In 2018 I upgraded from a 6s+ to a XS Max. I found it to be a minor incremental upgrade. I will wait to when I can no longer get iOS updates for my XS Max to upgrade my XS Max to the whatever is the current iPhone at that time. I got fooled by the hype of the XS Max in 2018 and I will not be fooled again.

Still have the 7+, the only reason i have to update is that the calling qualtiy sucks more an more ;-/ So i hope the jump from 7 to 14 will be worth it
iphone 4 - Crazy Incredible Wow
ipone 5s - Wow
iphone 7+ - Nice Screen, but the wow was gone, hole in the wallet lasted longer ;-)

I hope the 14 get's at least a "nice" over the 7, but let's see how much money they want from me, otherwise a 12 or 13 will do for shure. The most used apps work ok on the 7 and i don't game (or say, i prefer to game on a Big Screen), so the camera and battery life will be the most valued thing, say nightmode, but will it give me a good shot at the moon in the night, maybe the ipone 33....

For me i don't see the point if you you update every 2 years since the x, but if it makes you happy and you got the bucks..... it's still a free world in some places on this planet. Keep on Rockin Neil......
Damn, nice monologue Swiss guy. Wish I could see more of these lately!

My wife and I will each be upgrading from a 6sPlus since Apple's next iOS will not support our phones. We avoid unnecessary upgrades for the last 7 years. However, we enjoy seeing everyone buying new phones and helping push our Apple stock up (we bought a large amount of shares in 1998-1999 at less than $13 per share) and have more than enough to retire several years ago.
Damn. I honestly want to be you. Well played!

iPhone XR owner here. Still happy with my phone even if it has 85% battery capacity left and it is a bit laggy in certain multitasking scenarios. I will definitely skip this year, let's see next!

Interesting point-of-view - the differences are increasingly minor year to year, but do add up over time. I really liked my 11 Pro Max in green, but my 12 Pro in blue and 13 Pro Max in gold have been a bit meh by comparison.

I know that I should've waited, but I'm already itching for a(nother) change in June ...

I think I'm going to grit my teeth and resist the urge for another year... my 11 Pro still works great, although I will be extremely tempted by ProMotion and those new cameras...
Maybe the iPhone 15 in 2023 will be the one for you?

I’m on a launch day iPhone X which is still going strong. Apart from the camera and better battery life I can’t figure out another aspect that would make it worth upgrading. Might hold out another year. Waiting for the incremental benefit's to add up to the point it will actually feel like a new phone.

Still enjoying my IPhone 11 Pro. Wish I would’ve gotten the 256GB rather than the 64GB though

I personally am not a fan of the pill shaped cut out. I think it's worse than the notch. The portrait mode video on the 13 almost made me upgrade but I feel the software driven portrait mode can look a little fake.

For me to upgrade from my 12 I think I would have to see an under screen fingerprint sensor or no notch/ pill cut out. Maybe USB C? Other than that, Apple is marginally improving the phone every year and doesn't give people a big reason to upgrade unless they have to.

Worthy upgrade for those with 11, XSMax, 8Plus.

Gotta control myself this year, too much $$ going to higher bills, gas, eh...the life essentials. etc etc. No fun purchases 😒. I usually did the upgrade after 2 years. (last year I did go from 12PM to 13PM, trade in was good I though, plus my 12 was a mess.)

Not this year, 13 Pro Max is perfectly ok right now. I can wait.

Waiting for USB-C on the 15 Pro, which will offer faster charging, faster data-transfer, and higher quality external audio devices. The 15 Pro is also predicted to have much better cameras than the 14 Pro.

The 15 Pro will drive the next mass upgrade cycle. The 14 Pro is "meh."

Seriously... Hope Tim Cook is reading these comments and decides to make last minute change by switching to USB-C on iPhone 14 series...

No USB-C no sale. Hope that gets imprinted in his head.
Apple carefully meters out new features in order to create continuous demand for upgrades. Enough people will buy the 14 Pro with Lightning and then upgrade to the 15 Pro with USB-C in order to offset any lost sales from those that delay upgrading for another year while waiting for USB-C.

The iPhone 15 will drive the next mass upgrade cycle. The iPhone 14 is more of a place-holder. The 15 will likely also be the first iPhone with Apple's own modem chip, and is rumored to support limited satellite communications.

3 years later and 5G is a feature?! it still has a 'hole' in the screen, no USB-C, sharp edges that catch every item they rub up against and you still have to buy the pro to get a usable full camera angle range. No real point in buying an iPhone14. Apple hang onto old concepts for too long and appear to resell too many new (low range) products with previous years unsold parts - definteily give this one a miss!
5G is such a non feature because I can’t even get it where I live 😂

This comment aged like milk. Did you check the article on front page just now? 😂
