the screen would be nicer, but 300 dollars nicer? I'm not so sure. I'm still on a 3gs so I won't have any disappointments going back and forth.

Its my first iPad and I'm going to be quite happy with the iPad 2. I'll put that $300 towards the next iPad when it comes with 128gb!

Once you're used to an iPhone 4/4S screen it's hard to look at anything else and not think it looks like crap. It's worth it to me for sure. Without hesitation.

I wanted 3 things.

An overhauled OS
An Notification LED (THIS ISNT THAT HARD TO DO)
An SD slot of some kind.

Does anyone think that the iPad 3 is a bust? I don't see any new features that are really "wowing" me right now. I can't see myself ever taking advantage of a quad-core processor on an iPad at this point. I barely ever use the whole processor on my iMac and that is with several intensive tasks running like virtual machines and MMO games. Plus it's not like multitasking on my iMac, because of the iPad's background memory controls. I have to admit that the retina display looks wonderful, but do I really need it...no. The other "features" listed involve a lot of apps, which I don't think can be listed as a feature. The last I checked, an app is an app and it is downloaded onto a device. So it just looks prettier on my new iPad 3:confused:? The only feature that I see as being innovative is the ability to take advantage of a vast majority of different WiFi and data networks. I can't see myself upgrading anytime soon from my iPad 2. I must say that I only wish some more of the iPad rumors were actually true.

Hater!:p

i ordered the natalie portman fembot, but the apple store timed out on me, and by the time i got back it was sold out! darn it :(

this is exactly what i have been wanting. i really don't know what people are looking for to "wow" them if not:

1. the best display on the market
2. the best battery life (or close to it)
3. the best installed apps (seriously, these are high quality)
4. 4g lte
5. a decent camera

this thing is truly impressive, and way ahead of anything else on the market. the weight is imperceptibly more with a retina display and 4g lte as a trade off (the batter). yeah. i can accept that.

i guess if you don't want to upgrade, then that's cool, but i wonder what you are waiting for.

Knowing how you use your iPad (and if I'm not mistaken you currently have an original iPad) I can understand your point of view. I'm guessing that all those PDF's you stare at may be significantly easier on your eyes on the new iPad.

And I don't think many have given Apple sufficient credit for maintaining the iPad's battery life with the new display and faster processor while sacrificing so little in terms of weight and size. That's some seriously good engineering.

As for what I'm waiting for, I can't really say. My iPad 2 serves me so well that I'm really hard put to come up with any earth shaking improvements that would not involve serious penalties in terms of weight or cost. (i.e pressure sensitive screen, e-ink options, etc.) or are simply not going to be allowed by Apple (i.e. greater customization of the user experience, multiple keyboard options, usb connectivity, etc.)

Not every generation of every Apple product is going to be revolutionary, as the iPhone 4S most recently demonstrated. The new iPad had added some incremental value without seriously compromising the excellent features of the iPad 2 at the same price points. That's laudable.

Good sir, I own an iPad 16gb the original base model iPad, I love this thing. I have as you can see in my signature a good listing of gadgets.

Do i NEED the iPad 3, no. Do I want one? yes.

Is it a bust? nah, it is the next evolution of a gadget I love, and it frees up my iPad 1 to go to someone I know whom cannot afford an iPad.
