I don't have any 3rd party stuff on my iPhone, but I'm still a little hesitant to download...based on the list of fixes doesn't seem very compelling except for the fix for the exploit. If it weren't for that one thing, I wouldn't grab it.

Ok so can somebody post how they make the custom ringtones again? I used to know the method back in the day, but I just tried and a little help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

im curious what build number the people getting it directly from itunes is getting? The one I installed from the direct download is build number 3B48b which I was told by a Apple employee Friday was going to be different then the one released today and not desired over the itunes one.

Just want to verify they are indeed different

Okay - just finished. It took about 10 minutes to download and about 7 minutes to upgrade on a mac-mini.

The build is 3B48b and is labeled as a Restore.

Now to go test things out...

Ok, I've got it.

Let's see, which of my "top 10 missing features" from the iPhone have been addressed? Once again, none. As expected. :(

Come on SDK and PDA-oriented 3rd party developers!! :)

My itunes version build has the same number.

Convert the song to AAC, crop it to the length you want, then change the extension to .m4r from .m4a and add it into iTunes.
In finder, the icon of the .m4r should say ring or buzz or something...

I use Garage Band and I fade out the bass so they dont sound all distored then, I put the fade in and fade outs, I set the lenth of the templete for 30 seconds then I export as a aac/m4a file.

Thanks. I'm off to try it now.

It always cracks me up how every time there is a new firmware update people always reply saying: "Safari seems snappier."

The operative word, of course, being 'seems.'

What changes re: ringtones?

"Custom Ringtone section"

What, pray tell, is the "Custom Ringtone section"? I'm sure this doesn't mean that you can officially make your own ringtones and put them on your iphone, right? I thought that would have been so hyped that I would have read about it.

thanks!

That is exactly what it means. And its even done the original way of making an m4a file into an m4r file. Brilliant...unless your being sarcastic in which case :(

Sorry guys but...

I think it just seems to be a running joke...

I do think it is snappier... it feels more responsive, and I know cause of my style of handling the menus, I always cause it to slow down in some parts, so I went there and played alittle.. it was definitely quicker...
;)

I am happy with the iphone's official native apps. safari is great ipod is great mail works fine, thanks imap gmail.

I only ask for a few simple things
mms
ichat
gpsish functionality (navizon)
free ringtones
copy/paste
and a less ugly dock

very basic functionality that should have been standard at release, come on apple hire a couple extra people and get the work done, stop this foolishness of moving around your developers and dedicate specific teams to each device.

Loose out to Google, yeah right!

Have you seen the Android demo? The spend 30 seconds just spinning the globe in the Google Earth part. Gee I have better things to do than use my phone to spin the planet around a few times.

Navigation on it looks clumsy and they don't even show much typing. It's funny how no one is mentioning the virtual keyboard as a "problem" on the iPhone, turns out most people can type really fast on it. Go figure.

Bring on the gPhone, it looks like a piece of (well you get the idea).

I'll keep my iPhone.

Ported applications

I hope that Apple is working with Google to allow Android applications to be easily ported to the iPhone. I believe Android is going to be far more popular than the iPhone and it will attract many more developers than the iPhone ever will.

Apple should have had their SDK available at the iPhone's intro. Or at least announced it at that point. Valuable ground and mindshare has now been lost. Oh well, same old Apple.

Android = Java. iPhone doesn't have Java. so it won't be a direct port.
