Thanks for sharing the photos! :) The physical size of this phone is just so refreshing.

Now, lets just hope Apple doesn't gimp it on purpose. A purposefully poor camera unit, display, processor or even materials has the potential of totally ruining this phone for me. Please don't mess it up Apple, you hear me?!

It seems likely that the 5.4" model will have an aluminum band over a stainless steel one but, frankly, I think the stainless steel design on the dummy models looks cheap. I loved the SE1 design, so if the iPhone 12 is similar in design, I'll be very happy.

As far as features are concerned, I'm sure that it won't have all the features that the Pro model will have (advanced cameras and possibly 120Hz refresh rate). I can live without these features but the real questions for me are (a) display quality, (b) battery life, (c) advanced Face ID. On display quality and battery life, if the 5.4" model is as strong as the 11 Pro, I will be very happy. Lastly, I hope that the 5.4" model sees advancements in Face ID like the Pro models will likely see.

I don’t think it can have an 11 pro size battery unless it’s an 11 pro size phone though.
I’m hoping that the A14 brings even more power efficiency that a smaller battery than the 11 Pro paired with a smaller, 5.4” screen, brings battery life on par with the 11 Pro. I can’t think of one reason to buy the 6.1” Pro model but if battery life is weak, I will regret my purchase decision.

This is my fear. I've had a luxurious 2 years on a 4000 ma note 9. I never worry about the battery and don't intend to on my next phone!

I was very happy with the 11 Pro’s battery life. Battery life and screen quality are big what if’s for me in the 5.4” iPhone. I’m wondering what Apple will forego to price the device at $650.

The 11 pro achieves the 3046 mah capacity battery due to the L-Shaped
battery and the tiny stacked logic board design.

But the $699 iPhone 11 has a rectangular battery not a L-Shaped one and has a longer logic board design.

But I seriously hope that the iPhone 12(5.4) has at least 2900 mah so it’s battery life is good.

if it does not have a good battery life then iPhone 11 at $549 is a great deal.

Very interesting size comparison!

I thought there was a consensus among leakers that the 5.4’ model will come with the 2 camera setup (same as the 6.1’ iPhone 12)?

Only the Pro models are getting 3 camera modules (+ lidar) according to pretty much all the leaks. Not sure why we’re seeing 3 camera modules on this dummy model. Might lead many people to some false expectations and eventual disappointment.

As for the battery life it’s reasonable to expect it to be somewhere halfway between the 2020 SE and the iPhone 11, imo. So while I expect it to be “good” unlike the “meh” 2020 SE, it still obviously won’t be a full day battery under heavy loads such as gaming or say extensive use of camera and maps (as in my personal case). The compromises of a compact design.

I got fed up of waiting and trawling through YouTube videos to freeze frame and squint at the size comparisons, so I jumped on taobao and bought my own 5.4” dummy model. Attached are some images to help people compare them a bit more comprehensively.

Quick takeaway is it’s ~6mm wider than the iPhone SE and ~3mm thinner than the iPhone 7 that I’ve scaled it against. This lines up with the CAD drawings I previously drew based on the leaked resolution, which I calculated as 2.8mm thinner than the iPhone 7. The round profile on the 7 makes it appear thinner in images. it‘s also stacked on the bottom so doesn’t help with perspective. I used the portrait camera to try to reduce that factor.

From handling it I can say it does feel like a bit more of a stretch than the SE, which just nestles very comfortably in my hand. BUT, although it’s nearer to the 7, I will note that it feels a lot more manageable because the square profile and flat side lets you actually grip the device.

Overall, I think I can get used to it and finally retire my stalwart SE.

iZak, thanks a lot. This is really helpful. Would it be possible to measure the short length/display width so I can compare that to iPhone 8. I assume 16 by 9 video content will get smaller on the 5,4 inch compared to the 4,7 iPhone 8. thank you.

I hope it will have the same camera setup as my iPhone 11 (non Pro). It will probably only have two cameras but as long as it is wide and super wide and includes night mode I am happy. I gotta admit I love my iPhone 11, great price for such an iPhone. But I miss the small form factor. I ordered a SE2 but sent it back after iPhone 5.4 leaks. I can't wait to get it. 11 will probably be kept as a second device then. I don't need a 120Hz display, as nice as it is on iPads. I just want an Qualcomm modem 5.4 inch iPhone with decent battery life and decent display which is not too heavy. Doesn't need to be the best but decent to good.
The 11 Pro is a great size too but way too heavy and a little too big imo. As long as battery life is better than the SE2 and way better than SE1 I don't mind. Of course a Pro 5.4 would be nice too, but that's not gonna happen for a long time, also I predict the future will go back to smaller phones someday. Someday!

Still what Apple does is amazing. With this 5.4 iPhone, if they do it right, they will get many Android users who want a very good small phone. Android just doesn't do it.

Thx for the great picture comparison, very nice of you!!!

Great job iZac! Can you please perform a comparison of iPhone 12 Pro Max please?

Thanks Theyayarealivin! I'm afraid I don't have a Pro max to hand. I'll compare it to my girlfriends 11 pro in a little bit. The images won't be as clear though, I was using that phone to take the last round of pictures.

You're welcome Seaw, this dummy model was bought from one of the case manufacturers so it doesn't have a screen line to measure to. Overall the device is a little over 64mm wide though. Sorry I can't be more accurate than that!

Thanks for all the work, that’s awesome. The issue for me when moving from the 5s to 6s was one handed usability. Not holding it, actually using it.

I think anyone who liked the SE because they could use a 4.0” display one handed—using their thumb to hit targets both at the lower left and upper right of the display—is going to be shocked by just how unnavigable and unusable a 5.4” diagonal display is, one-handed.

But I’m already used to using my 6s with two hands, and I’m looking forward to a smaller physical-sized phone, since I carry my phone in my front pocket.

I can’t imagine getting an SE2 instead of the 5.4”, even with the $250-ish higher price. There are plenty of feature upgrades that make the price increase worth it, including OLED, display size, 5G, battery life, camera upgrades, FaceID, etc.

Thanks for doing that! A true public service.

How much was the dummy phone, if you don’t mind my asking?

He mentioned it in a post. I converted it to USD. About $17 USD.

Holy cow!!! iZac, you made the front page of MacRumors!!!

Article here

Sounds like many people in that thread are asking for a comparison of the 5.4” iPhone 12 to the 11 Pro & Pro Max models. iZac, no good deed goes unpunished.:p

I like it. I like how the edges are flat. Makes me wish I would have toughed it out with my 7 for another 6-7 months. But at the same time 11, 11 pro, 11 pro max were well over a thousand bucks. You can bet your sweet patootey that these will be similar in price 🤷‍♂️

The 11 wasn’t over $1000. I think it was $699 for the 64gb?

It will be an interesting dilemma assuming it is $250-300 higher. One factor I’ve heard mentioned is how frustrating FaceID is during an age of mask wearing, so some would not consider it an upgrade. The other things you mention do seem worth it, but because the SE2 is so cheap it does come close to doubling the overall price.
