The iphone pro will get the promotion display, better cameras ,and that's pretty much it.
That suits me fine.

I can't believe people say there's no difference between last year's models and the year before. They brought out stereo audio recording and camera improvements that I noticed. That apparently isn't enough for most people to upgrade, but for people who happened to be in the market for a new phone last year, they are improvements worth having.

There's a possibility that the new OLED iPhones will have the exact same display as on the Note 10. That's the rumor. And if Apple hasn't altered the specs, for the first time since they were introduced, I will actually be able to use an OLED iPhone without suffering from debilitating migraines.

So I'm quite excited for the announcements.

It’s just that a 5G version is coming out next year, seriously, only iPhone 6s and earlier should be really considering this upgrade. But, if you have the money I guess.
I have had my iPhone 7 for 2.5 years and am ready to upgrade. It’s hard for me to imagine that 5g will change my life that much that it’s worth waiting another year (and if it somehow does, I’m sure I could resell my 11 for a decent price in a year).

Depending on your carrier, 5G might be 2-3 years away with a very expensive rate hike when it does come out. That’s the situation I see forecast in my service area.

Pro motion is coming in 2020
Yeah, with ProMotion 120 Hz along with 5G, that will be a solid release.

The technology already exists for 120 Hz OLED phones in 2019 but I guess Apple didn’t feel the technology was mature enough, cheap enough, or or high yield enough to support a 120 Hz iPhone release in 2019.

I've had every new iPhone every year since the iPhone 3G existed. This is the first time I don't feel the need to upgrade. My Xs is almost perfect. Waiting for the next big iPhone change. :)
I am on the exact same boat as you. It will feel so bizarre. It’s like I can’t help it. After so many years it becomes a custom.

That makes no sense. Just upgrade at 2 years instead of 1.
It actually does. Because If Apple is forced to do an update each year then it takes resources etc. away from something else. If you give a team 2x time often you get much better result. Also, more testing etc. Overall, it would be better.
The need to MUST have new phone each year comes with a price. Hence why X vs XS is really almost identical. Minimal improvement. So one can ask - why bother?

Being on the IUP for a few years it's routine to just get a new phone every year, so I'll be doing the same come Sept 13 unless the pricing goes nuts for the Pro Max or Max Pro or whatever it's called. Anyone contemplating leaving the IUP based on the underwhelming rumors to date? Just curious.

Like most of you I'm not really excited about this years model. But I have a question/confusion. Last year I joined Apples upgrade program for the first time. So I'm about half way through the 24 payments. But looking online it's pretty vague about what happens if you choose not to trade in at the end of the first year. I assume if I don't, and make all 24 payments, I own the phone. So if I get the 2020 model, I shouldn't have to trade in the 2018 one right? Because I will have already made all 24 payments. Also, when I go into the About setting on the phone it says my AppleCare+ will expire in September 2019 (one year from purchase). But the phone has AppleCare+ by being in the upgrade plan. So if I choose not to upgrade right away, and say in November it has a problem, I'm screwed? Doesn't seem right. They advertise that it comes with AppleCare+, which is supposed to be two years.

If you don't trade it in then after 24 payments you own the phone and don't have to return the 2018 one.

The Applecare date is really weird. I have an iPhone XS and mine also says expiring Sept 2019. I just looked at my receipt and it says Applecare+ is included and it doesn't mention anything about it expiring after a year.

edit: OMG I just spent 90 minutes on the phone with Apple support. I was escalated twice and they're still investigating why my expiration date for my iPhone XS is Sept 2019.

Absolutely not. I love the IUP program.

I always find it bizarre that some people seem to think a yearly release schedule for a product means that a company only has a year of development time.

And again, I always find it bizarre that some people seem to think an update is only worthwhile if it’s a big enough change for them to upgrade.

These big phones still seem awkwardly tall, hard to hold, and in wrong proportions, width vs. height.

While I would never switch, the form factor of the larger Samsungs I saw several years back looked much more aesthetically pleasing.

And, don't get me started on the ridiculous notch!

It's been ages since there's been any real keynote magic... I used to tune in religiously, but the show is so formulaic (like watching shopworn early episodes of Friends), the presenters and presentations so staid, and the product changes so underwhelming, I gave up!

Now, if there really were innovation — in keynote and devices — it would be well worth it.

“One more thing...”

Given its announcement, Apple is setting itself up for a big failure if this keynote doesn't involve MAJOR innovation. That's why my crystal ball says the 16” MacBook Pro with redesigned keyboard will be introduced...

I’m going to upgrade simply because I’m on the iPhone upgrade program... shrug.
I'm in the upgrade program as well can't wait to get my hands on the iPhone 11s max.

I'm waiting for the rumored 7 camera system with VR-UltraReality /3D, laser focus, AR enhanced live reality, 8K video in iPhone XII MAX Pro Plus
(ok, I have no idea what I'm talking about :p)

BUT..I do expect the 11S, 12 rumors to start up by Sept 25-30??

That doesn't look half bad.

Well, I don't think you are 100% correct. I understand your point but look at computer line - Mac Pro, iMac etc.
New tech is often available but Apple doesn't update it. Mac Pro went for year before the new one got unveiled even though the tech was available for ages. Sure, they pushed the envelope but isn't that precisely what the other person is trying to say?
New tech is often available but Apple does nothing. Why is that?
I would rather have 2 year cycle with more substantial upgrades then this. X vs XS = literally no difference.
Lets see what 11 will give us

Because the Mac doesn’t account for 48% of Apple’s income like the iPhone does...people don’t jump ship at a moments notice when the Mac doesn’t get updated each and every year (which most do, at least the biggest sellers), but not having a new iPhone every year in this incredibly competitive mobile handset market means that Apple will be labeled as coasting, and because everyone’s upgrade cycle and triggers are different, not having a new iPhone every year would put Apple on a feast and famine roller coaster ride of profits and sales. The only way to keep it evened out as much as possible is to have a new model every year. This is true for almost all manufacturers, but especially Apple as they are still very reliant on the iPhones income for a variety of reasons. They are never going to go to a two year upgrade cycle for the iPhone. Each and every year, there is something for someone and even if the jack-wangs on these forums can’t see it, the average consumer does, because they are at a different cycles in their usage. The only true innovation that they (JW) are looking for is a cheaper price, even if they have to give up features to get it. Or better yet, they seem to think that Apple should sell the iPhone at a loss to appease them and make them feel better about their purchase while they tell us it’s to increase market share or some such useless crap business strategy that doesn’t make any more sense 12 years ago as it does now. Fortunately, Apple doesn’t listen to them.

I hope you are joking here, right?
Of course the update has to be big enough otherwise you are throwing money out the window.
But then again, some people don't care about value so yeah, I'm not surprised.
Regardless, I would rather Apple updates when an update is worth it than these nonsensical mini incremental tiny steps.
But we are different. I'm still on iPhone 6 because I get the value I need and this year I feel the need to actually update. Only time will tell if I need to or not. Otherwise I'll wait till next year if the 6 still holds up for another year :)

And again, I always find it bizarre that some people seem to think an update is only worthwhile if it’s a big enough change for them to upgrade.

I agree. Throw in all the iPad Pro display goodies and Pencil support and you have my money.

Hope we find out more about the Watch release soon. Need a new one.

That isn’t even true figuratively, let alone literally.

With respect to features, the XS is better than the X in almost every way; that’s typically the case with the S year. As great as the X was, as I already said, the XS exceeds it in many ways. When you improve 6 or 8 features (or 20), you get to a critical mass where it’s upgrade worthy (to yearly upgraders including IUP).

how is XS better than X in almost every way for average consumer? The only difference you might actually notice is better photos. Rest is pretty much the same. There is no way average user will notice the difference in the A chip speed. I would even argue that not even prosumer will notice any difference.
Camera is the only noticeable difference and even that is quite minimal.
