Pro for a phone? 'Pro' has lost all meaning

Not really. I’ve seen a lot of photographers now use iPhone for videos and photography and the results are mind blowing. I’m sure it’s gonna be even better with the 11 pro’s camera.

I don’t care much about this though. I can live even with a camera with the quality of iPhone 8. Just gimme my god damn SE flagship!

I’ve been thinking that they should get rid of the numbers altogether. Just as they have with the tablets and laptops. The base iPhone (formally XR) would be the New iPhone. And the other two would be iPhone Pro but with different screen sizes. This would be just like the 13”/15” Pro laptop and 11”/12.9” iPad Pro.

They are moving towards more emphasis on services and peripheral accessories (wearables) and less on the “revolutionary” annual upgrades. It would make sense to drop the rising number every year (iPhone 23, anyone?).

Yes! I’ve been thinking this for months.

I’ve been thinking about this since 2017. I just don’t know though.

I’m thinking about commercials and billboards. Imagine seeing an ad for the new iPhone XR and it just says “new iPhone”. That seems kinda weird to me.

Laptops and desktops aren’t marketed the same way so it’s ok for them not to be MacBook Pro 11 or iMac 8.

Idk. I’m very curious to see what they’ll do. If they call the triple lens an iPhone Pro then they should add an adjective to the entry level model too.

Is this for all the other phones that have notches or just iPhones?
You have me worried.
He properly doesn’t count the punch as a notch...end of the day there is still a distraction wether it’s a notch or a punch hole...until phones become a plate of glass it’s really not much difference.

I guess it doesn't distract me, I think the whole thing is silly.

Maybe seeing how Huawei is doing well with their sales, I think Apple is copying Huawei Mate Pro :p

I currently have an iPhone 7 Plus and an iPhone 5s (my old phone, used only to receive calls and messages on a different number for work). In trying to justify spending any money on a new phone, in my case, I don't personally see the point. In my case, I would rather spend this money on a travel experience I will remember for the rest of my life. Again, it's only my opinion, but there might be many others out there also. The "only" reason that I would upgrade, would be if either: eSIM becomes supported for my telco (they have stated they have no plans) or a physical DualSIM version is released worldwide (I can't get to China). Being able to condense my work and personal number into one phone would be the only benefit at present, for me. I would assume there would be a lot of workers around the world with two numbers (and two phones) or international travellers also of this mindset, however, the lack of eSIM supported internationally and the lack of physical dualSIM (other than the Chinese market) makes us hold back upgrading.

Pro can stand for things other than "Professional".

Yes! And Apple's usage of "Pro" speaks to "Productivity."

Suggesting that products with that label have features that are useful for enhancing productivity; ie better displays, pencil/stylus support, performance, ports, etc.

What's funny is so many people here latching on to the idea that it means "professional." I think that has something to do with many romanticizing what a "professional" does.

Well that’s quite a ridiculous comparison. Who is saying smartphone camera have the same quality as $50k purpose built cameras?

However you’re willing to use a one trick pony feature as the epitome of technical excellence and ignore another. Sorry seems like a bunch of bias at play.:p

Tisk tisk, that is why I asked what are you making a comparison to when you commented “better video and smart HDR and better colour rendition”. :p

Even if you compare you comment with other smartphones it is subjective as it all depends on what appeals to the user. Will an iPhone user be bias to claim as you mention to substantiate their purchase and the cost of the device while accept a herd type mentality, dunno just saying.

Marketing try’s to convince potential customers that paying more and calling it luxury mean it is the best at everything it represents, this is simply not true otherwise there would be little advancement in the given area.

Let me provide an example, when Apple introduced stereo speakers on iPhone most people welcomed it and wondered as to why it took so long, none the less the speakers sounded great. The following year Apple claimed the speakers were % louder, the the year after it was % louder and more clarity. The physical dimensions for the speaker housing does not defy physics. Can materials change possibly, however having louder speakers does not equate to better and having it emitted from a tiny grill also cannot defy physics.

iPad Pro 2018 increases sound volume due to a possible larger and redesigned resonating chamber, does this mean we will see improvements on 2019, dunno. We don’t know if and to what extend Apple is holding back to make following releases worthwhile for users to upgrade.

They hardware releases are becoming like software release except hardware lives in the physical dimension and Apple is running up against the wall. At some point and it may have already happened many existing customer will simply say well so what if it has a better camera, HDR, etc. I am unable to appreciate it on any screen other than the one I’m my pocket and the cost simply does not justify the capability presently.

So HDR may be important to you, however for some if they don’t have a means to appreciate HDR that information is not being used. They will simply not care as paying for food, shelter and clothing far outweigh an incremental smart phone that now has deeper pixel channels. :p

Entry level: iPhone
Smaller high end: iPhone air(3 cams)
Largest high end: iPhone pro(3 cams and pencil support, USB-c???, 120hz display?? And splitscreen multitasking????)

Well. I am not paying premium and go Android unless:

- industry standard notch size or no notch
- weight under 170 grams for the top model
- real multitasking (split window)

I think Pro will be for both the XS size and XS Max size, and there won't be a naming difference between the two, as there's no feature difference either. You'll just select a size like you do with the iPads, Macbooks etc. But the Pro naming differentiates the phones from the XR, which might as well just be called iPhone (2019?)

That makes the most sense of anything I've read on here recently. And if that's what they come up with, I like it. Brings some consistency among all of the Apple devices.

So basically there is no way of getting around the only limited feature, night-sight, is about the only feature over Apple right now. However, xs and ms max take better photos in virtually every other scenario and I'm betting that gap is going to be closed in 2019.

Customers want is better cameras as evidenced by the way other companies are also trying to up the game with their cameras.

What customers don't seem to want is to move over to iPhone en-masse. They would rather, seemingly, stay within the Apple ecosystem.:p
