This was happening to me last weekend. I am in a group chat with 5 people, one of which is not iPhone so the group chat is all SMS. None of those messages were coming through. Also could not receive 2 factor authentication code from Amazon. Tried to send a text to my wife and it was showing green send button even though she is on iPhone. It wouldn’t even send. I did a hard reset and all those missing messages came flowing in. I had upgraded to iOS 14.2 before this happened. But I am using an 11 ProMax, not a 12.

The problem for me started before I upgraded to iPhone 12. It is all related to latest iOS upgrades.

Only happens when my phone is locked. I don't get SMS notifications.

If phone is unlocked, I receive all my SMS notifications.

Glad to see this getting more exposure.

My iPhone 12 Pro Max is just sitting new in the box... I feel like I should wait for this to get fixed before I transfer my info over and start using it.

Wait for it to be fixed? Apple hasn’t even acknowledged it as being an issue. But then that’s probably normal. Jeeeeeez.

We have an iPhone XR that thankfully can still receive SMS messages and also an iPhone 12 Pro that does not receive any SMS messages from Android people. We can get iMessage texts from other iPhone people on both phones. Verizon was unable to resolve the issue.

I recently got my new Pro Max and used iCloud to restore all my messages etc. but messages has been behaving weirdly since.

I first became aware of a problem when my friend asked whether I’d received their iMessage and when I checked, I hadn’t. Figuring this was a one off, I ignored it but then I sent my friend a message back, which appeared in my iMessages chat with them for a short while but then suddenly disappeared. Also when they replied, I could see a preview of the message with the first sentence but then when I selected the message, there was nothing. It’s like it’s there but no there...sometimes by going in and out of messages it’ll show up for a short while before disappearing again.

Even more bizarrely it seems to be only happening when messaging two of my friends (perhaps as there were in a group chat with me in the past?). iMessages seem to be working fine with everyone else in my contacts and I can see their replies fine.

Was going mad trying to figure out a fix but I guess there isn’t one yet

Also it’s kind of unacceptable for those who rely on their phones for their business (luckily not in my case) as they may be missing out on work etc.

Agreed. This is by far the most impactful iOS Bug I’ve ever experienced.

I have an X and it’s doing the same thing for all text messages and iMessages. Didn’t start for me until 14.2. I receive messages but get absolutely no form of notification, I have to go into messages and open up every conversation to see if there’s anything new. I’ve reset network settings and even completely restored my phone, no luck. I’m on verizon too if that matters. It’s driving me insane!

this is very annoying, i mean without the verizon messages+ app i would be probably returning this phone but at this point i dont even know if it would continue to happen if i went back to my iphone 7 plus. I wish apple would acknowledge this soon.

What happens if you have another device linked to iMessages on your iPhone 12 or 12 Pro... Does it disappear on the iPhone but appear on the other device?
As in iPhone & iPad Pro. The iPad Pro is linked to the phone number not the iPhone device itself.

Very strange issue this... seem to be getting it since i switched to my iPhone 12 Pro.

Been getting notifications as normal on my Mac running Catalina & now even Big Sur fine, however iOS just not notifying me of incoming iMessages.

Hopefully Apple fix it soon!

It's a qualcomm issue will require a new chip in iPhone 13 or whatever it's called.

Ha. Hopefully Apple admits they have a problem to fix *soon*.

My exact thoughts. Tech support blew me off. That’s my biggest frustration. I but Apple products because the brand is well known for their support. This is not what I expect from Apple.

I amazed how the Apple techs have never heard of such problems. It happens a lot.

“Really, I haven’t heard of that”.

It really chaffs my ass that apple hasn't even made an official acknowledgement of this issue. A simple , "we have a problem and we are working on it " , would really calm the masses. Maybe the FCC needs involvement to get a foot up their @sses for such a prominent tech company

Since the release of the new iPhone 12 models, many new iPhone owners have been running into problems with the Messages app. There are complaints from users who aren't seeing SMS messages from friends, are missing text messages in group chats, and who aren't getting notifications when text messages are incoming.

It's not clear if this is a problem that's related specifically to the iPhone 12 models or if it's a wider issue with iOS 14.1 and iOS 14.2, but the majority of complaints appear to be from iPhone 12 owners.

Those who are experiencing missed SMS messages are simply not seeing some text messages that are sent from Android devices, as MacRumors reader FraXis describes:Most of the people who are missing SMS messages are not seeing them in group chats, but there are reports of some standalone messages not getting delivered. From MacRumors reader TheElmnt:There are also separate complaints of Messages being received, but no notification showing up. This is a problem that even pre-dates the iPhone 12 and iOS 14, as we've had earlier issues with it too. From MacRumors reader bmac4:
Some Verizon users have been able to solve their SMS messages by downloading the Verizon Message+ app, but it's not a complete fix for everyone and it doesn't work for all non-Verizon users. One reader also had success resetting network settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings), but that has not worked for others. Toggling off 5G also does not seem to be a solution.

This is likely a problem that carriers need to address with updated firmware or that Apple needs to fix in an upcoming software update. It appears to be a problem in both iOS 14.1 and iOS 14.2, and it's too soon yet to tell if iOS 14.3 is affected.

Are you having issues receiving some messages on iPhone 12 and 12 Pro models? Let us know in the comments.

This is beyond annoying. I use group texts previously with my X. Main way to communicate with family and several classes. I cannot send or receive group texts.. it disappeared on my message contacts as well

I am having the same exact problem about not receiving notifications for messages on my iPhone 12. I am actually in a chat with apple support about the issue and their response if slow. Only had me force restart my phone and check my iOS version. Didn't have this issue with my XR

I just noticed I was missing notification banners too. Had my iPad sitting next to me..notification banner would pop up on the locked iPad screen but not on my 12 pro nor paired Apple Watch. Even when I unlock the phone there wouldn’t be any banners but the badge would show unread texts. I’m not aware of missing any texts.
Did some testing and trouble shooting. Doesn’t seem to be happening with all chats...just certain ones. So far it’s only one group chat I know of that it‘s happening to but haven’t received messages in other chats...so who knows. Deleting that chat didn’t work, nor did turning off/on iMessage. What did seem to work was starting a new group chat...with the same exact people. Receiving messages in the new group chat now works fine with notification banners and the old chat still doesn’t.

For those having issues..try starting a new chat with the person/group. See if it works and post back.

EDIT: after getting some sleep I took another look and it turns out that group chat was silenced. “Hide alerts” somehow got turned on. My iPhone 12pro on att seems to working fine so far.

I’ve had three support sessions with Apple and three support sessions with Verizon. Verizon has reset a bunch of things on their end with the sim. I’ve reset and toggled all sorts of things as instructed by both Apple and Verizon.

The biggest frustration is that apple support reps have no internal knowledge of the issue, and keep misdiagnosing and misunderstanding it. When I stated that they shouldn’t release a flagship phone that can’t receive text messages the apple rep replied.... “I'm sorry but it would be hard to beta test on a device that isn't out. I guess the first batch of purchases would be beta testing.”

I hope this will eventually get worked out, but in the mean time I would recommend getting verizon to activate messages+ on your line and use that for texts instead.

How did you get your visual VM working. My wife and I are still having delayed notifications for vm. I ‘ve called ATT twice and they even reset my VM..Still having issues
It started working at the same time as the SMS messages. I think it's a carrier problem.
