Still can’t get over “Pro Max”.

Why isn’t it just:

12
12 +
12 Pro
12 Pro +

Some other products got there first.

The iPhone 12mini is going to be the “One More Thing” this year. Because it’s new and intriguing and unexpected (to the public at large).

I doubt you're being completely literal - but it has occurred to me that Tim Cook purposely distances himself from most of the eclectic and distinctive things Steve Jobs did, like the "one more thing" we came to look forward to. I don't think Cook will ever purposely use that phrase in that way. (If he's used it in the past, correct me - I haven't watched any keynote-type presentation all the way through/non-stop since 2007...)

I agree with you that a vocal subset of Apple fans has been clamoring for a smaller device, and Apple will probably make a big deal out of it in the presentation. Will be interesting to see how they play it, especially since rumors point to pretty "normal" upgrades to the bigger phones.

The more I think about it, the more I’m actually considering buying the 5.4 iPhone. I really miss having a small phone.

And that's why I'm glad that Apple is expanding the iPhone line!

People here keep complaining about "too many SKUs"

But I think it's fine.

You can get the small phone you want... and I'll get the giant Max phone that I want... and there will be models in-between to cover other sizes and prices.

We all win! :)

It does kind of make sense. It standardizes 6.1" as the "normal" screen size for both the 12 and 12 Pro, with models above and below having special Mini and Max names.

I really hope they offer a variation of the “mini” that isn’t missing major flagship features. Charge what you want — price is less important to me than having a full featured phone with a smaller form factor. I don’t understand why Apple is so obsessed with this “bigger = more premium” mantra in the phone market. It’s just so ridiculous.

Exactly! With phones getting bigger and bigger I’m glad Apple is actually being one of the only companies that’s going to offer a small footprint, all screen flagship device.

Yes, and the phenomenon of people being paralyzed by choices and walking out with no purchase at all is real.

Sure. And nobody should ever have to make a choice about things like health insurance, that's why Medicare For All is a great idea, you just choose your doctor, there's no such thing as "out of network" any more.

But when it comes to a phone? I like the big screens. Some people really love the small screens. For me the phone camera is just a handy way to take a quick snapshot of something I need to remember, I've got a DSLR for taking good pictures, for others a great phone camera is important. I want a LOT of storage on my phone, 128GB is kind of a minimum, I know people who won't ever fill 32GB.

Choice is important for some things. I see phones as one of those. I want to see more choice, not less. (Perfect phone for me would be a 6.5" LCD screen with 512GB storage, home button, headphone jack, hot-swappable battery, the 5 megapixel camera from an iPhone 4, no screen-side camera because I'm not going to FaceTime anybody ever, and about half an inch thick so it can have days of battery life.)

Four phones and some color choices is hardly any choice at all.

No kidding. It's worse with computers, other companies can offer 17" low end laptops and 13" high end ones. Apple's correlating screen size and high end is silly.

Generally trademarks are not enforced when they operate in completely different industries or products. From what I understood, there is no trademarked "Pro Plus" phone, though I do now see a OnePlus Pro, so maybe that would have been an issue.

I dislike the Max moniker but the reason they probably stopped the Plus name is because those Plus models were similar to their smaller siblings but they had additional specs like a bigger battery, better screen (in terms of resolution) and image/video optical stabilisation

I'm almost now wondering if it's because of OnePlus phones.

Because they want to use + for their paid services now.

Good point.

I can’t see the 5.4 being flagship though. I’d love it if the battery life was good but they’re likely to leave that to the Pro duo.

No it isn't. The mini came out a year before the Air.

The current iPad mini is basically a smaller version of the previous iPad Air. (The new iPad Air announced last week has no mini equivalent.)

The earlier iPads mini were more like smaller versions of the regular iPads, yes.

I'm just waiting for the whole backside of every phone to be covered in camera-related bits.

Why stop with three lenses when you can have 50?

The only reason is the battery. More power for VR etc. requires more battery so only the larger phones are going to get the more powerful features. Jobs did not want it that way and for a time forced the features to be the same. Now Ivy League marketers are in charge with no one to reign them in.

Yes... I understand the theory.

So explain why Samsung sells more smartphones than any other manufacturer... and they have WAY MORE models than Apple.

Like... a dizzying amount of choices...

:p

Through sheer volume.

They'd probably love to be in Apple's market segment instead: lower volume, yet higher revenues.

Leaker known as "L0vetodream" has today shared the alleged naming for the upcoming iPhone 12 lineup on Twitter. The tweet proposes that the upcoming iPhone 12 models will be titled "iPhone 12 mini," "iPhone 12," "iPhone 12 Pro," and "iPhone 12 Pro Max."

iPhone-12-Mini-Article.jpg

The names likely correspond to the three expected sizes of iPhone 12, with the 5.4-inch model being the iPhone 12 mini, the 6.7-inch model being the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the two 6.1-inch models being the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

The naming of the "Pro" models follows the precedent established in previous years, and the speculated titles would be a logical naming system for the iPhone 12 lineup. With there being four new iPhones in this year's lineup, the use of four different names would help to differentiate the models significantly.

The iPhone 12 mini would be the first iPhone with the "mini" moniker, which has otherwise been seen on the iPad mini, Mac mini, and iPod mini. At 5.4-inches, the iPhone 12 mini would earn its name being smaller than 2019's smallest iPhone, the iPhone 11 Pro, which stands at 5.8-inches.

Apples naming conventions are really a bit ridiculous. What's next? Pro Max Ultra? Pro Max Ultra Deluxe? Pro Max Ultra Deluxe Limited Edition?
